Response Paper #4:
Remember the recommendations for completing response papers:

1. Read each step of the assignment carefully and be sure to complete the bullet points for each step.

2. Complete each bullet point with detailed explanations. Don’t just list information quickly. Show your mind working by providing explanations which prove you studied and understood the details
of the lectures.

3. Don’t simply copy my sentences from the lectures. Don’t use my sentences with just a few word changes. Write your own sentences. You may use words, phrases, and concepts from the lectures. But the sentences should be your own. That means your sentences should clearly be distinct from mine in order to show your mind working. (If you quote from the lecture, use quotations marks and then explain what the quote means in your own words.)

4. Reread your writing before submitting your work. Look for mistakes and unclear sentences to fix. The more time you invest in your writing, the more your writing will express your intelligence.

Revolutionary Mothers

Carol Berkin’s work brings light to the contributions of women during the American Revolutionary War. These valiant women came from different classes, countries, races and social statuses. Most importantly, Berkin’s work gives us an inside look at the intricacies of these women’s lives and roles during a turbulent time of our country’s history.

First, discuss the social status of women in colonial America (what some male leaders felt their roles were etc.) and what roles women played in and outside their homes. Second, as hostilities escalated, how were women put in the crossfire during early days of the war, what roles did they play in their homes and how did this differ based upon their class and affiliation as a patriot or loyalist? Third, how did women’s treatment and roles differ based upon their race (Native American and Black)- What roles did women play towards the war effort on both sides (be specific)? In what ways did these women show valor and poise during the war? Last, at the conclusion of the war, in spite of the major roles that women played, did their participation open doors for equal treatment and social equality for them? What issues related to gender equality still persist in American society that have root in the colonial era?

Are modern day political bosses a force in today’s political world? Do you think that political bosses might benefit voters as they are more closely aligned to them and their needs than might be polished politicians who often follow the lead of interest groups who have their own agendas? Why did the establishment of a previous age fear political bosses and their machines. Ex: Activists might be very concerned about reducing pollution, while voters might consider safety a more pressing concern.

In responding to these questions, do some research on political bosses during previous decades and on modern day political bosses. Use both the text and outside resources as you collect pertinent information. Also, incorporate your own personal opinions into this mix.
