Based on your learning related to this course, how would you diagnose what is really going on in the organization selected? How well do the organizational leaders/members understand what the issues really are? How ready is the organization to change in terms of awareness, motivation, flexibility, and skill? Given the context of the change (social, political, economic, customer need, etc.), how big a change is required to move the organization to a productive and effective mode of existence?

Change Initiative Assessment: Paper Assignment Instructions

The project is an organizational change report that will total no more than 15 pages (not counting title or reference pages; no abstract is required). The paper must follow current APA format guidelines and will contain 2 main parts. Part 1 must be 1250–1750 words, and Part 2 must be 1500–2000 words. A minimum of 10 peer-reviewed sources must be used within the paper.

Part 1 (a maximum of 1750 words) must be written as a case and must describe vs. analyze/recommend. Part 1 must be modeled after the cases read during the course, containing similar format and content.  Part 1 must contain a case description of a large organizational change (one about which you are able to obtain significant information). Types of change might include mergers, acquisitions, downsizing, new strategic direction, globalization, public image failures (BP, Toyota, Facebook, Goldman Sachs), macro-economic change, political/legal shifts, or some other type of organizational change.

The target organization may be a private, government, or non-profit organization with which you are familiar. Remember that you will need to select an organization for which you are able to collect considerable information in order to create a comprehensive case.

Part 2 (a maximum of 2000 words) must be a thorough analysis, with suggestions for change and recommendations for management interventions in the case from Part 1. This part of your  Project must be modeled after your 2 Consulting Proposal assignments, each of which includes an analysis section and a recommendations section. In the analysis, apply course concepts to the case. In your recommendations, provide strategic, practical, and insightful actions for management.

Consider the following questions in Part 2:

  • Based on your learning related to this course, how would you diagnose what is really going on in the organization selected?
  • How well do the organizational leaders/members understand what the issues really are?
  • How ready is the organization to change in terms of awareness, motivation, flexibility, and skill?
  • Given the context of the change (social, political, economic, customer need, etc.), how big a change is required to move the organization to a productive and effective mode of existence?
  • Analyze the company’s particular approach to change. Why did the organization take one particular approach to change (e.g., downsize) rather than other possible ones (e.g., creating a learning organization)? How effectively was the particular change attempt carried out?
  • How did resistance to change manifest itself? How effectively was the resistance addressed?
  • What were the objectives of the change effort? How successful was the change effort given its objectives?
  • How might the organization have used some of the materials and learnings from this course to increase the success of the change effort?
  • What consulting strategy would you use in working with the organization?
  • What recommendations would you make to the organization on how to be more effective in implementing and/or sustaining changes going forward?

Human Resources Management (HRM) has evolved. HRM has moved from a transactional function to transformational. In other words, HRM has become a leader within the business through the use of technology. How did technology help HRM make this transformation? Look back just a few years ago to how you used to interact with the HRM Department. If you needed information related to pay, benefits, or policies, you would pick up the phone and speak with your HRM representative. Through technology and online access, HRM is now more accessible to employees, allowing them more control over managing their pay, benefits, and employee information. For example, employees are accessing their benefits information online and making their own changes. They can also access 401K accounts to manage their savings.

Technology has also changed how HRM manages its own business. Collecting and managing employee data was a lengthy, manual process. Through technology, HRM can easily determine how many employees were hired over the past year, how many people separated from the business, overtime rates, trends related to absences, and so forth. This ability to collect and analyze employee data has allowed HRM to become a valuable strategic business partner.

This course reviews that strategic HRM role and how Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) have brought HRM into the 21st century. Throughout this course, we will look at HRM technology, how it is used, data collection, data analysis, and identifying employee trends. From those trends, we will determine a strategic direction for the business.

Write an 8-10 page research paper in APA format, 7th edition (excluding the title page and reference pages) on your chosen topic. You are to create an analytical study to evaluate your recommendation, showing and demonstrating a measurable performance impact it would create for the organization.

