Directions: While reading the novel A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, you will consider the following essay prompts.  You will annotate while you read and keep track of any character inferences or symbolism seen throughout the book on the google document provided. Because we only have two weeks to work on this paper, a five paragraph essay is ok for this one.

Essay Prompt: 

  • You will use the information from both the novel and outside sources to help you write your essay on the following topic:  
  1. Choose any three symbols and show what each of these symbols represents for each character and that character’s dream.  Consider the following symbols:  Mama’s plant, Beneatha’s African connections (her robe, name, haircut), Walter’s liquor store plans, and the Younger Family’s home in Clybourne Park.

Essay Requirements: 

  • This essay must be approximately  2 ½ pages long (double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman font)
  • Paper must address the listed prompt and cover how this topic developed within the novel.
  • You must include at least 3 quotes from the book within your paper.
  • You will be graded on not only your topic, but also on your writing mechanics and style (spelling, grammar, punctuation, structure, etc.).
