Examine the implications of the article on organizations and how they operate

Critical Evaluation and Research Writing – Journal Article Summary

This assignment is designed to give you an in-depth experience with current examples of research in human resources.  Select one of the three articles listed below to read. You will sign up for a group with your classmates who are reading the same journal article. These are research articles on different topics within HR.  Write a summary paper that should:

  • Summarize the article (its purpose, background, research question, methodology, and results)
  • Identify what the study tells us that we did not know before
  • Examine the implications of the article on organizations and how they operate
  • Explore what future research should address
  • Discuss the positive and negative aspects of the article (i.e., Was the purpose clear? Did the methodology make sense to you? Could the research question be approached in a better/different manner? Were inconsistencies between predictions and findings clarified effectively? Did the authors adequately identify limitations of the research?)
  • Your paper should conclude with a personal note of reflection discussing your reaction to this exercise and what you learned or observed about human resources research

The three research articles you are to select from are:

The paper should be no more than five double-spaced pages using 12-point Times New Roman font, and 1” margins on all sides (excluding title page). In addition, you are expected to use APA writing format, referring to the APA manual required for this class.

In the group discussion board, discuss the thoughts and opinions in your paper based on the questions from above. You will also review the article summary of two classmates in your group and enter into dialogue adding insightful or new ideas, comments, or questions.

To provide a structure for balanced participation, and to allow you to maximize the benefit of the discussion boards, it is recommended that you follow the following guidelines:

  1. Post your initial response to discussion questions in the first three days of the week (Monday through Wednesday).
  2. Post two or more thoughtful and topic-relevant comments to responses made by classmates for each discussion question during the last four days of the week (Thursday through Sunday).
  3. Respond to any questions that your instructor or peers have regarding your posts by the end of the week (Sunday).

The professor has the discretion to not accept discussion board posts at any time beyond the due date, because the opportunity to participate in the discussion board assignment has passed.

What is the importance of a company contributing to an employee’s overall wellness?

Final Project: Research Question

The HR related topic I chose: Stress and Wellness

What is the importance of a company contributing to an employee’s overall wellness?

This is the feedback from the professor:

“How are you defining wellness? What metrics would you use to measure it?
What constitutes a company “contributing” to wellness? Is the proposal to change how that works?

What is the comparison? You have to be able to determine whether or not the intervention (contribution to wellness) is effective by comparing the same outcomes where it was not present or was different somehow. For example, before vs after the “wellness contribution” or a control/experimental groups (or both).

What things would you measure to answer the question if it works or not?

Describe your plan to conduct job analysis for each job title, and provide a job description for each job title.

LeoTech is a growing software company that has taken off in the past few years. They started only 5 years ago in a garage in Central Florida and are now up to 65 full-time employees, revenues of $500 million, and an anticipated IPO in the next year. They’re growing by leaps and bounds!

The problem: they’re growing out of control. The owner, president and CEO, Fritz DeLeon has hired family, friends, and friends of friends whom he trusted, and never really had time to spend on formal job analysis or job descriptions. Now that the company is getting bigger, people are getting confused about who has which responsibilities. He is also starting to hire more people he doesn’t know very well, and it can be tough to ensure they understand exactly what is expected of them when they are hired (other than a few sentences he jots down on an employment agreement). Fritz has contracted with you to do some job analysis and create some job descriptions for LeoTech. Your task is to choose TWO from his priority list of job titles, describe your plan to conduct job analysis for each job title, and provide a job description for each job title. You will find it useful to discuss what type of job analysis you would conduct, what resources (including SMEs) you would include, and what methods you would use to collect information. It may also be useful to compare/contrast your plans for job analysis since you must choose TWO different job titles.

Job Titles @ LeoTech for Job Analysis Project

(numbers in parentheses indicate how many are currently employed at LeoTech):

Customer Support Specialist (10)
Customer Support Manager (1)
Program Developer (25)
Sales Account Manager (1)
Senior Program Developer (4)
Software Quality Analyst (6)
Sales Account Specialist (8)

Expect to take approximately 4-6 pages (double-spaced, 12-point font) to complete this assignment, including your description of the job analysis plans and the job descriptions. Please note that your job descriptions do not need to be double spaced and should follow an outline or bullet format

Research human resource management policies at various educational institutions.

In this activity, you will be comparing and contrasting human resource management policies at various institutions.
Follow these steps to complete the assignment:
1. Research human resource management policies at various educational institutions.
2. Identify three educational institutions that you will analyze in greater depth. You should have access to hiring policies, benefits, packages, job listings and descriptions, employment expectations to include collective bargaining and unionization, and the institutions’ perspective on diversity.
3. Prepare a list of interview questions that you would like to ask a human resource manager at each institution. The questions should center around how HRM is used at their institution and should give you more insight about how HRM is applied in higher education.
4. Write a 2-page report, identifying why you chose the educational institution(s), summarize the questions you prepared and explain what you hope to learn from these questions.

Discuss the importance of each initiative, and then discuss the potential impact to the implementation of the strategic plan if they were not completed.
