Explain how Oedipus the King could be read as Sophocles’ response to the Sophists.

Write a 3-5 paragraph response to EACH of the prompts below. Include specific references to relevant texts from our syllabus and make sure you support whatever you claim.

1).  Though it’s a little reductive and doesn’t work in every way, use the video to discuss how Gilgamesh satisfies most of Campbell’s characteristics for a classic hero in Western culture.

Refer to the video as you want, but don’t worry about direct quotes or citations or a Works Cited page. Just refer to it freely.

2). Explain how The Odyssey is an expression of ancient Greek values.

3). Explain how Oedipus the King could be read as Sophocles’ response to the Sophists.

4). Choose Medea and/or Odysseus and think of how each of them could be criticized for “bad behavior” by modern readers.

In what ways could an understanding of some of the ancient world’s obsessions help lessen some of the criticisms a modern reader might have toward one or both of these characters?

Use four murals to create a narrative of the Mexican Revolution.

I. My Story of the Mexican Revolution
Use four murals (by any muralist) to create a narrative of the Mexican Revolution. Your narrative can be about one of the following topics: love, class struggle, breaking free from an oppressed system, finding a loved one, losing a good friend, losing a battle.

Make sure that your narrative sticks to the theme of the Revolution, but with your own point of view. Give the characters a name and add dates spanning the Revolution (1910-1920).
Employ different time tenses and rely on the content of the murals (background, color, actions, movements, etc.) to further elaborate your story.

As a refresher, reread Abbott’s article on Narrative and Life, where he tells us that “…narrative is the principal way in which our species organizes its understanding of time (3). And so here you want to organize your own story of the Mexican Revolution with the help of four murals.

Your narrative should be at least two pages long; make it double spaced and add the murals with their respective names.
