[what do these historians say about what medieval war was exactly? its composition, its way of fighting, what made it distinct?] What aspect of war – causes [religion–see Riley-Smith, for example], motivation [how do the historians on the list argue for different motives], technology [ [atrocities, for example in the crusades; rules of war]], conduct, on-the-ground experience – do different historians focus on? [how do they compare and contrast with each other]]And how do the particular wars they study – Crusades, 100 Years’ War – shape their analysis? Discovery 3

Discovery 3 introduces you to WPA resources collected in the 1930s and presented here as Born in Slavery. This is one of the most important collections in our nation’s history of enslavement. The interviews and other materials accessed here feature prominently in scholarship, including two of our books this semester. You get to look at the sources themselves and see the stories told by people who knew enslavement when they were children or young adults.

Go to Born in Slavery and explore the three main areas (About this Collection, Collection Items, and Articles and Essays) curated at this site.

Pick one interview from any of the volumes accessed on the About this Collection page. How To Write A Political Speech

You are running for public office in 1860. Your assignment is to research the candidates who represented the Republican and Democratic Parties that year. Find out first of all, what issues these two candidates were dealing with in their campaign. Second, you are to pick a side on which you wish to take a stand. As such, you will write a two-page speech in which you deal with the issues of the day. Keep in mind that your objective is to win the election and as you present your speech, do so in such a way as to let your audience (me) know that you both understand what the major issues are and that you have a clear plan to deal with each of them. You are allowed to discuss the point of view of your opponent but be sure to do so in such a way as to convey respect and dignity. Remember the academic honesty policy. Also, you must produce a bibliography that includes three sources (one of them being a primary source).

In regard to the content you will be graded on the following:

Did you effectively tackle the issues of the day?
Were you thoughtful and engaging in presenting the issues of the day?
Did you look at the issues from both sides and present a clear answer to those issues?
Did you cite three sources in Chicago Style using at least one primary source?
Remember that all sources must be scholarly and authoritative.
Did you integrate primary source citation into your bibliography?
Did you properly format your speech?
