Concepts from the book: Buchanan D and Huczynski A (2019) Organizational Behaviour. 10th ed. Harlow, Pearson
The aim is to apply the concepts presented to identify, analyse and propose recommendations for action, for a management problem in a health care organisation.
Objectives The objectives are, to:
• Identify an organisational problem.
• Analyse the problem situation using concepts and theories of organisational behaviour; and
• Develop credible and feasible recommendations for change.
Task instructions
WRITE UP A CASE STUDY OF AN ORGANISATIONAL PROBLEM IN HEALTH SERVICES or remotely
health–related organisation based on your experience.
Your case study should address the following four areas:
1 The problem situation: A concrete description of the problem in the particular organisational setting.
2 The diagnosis: What the organisational management literature contributes to an understanding of the core problem, drawing on the relevant concepts and theories presented in the module.
3 The wider organisational context: An analysis, which describes how other features of the organisation and its environment relate to the problem situation.
4 Recommendations for management intervention: A clear statement of feasible
recommendations, including an analysis of why these policies may work and others not
The essay should refer to a real–life problem from your experience, which is amenable to analysis by organisational management concepts and theories. It is a good idea to anonymise the organisation(s) you refer.
Section 1: State the problem situation clearly. For example, describe signs and symptoms indicating an organisational problem that should be addressed by management. Remember, problems can arise at individual, group, inter–group and organisational levels. If you have not worked in health services, you can choose any other health related organisation. However, make sure to choose an organisational problem that can be addressed appropriately by the concepts taught in this module.
Section 2: Analyse the problem situation in terms of organisational behaviour. From the range of concepts and theories covered in the module, select those you think are most relevant and discuss what each may contribute to an understanding of the core problem. Make sure to focus on a small number of key concepts and apply them to the concrete situation you are discussing.
Section 3: Examine the wider organisational context and identify issues (internal or external to the organisation, depending on your topic) you think are important to understand the problem. Your analysis should draw on the relevant concepts and theories from the module and discuss three or four management issues that are relevant to the wider organisational context. You may also refer to the wider environment at local, regional, national or international level, if these are directly relevant. You have discretion to decide what you discuss here or in Section 2, as this depends on your analysis and the nature of the problem. However, in both sections try to focus on a small number of key aspects and provide an in–depth analysis rather than a superficial discussion of many different topics.
Section 4: Finally, you should formulate a coherent set of recommendations, which are both practical and relevant. Make sure your proposal for management intervention is based on your previous analysis, is realistic and feasible, and addresses the core problem. Also, justify your recommendations and explain why these may work and others not.
An author and date referencing; the Harvard system should be used. The word limit is 2,500 words.
The final word count should include the main text, citations, captions, titles, subtitles and footnotes and should be within the limits noted above. • Tables, figures, bibliographies/reference lists and appendices should not be included in the count, but should be used appropriately and not as a way to keep within the word limit • may include up to a maximum of 10 figures, graphs and tables combined
Assignment:
You have been employed as a Security Consultant Team Leader for a large, UK based NGO that conducts projects worldwide, often in remote and hostile environments.
Further details, a description of the organisation, its activities and its current Security Risk Management framework can be seen at Annex A and B.
Also see Annex D for Task 2.
The assignment can be broken down into 2 distinct tasks as follows;
(Task 1)
Identify situations when the organisation (Annex A & B) may find it helpful to use the services of a consultant, explaining the benefits this approach offers to the organisation, and how a consultant can add value.
Relate the importance of the consultant understanding the client’s needs and overcoming potential barriers when initiating change.
This section must:
Explain the key phases in the consultancy cycle and the information you would expect to gain at each stage.
Discuss the strategies used to overcome the potential risks and challenges you expect to face during the consultancy intervention.
See suggested evidence on page 3
Word Count: 1000-2000 words
(Task 2)
You have now been tasked to lead your team in a Security Consultancy Project Intervention. The full brief concerning the intervention has been passed to you from the client account manager and can be seen at Annex D. In short, the client has requested a change management program to align a security conscious culture throughout the organisation.
The strategy for implementing the culture change will be decided on further client meetings. At this stage you are tasked with creating a brief for your team that analyses the consultancy life cycle that best suits the project outlined in Annex D and evidences the deliverables to be expected at each stage.
This section must include:
A detailed analysis of differing consultancy cycle methods and a reasoning for your chosen method in a security consultancy intervention context.
Discuss your project plan: how will it be controlled and delivered
What systems do you intend to put in place to analyse information and data and what practices will you implement to manage potential risks to project fulfilment.
Evaluate the tools and techniques available to you and your team when implementing an intervention and delivering a solution to the client
Your proposal for delivering a potential solution to the client
You will deliver this as a brief to your team, this can be as a written document, ppt with supplementary notes or other method (e.g. recorded presentation with accompanying handout) so long as it meets the above requirements.
The following exercise introduces you to supply chain management strategies and collaboration in a team setting.
Complete the exercise, Interactive Analysis: Creating Value Through Operations. A transcript of this interactive exercise is also available.
Consider what you learned in the experience and respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
How does Amazon’s supply chain work?
How has Amazon’s supply chain given it a competitive advantage?
In the exercise, what additional research should the consulting team gather and analyze?
In the exercise, what process should the consulting team recommend for solving the internal risks to the supply chain and mitigating the conflict between labor and senior management?
Scenario: You are a recent graduate working in an organization that has had a lot of baby boomers retire. There are still a few baby boomers working along with many Generation X employees. Millennials are about one-third of the organization’s employees. The millennials are very diverse racially and ethnically. There have been many generational and cultural misunderstandings and complaints. The complaints include millennials supervising older employees and older employees supervising millennials. All the generational groups complain that they don’t understand the other groups. You have been asked by the top executives to do a 3-5 page single-spaced report on how to create more effective cross-cultural teams. Once one is a supervisor or manager, he or she is managing teams. Effective teams are the key to effective organizations.
Summary: Summarize the cultural characteristics in chapter 5 and include some of the characteristics of millennials (from the first-week assignment). Focus on the behaviors and beliefs that hold some employees back in their careers. Bridging those cultural differences is key to developing employees and employees being seen as leadership material.
Analysis: Define the 5 foundation cultural competencies and give a concrete example of how each applies to racial/ethnic, gender, and millennials. Briefly discuss how these foundation cultural competencies will create better relationships among the employees. The foundation cultural competencies are used to develop professional relationships with other managers in the middle management ranks. At the executive level, the relationships are with other organizations and community and political groups.
Recommendations: describe 3 to 5 organizational changes that you would recommend to the top executives of your organization to create more effective cross-cultural and cross-generational teams using the five foundation cultural competencies. Develop a brief implementation plan for your recommendations.
Describe your strategic audit company’s current social responsibility and corporate governance policies, and what they are doing or not doing to practice effective social responsibility and corporate governance. You may use what references you find. ie Gulfstream.