Creating flexible work schedules and environments

Write an 8-10 page research paper in APA format, 7th edition (excluding the title page and reference pages) on your chosen topic. You are to create an analytical study to evaluate your recommendation, showing and demonstrating a measurable performance impact it would create for the organization. For example, if your intention and recommendation is to reduce turnover and improve performance, then you need to provide both hard and soft data to support your assertions and recommendation, and, in turn, anyone reviewing your report would draw the same conclusions. Whatever topic you choose, make sure that you connect it to “human resources” – whether it is the function, the department, or actual employees.

You will use a minimum of eight (8) sources, making sure that at least 80% (6) of your sources are peer-reviewed. You are, of course welcomed to use more.

Is the process centered? Provide the results of your calculations and the rationale for your decision by thinking about the process capability. Is the process capable at 3-sigma? Provide the results of your calculations and the rationale for your decision by thinking about the process capability index. Is the process in statistical control? Provide the appropriate numbers and the rationale for your decision using a control chart for individuals.

Assessment 1 Instructions: Process Improvement Plan

Develop a 7-page process improvement plan for a provided scenario.

Introduction

This portfolio work project, a process improvement plan, will help you demonstrate competencies in process documentation, process analysis, and process improvement.

Scenario

Wild Dog Coffee Company, a locally owned company with a single coffee shop location, serves a wide selection of espresso products, small breakfast and lunch menu items, and a limited evening menu. The company is planning to expand the business by adding an additional location. While different menu items may be tested at the new location, the espresso beverage preparation process will remain exactly the same. The company wants to ensure that the espresso beverage preparation process is documented and refined before the move.

Your Role

You are one of three owners of Wild Dog Coffee Company. Your background is primarily in operations. Your business partners’ backgrounds are in marketing and sales. While they are working on the external aspects of the business that will bring customers in, you are focused on making the internal customer-facing processes as efficient as possible. You are preparing an analysis and recommendations that will help manage a core process improvement for the successful opening of a second location.

Requirements

Include the following in your process improvement plan:

  • Assess the steps for a selected process.
    • Develop a flowchart showing the process’ steps. You may include as many steps as are relevant for your selected scenario.
    • If using Wild Dog Coffee Company, show the steps for preparing an espresso beverage (for example, latté, cappuccino); there are two steps that must be included: (1) order is submitted and (2) beverage is handed to the customer. Hint:You may want to visit a local coffee shop to observe the beverage preparation process.
  • Prepare a procedure documenting the selected process. At a minimum, the procedure must document the following for your selected process:
    • Identify at least two metrics that will be useful in determining how well the new process is performing. Be sure to identify the target value of the metric and how you will measure it.
      • For Wild Dog Coffee Company, it could be how well the beverage preparation process is performing. A third metric is already identified for you: order delivery time. (This is the time between when the order is submitted and the time the beverage is handed to the customer.)
    • This section describes each step of the process.
      • For Wild Dog Coffee Company, your procedure should be titled, “Espresso Beverage Preparation Process.” Be sure to include order submittal and handing the beverage to the customer as part of the procedure.
    • Purpose (of the procedure). This section describes what the procedure is intended to do.
  • Analyze data for process changes for a selected process. Respond to the following questions:
    • Is the process centered? Provide the results of your calculations and the rationale for your decision by thinking about the process capability.
    • Is the process capable at 3-sigma? Provide the results of your calculations and the rationale for your decision by thinking about the process capability index.
    • Is the process in statistical control? Provide the appropriate numbers and the rationale for your decision using a control chart for individuals.
    • For Wild Dog Coffee Company, analyze the Beverage Service Times [XLSX] This data is for 50 beverage preparation events and was collected using their order processing system. Each individual order gets a time-stamp when it is placed and again when the beverage is handed to the customer. The senior barista thinks the beverage delivery times should range between 2 and 3 minutes. The known process standard deviation, which has been calculated on an on-going basis, is 0.5903 minutes.
  • Analyze the cause and effect of process variances.
    • Brainstorm possible sources of variation to create a cause-and-effect diagram to help analyze potential sources of variation in the espresso beverage preparation process at Wild Dog Coffee Company or for your selected business’ process. Your diagram must include at least four of the “6 Ms” (that is, management, manpower, method, measurement, machine, materials).
  • Recommend quality and customer service improvements for a selected process.
    • Detail the results of your analysis for Wild Dog Coffee Company or your selected business’ process to substantiate your recommendations.
