Describe the hotel indicating its location, size, source market, and other features that are relevant to sustainability

Topic: Hotel Sustainability Campaign for Guests

Format: 2 page summary + Poster design ( I will do the poster design)

Referencing style for this assessment is APA6. Please note: Any reference that is used to support your work should be put at the end of the summary. References are excluded in the page limits.

[Background]

Environmental issues and green initiatives are very important to hotel operations. Accommodation providers can reduce the burden of their operations on the environment in several ways. Hotels can take supply-sided measures, such as equipping the hotel building with features that minimize the use of resources; or working with employees. They can also take demand-side measures, such as trying to convince hotel guests upon arrival to behave in an environmentally friendly manner. However, there are many challenges in engaging hotel guests in sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives. For example, many guests who behave in an environmentally-friendly way at home do not demonstrate similar behaviour towards sustainability when on vacation (Juvan & Dolnicar, 2014). Second, many hotels manage poorly in delivering an understandable and clear message to their guests about their sustainability initiatives.

[Task]

You are required to study hotel sustainability. Design a campaign poster to motivate hotel guests to be less wasteful of food or to reduce energy consumption, i.e., air conditioning, lighting, (hot) water etc. This can be what they use in room or what the hotel uses in servicing their rooms, i.e., washing linen, water/detergent, amenities, etc. In addition, you may consider awareness of how guests contribute to waste and ways to ensure waste is recycled and diverted from landfill, i.e., single-use plastic items.

Provide a 2-page summary for the hotel management team to:

  • Describe the hotel indicating its location, size, source market, and other features that are relevant to sustainability (e.g., hotel vision, past contribution in promoting sustainability);
  • Explain why the hotel sustainability initiative is important for the selected hotel;
  • Justify your poster design (use an evidence-based approach considering theories in consumer behaviours, environmental psychology, peer pressure and communication);

Briefly discuss how to deliver your campaign poster to the hotel guests (e.g., where, when, what type of guests, and how).

*You do not have to do the following part, but have to give me an idea

Follow the steps to develop a poster for hotel guests:

  • Select one hotel
  • Promote one hotel sustainability initiative (note: choose one environmental initiative only, e.g., reduce food waste, water consumption, or plastic items);
  • Illustrate what actions you encourage guests to undertake to achieve the sustainability initiative.
  • You can use Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign/Illustrator or other poster design software to make your poster. Save as a PDF/JPG file and submit the electronic version to blackboard.

Briefly discuss how to deliver your campaign poster to the hotel guests (e.g., where, when, what type of guests, and how).

1. a. What are the organizational characteristics of the hospital? Of the department?

Please read the Case Study carefully.  Prepare a 3 to 5-page paper addressing each of the major topic areas.  The paper should be written in 12-point font, single or double spaced, and include a separate title page with your name, course name and number and date.  Your name and page numbers should also be on any subsequent pages as well.

Your document should be error free (typos and grammar), be well organized, thoughtful, easy to follow and discuss/address each major topic completely and thoroughly.  It should include headings for each of the major topic areas (these are bolded in the Case Study Instructions), contain at least 5 citations somewhere in the paper (which can be text, class article or clip or an independently chosen resource) and also incorporate at least 3 key class concepts in each of the major topic sections.  The key class concepts should be underlined.

Case Study

Susie Smith had been a registered nurse for 25 years and a nurse manager for more than 10 years when she was asked to take over as nurse manager of a particular unit known throughout the hospital as the “danger zone.”  Although she had heard a few things about this floor, because of the size of the hospital and her recent assignment in a relatively removed area, Susie had little information about why the area was so designated.

After 3 months on the job, Susie had formed some strong opinions regarding the bases of many of the unit’s problems.  To her, the majority of the staff exhibited a complete lack of professionalism.  Susie was convinced of this for a number of reasons:

  • There were many appearance problems and many violations of the departmental dress code. If there were a worst dressed list, her nurses would be on it.
  • The unit’s rate of absenteeism was the worst of any nursing unit in the hospital.
  • Two unsuccessful attempts by unions to organize the nursing staff had been originated with “danger zone” nurses.
  • Susie had never before seen a unit with such a high level of schedule juggling- shift trade requests for specific days off and especially changes to the schedule at the last minute.

It was not long before Susie found herself becoming highly cynical about the unit and its future.  It seemed to her that nursing meant no more to many of these people than a paycheck and that they constantly put their social lives and personal preferences before the needs of the patients.

