When viewing these three pictures about history, aimed at young children, how do they reflect your readings, documents, the mini-lecture, and class dicussion?

The French Revolution cartoons

Liberty Kids cartoons are published by the Public Broadcasting Network, and School House Rock shows are from the late 1970s and early 1980s. These latter shorts aired in “dead” commercial time on ABC. The French Revolution cartoons are also American made.

When viewing these three pictures about history, aimed at young children, how do they reflect your readings, documents, the mini-lecture, and class dicussion? What is missing (hint: is Europe mentioned in the American Revolution or is the American Revolution mentioned with the French)? What is added? What is the perceptive? Most importantly, think about the nature of these cartoons. Do you think they provide an accurate portrayal of history? Are they fair? Within this analysis, make sure you are paying attention to the larger aspects of political authority.

Have other countries experienced such racial tension, and if so, what have they done? Are racial issues something that the government needs to fix or is that up to each individual? What is racial tension and where does it come from..if even able to answer?

Solution to racism

In regards to racial issues in the United States, what needs to be done, if anything? In regards to racial issues in the United States, what needs to be done, if anything? Look back at previous racially tense moments in the US (civil war, 1960s, etc): what was learned or not learned from those periods? Have other countries experienced such racial tension, and if so, what have they done? Are racial issues something that the government needs to fix or is that up to each individual? What is racial tension and where does it come from..if even able to answer? What about hypocricies within race-examples: a single race allowing the use of certain terms/phrases, but not allowing any other race or TV shows that only depict one race. Explain. This question(s) must be answered: how do you help to eliminate racism in the United States? Each person can either contribute to or help eradicate the culture of racism that has existed, so what steps can individuals take?

Who are the parties to the conflict? What are the parties’ interests? What are the parties’ grievances? What are the trigger events? What are the root causes of the conflict?

Violence in Voinjama, Liberia

In February 2010, in a small town of Konia, Lofa County, a 20-year girl named Korpo Kamara went missing and was later found dead. There were many different stories that people began telling about how and why the girl died. These stories turned into rumors that spread across Lofa County like wild fire. That winter, the only radio station that normally operates in Lofa County was off the air due to technical problems. Because the radio station was down, there was no effective way to prevent or dispel the rumors. These continued to spread rapidly through the County due to widespread ownership of mobile phones. The rumors circulating about the young girl’s death heightened communal tensions in Lofa Country. On February 26, 2010 violent clashes erupted in Voinjama, the capital of Lofa County. Four people died during the clashes, many were wounded, and there was significant property damage. Using the information provided in this packet, work with your group to develop a conflict map that represents your understanding of the conflict. Draw the map on the flip chart. When developing the map you should consider the following questions:

Who are the parties to the conflict?
What are the parties’ interests?
What are the parties’ grievances?
What are the trigger events?
What are the root causes of the conflict?

Has the United States discriminated against its people from Reconstruction to the Empire era?

Constitution of the United States

According to the Constitution of the United States, one of reasons that Americans founded the United States was to provide freedom to its people. Thus far, our class has covered, or will cover, U.S. history from Reconstruction (Chapter 15) to the Empire Era (Chapter 19). Use the readings from Modules 1-5 (or any primary source from the American YAWP Reader found in Chapters 15-19, located here ( http://www.americanyawp.com/reader.html ))

Prompt: You are writing this paper to a family member/friend who has a basic knowledge of U.S. history and is not an expert about the subject. They are interested in learning more about the following question: Has the United States discriminated against its people from Reconstruction (Chapter 15) to the Empire era (Chapter 19)? You, as an expert of U.S. history, will write a formal report using four pieces of evidence from our readings to show them how the United States has discriminated against its people during this era.

Your essays will need to include a thesis statement that addresses the question and incorporate a minimum of four pieces of evidence to support your answer. You must use sources from multiple weeks of the course to answer the prompt. For example, you cannot just use Chapter 15 from Week 1 for this essay or only Turner’s Frontier Thesis. Instead, you need to use different sources from different Modules. Your textbook must account for at least two of your pieces of evidence.
