Write your research paper on the play Streetcar Named Desire.

Streetcar Named Desire

Writing your research paper on the play Streetcar Named Desire

A. This paper is mandatory and carries a larger grade . Failure to turn it in will bring your grade down to a D or F depending if you have all As.

Your paper must have 3 literary scholarly sources and all must have authors names and the page numbers where they are published. You will take at 3 direct quotations of 4 to 7 lines from each source, meaning you will have a total of 9 direct quotations or more. You will therefore have blend-ins, 4 – 5lines quotations, and block quotations. Do not let your paper be more than 35% of direct quotations as it will be a copied and pasted paper. You must have your own thoughts in discussions and analysis.
All quotations should be introduced and not just copied in the essay. Do not use your critic to quote from the play , but use the critic to give a critical comment on the dialog or event or excerpt you take from the play

Follow with the parenthetical citations (Collins 45). This means Collins is the last name and 45 is the page that it appeared in the Yale Review Journal. The MLA style does not use the year of publication in the parenthesis or the sentence. It also does not use the letters pp nor does it use the comma between the last name and page number.
Your paper must have the Works Cited soon after the essay. Only the 3 critics that you actually mention in your paper will appear in Works Cited and none others. List them by name alphabetically with the journal name, page numbers, and year of publications.

Any paper that has no research in the paper and a Works Cited page will be an F.
Read the play carefully and view or listen to all supplementaries I give you in etext path
You will have to do some research in our literary scholastic journals and see what critics have to say about the play and then decide what approach you want to take.
You will do your research using our library database and use only scholarly journals that publish literary criticism on these works. . Please do not ignore our library and be careful that your sources are sound. You will get a better grade for professional journals taken from our MVCC website.

B. The format will be MLA style. See Course Documents button to access MLA papers for guidelines.

Summarize the text in your own words, which means presenting the writer’s most compelling, important, or controversial points in relation to the overall claim/thesis/purpose of the article.

Embracing the One

Summarize the article “Embracing the One” in the Daodejing by, James Behuniak, Jr.

Write a 300 word summary of the article using They Say templates.
>Using summary to condense others’ ideas is an essential thinking and writing skill. Since we’re always entering a conversation when we write, it’s essential that we learn to place ourselves—and our writing—within a particular conversation by summarizing what others have said in relation to what we have to say.

Here’s what writing scholars Graff and Birkenstein have to say about writing summaries:
To write a really good summary, you must be able to suspend your own beliefs for a time and put yourself in the shoes of someone else. This means playing what the writing theorist Peter Elbow calls the ‘believing game,’ in which you try to inhabit the world-view of those whose conversation you are joining—and whom you are perhaps even disagreeing with—and try to see their argument from their perspective. (31)

Begin your summary with some variation of the following

In (name the text—use quotation marks or italics as appropriate), (full name of the author) (insert descriptive verb like suggests, claims, comments, concludes, illustrates, insists, observes, points out, argues, believes, thinks, writes, says, etc.)

Summarize the text in your own words, which means presenting the writer’s most compelling, important, or controversial points in relation to the overall claim/thesis/purpose of the article.

Take care to avoid a list summary that sounds like this: In “blah blah blah,” Dr. Jon X says many things about his subject. First he says. . . Then he says. . . Next he makes the point that. . .

Summaries should not simply outline the text (like in the above example). Again, they should present the writer’s most compelling, important, or controversial points in relation to the overall
claim/thesis/purpose of the article. Summaries may contain bits of direct quote and/or paraphrase, but those “bits” should be surrounded by quotation marks (as in the case of direct quote) and explicitly introduced according to the guidelines outlined on “The Art of Quoting” document available in the Content section of our course.

Prepare your summary for a naïve audience who has not read the text you’re summarizing.
Write in 3rd person point of view. No “I” or “you.”

Write in standard, edited America English—complete sentences with standard spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Answer ONLY ONE question from the four listed below for your midterm essay exam.
1. Discuss the theme of pride as the fatal flaw in the following three characters: Gilgamesh in The Epic of Gilgamesh, Odysseus in The Odyssey, and Creon in Antigone, bringinga bout their hubris and what they learn from it. Carefully consider their dialogue and actions as evidence to support yourself with passages from the reading.

2. What is the role of women that demonstrates what is respected and expected of them vs. what is devalued culturally in the female characters in at least three of the readings? Refer to specific characters like Ishtar, Ninsun, Siduri, and/or Shamhat in The Epic of Gilgamesh; Penelope, Athena, Circe, and/or Calypso in The Odyssey, Antigone and Ismene in Antigone; and/or even the female characters who must uphold a social protocol and duties of the courtly life in The Pillow Book.

3. How is the theme of duty conveyed through the characters in at least three of the readings when you consider the depiction of gods/God depicted in the ancient literature as divine vs. flawed and the type of devotion or defiance expressed to them by the characters?

(Note: Consider how Krishna’s portrayal in the Bhagavad-Gita is quite the opposite of the gods like Athena, Poseidon, Calypso, Circe, !no, Hermes, Zeus, and Heracles in The Odysseyor even the gods/goddesses, such as Anu, Aruru, Ea, Siduri, Tammuz, Enlil, Ereshkigal, Ishtar, Ninsun, and Shamash in The Epic of Gilgamesh in how they interact with humans. Moreover, in The Bhagavad-Gita, Arjuna learns about duty. The path to God comes with the right action, loving devotion to God, and the way of knowledge. While Antigone may rebel against Creon’s tyrannical laws as civil disobedience, she upholds her duty to the gods to bury her brother as her devotion is to family and the gods. )

4. Consider the theme of a quest/journey in three of the four readings and compare three of the characters for this theme:
o What must Gilgamesh overcome on his quest for immortality, and does he achieve it during his journey in The Epic of Gilgamesh;

o What is Arjuna’s spiritual journey and what must be overcome to achieve his quest for enlightenment and the vision of Krishna’s totality in The Bhagavad-Gita;

o What are the obstacles that Odysseus must face on his quest/journey to return home, and does he achieve his goal; and/or…

o What are the challenges of courtly life, such as obligations, rituals, rules of taste, protocols, and practices, that Sei Shonagon must confront in her quest/journey for love and beauty (aesthetics)?