At about the six-month point in her tenure, Susie received a startling piece of second hand information from a friend who swore her to secrecy as the source.  It was apparently a closely guarded senior management team secret that her unit was deliberately maintained as a concentration of marginal employees.  It was, in Susie’s friend’s words, “to keep the problem children all in one place as much as possible, so they won’t disrupt other units.”  Susie’s friend also shared that if Susie simply quietly did her job, that she would be reassigned in about 18 months, when it would become someone’s job and problem.

Susie was shocked and angry.  However, the more she thought about it, the more she became determined to do something with the time she had left on the unit.  With about a year until the 18-month mark, she decided she was going to do everything in her power as a leader to turn the “danger zone” into an effective, efficient, and accountable nursing unit.

Case Study Instructions

Using the information and guidelines provided, at a minimum, please address the following:

  1. The Business Problem – Quantify the problem that Susie needs to solve.
  2. The Organizational Environment – Provide an Environmental Assessment of Susie’s circumstances
    1. What are the organizational characteristics of the hospital? Of the department?
    2. Is quality of care an issue?
    3. What evidence is there to support your answer?
    4. What are Susie’s major managerial challenges?
    5. What tools and/or techniques will serve her best as she tackles this business problem?
  3. The Challenges of Employee Engagement – Discuss Susie’s role in employee motivation, empowerment, engagement and development
  4. Managing Through Change – Discuss Susie’s role as change agent.
    1. What employee dynamics should she anticipate?
    2. How will she address them?
    3. What communication strategies will she use and why?
  5. The Execution Strategy – Develop a simple 10 to 20 step Project Plan, including timeframes, through which Susie will operationalize her solutions. You may use whatever time period you wish.
  6. The Use of Human Resources – How can the department be best leveraged in Susie’s efforts?
  7. Management Controls, Measures and Monitors – How will Susie create accountability, monitor progress and measure success?

Discuss how you plan to apply what was leaned to your career

You are to choose a topic that is of interest to you and pertinent to human resource management, and write an original research paper on that topic.  The paper should be double spaced, with one inch margins, and a total of between 2,400-3,500 words (Sections I through IV), not including the bibliography.  Due to the word count guidelines, you will need to be concise and judicious in your writing.  The longest section will be the review of literature, which will likely consist over half the total length of the paper.  In some cases, the review of literature section may include charts and exhibits. If charts and/or exhibits are used, they should be numbered (such as Table 1, or Figure 1).  A high-quality, well-organized, succinct product is expected, free from misspellings and poor grammar.  Consult The Elements of Style often to improve your written communication.

Your instructor must approve your topic no later than September 8.  You will read and analyze of a minimum of at least seven different professional journal articles from current business periodicals (2015-present).  See Appendix C (p. 607) in your textbook for an excellent list of acceptable professional journals.  In addition, you may also refer to books that further your insight into the topic.   Your research paper will contain: an executive summary that explains the importance of the topic, a summary of the information you read, and conclusions. Use proper citations of your sources following the American Psychological Association (APA) format, comparison/contrast of the various author’s opinions and perspectives.  You must distinguish between the various sources of information using citations which follow APA format, and your thought/opinions on the topic.  Finally, the bibliography section will list all your sources of information following APA format.  You can find helpful APA guides at https://und.edu/academics/writing-center/apa-format.html, https://www.mendeley.com/guides/apa-citation-guide, http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx,  http://www.csun.edu/~hbsoc126/soc4/Writing%20Sample%20and%20Refernce%20Guide%20as%201%20file.pdf, and https://www.crk.umn.edu/sites/crk.umn.edu/files/apa6thedition.pdf.

The research paper should be the student’s own work, in their own words.  Plagiarism is a very serious matter, and there will be little tolerance for academic dishonesty.  All sources of information must be clearly identified.  When drawing on ideas/facts/interpretations/conclusions developed by another author, it is essential the source be cited correctly at the point(s) at which the information is presented, and in the bibliography section using appropriate APA format.  When using exact words and/or phrases of another author in your research paper, the student must use quotation marks and exact page number. It may be useful paraphrase the work of another author in order for the writing to flow smoothly, but the original source of the information/idea must still be cited at the end of the sentence where it is presented.   Students must use extreme caution in referencing and use of sources, and become familiar with what constitutes plagiarism. Two websites with useful information on the topic are: http://www.plagiarism.org, and https://www.indiana.edu/~istd/index.html.
