What are some challenges or issues that should be considered before a project team implements a blog or a wiki?

These questions are intended to provoke in-depth thinking about Project Management. As a candidate of project management, you should expand on the material that you researched through the course in addressing the discussions and assignments. Based on that knowledge, you should express your own perspective on the exam topics supported with examples, illustrations, commentaries, etc. – in other words, demonstrate integrative knowledge.

I expect to see, on average, at least 600-700 words for each answer (a minimum of about a page, single spaced or two pages, double spaced (not including references). In your responses use appropriate and properly cited references.

Respond to the following questions:

  1. As a project manager, choosing the appropriate project-oriented development process is an important decision. What criteria should you consider when making this decision – specifically when deciding between applying the waterfall and agile methodologies. This should include examples of products and/or case studies using material found in textbooks and/or other public sources. Be sure to cite all sources used and appropriately cite direct quotes.
  2. Social software are relatively new but widely known sources of information that can provide new opportunities for managing projects that may not be covered in published textbooks. What are some challenges or issues that should be considered before a project team implements a blog or a wiki? Research appropriate examples existing on the Web and refer to them to illustrate your analysis of the potential of these sources of Project Management knowledge.
  3. Offshoring continues to be a controversial business topic, especially with the economic downturns and local resistance to the globalization of business (e.g., protests against the World Trade Organization, union calls for protection of jobs, political positions, etc.). Using open sources of information, find and research three relevant issues and sources of information on offshoring. Cite your sources and articulate your interpretation of the issues identified as they impact Project Management practices.
  4. Describe an ethical dilemma that a project team member might face while being part of an IT project. Discuss how the project manager could aid in avoiding or resolving such a dilemma. Discuss where this dilemma falls within PMI codes. What are the potential effects on the project should the situation goes unresolved?

How does the organization operate? How are tasks/work projects accomplished? Is the organization domestic or international? Locations?

You are tasked to represent the Board of Directors of your organization in your selected industry. You are the top management team of the organization located (your choice of locations). You believe that productivity, quality of product, innovativeness, profitability (and/or cost effectiveness), and morale are much lower than they should be to meet the competitive and social challenges of the year 2019 and beyond. You will present a statement of management philosophy and a sketch of the basic human resources policies and procedures you believe will lead to the goals you seek. Members of the Board of Directors will be looking at (1) the soundness and innovativeness of your recommended program, (2) evidence of industry-study, interviews (if available), and library research, and (3) the quality of your presentation. The paper should include an assessment of the student’s current organizational demographics (If you are not working or do not have a frame of reference, you can research an organization through the online library or http://www.greatplacetowork.com/best/list-bestusa.htm) that is researched and potential impact using the following outline:
Parameters for the organization:

· You are free to describe the organization with which you will be associated. You will need to provide some level of detail of your organization. Use your general knowledge, coursework, and research to accomplish this.
· Even though you are required to provide general organizational details, your primary function is human resources. Analyze based on this premise.
· Assume that a core group of managers and employees (approximately 250) are already in place.
· Your organization can produce a product or service.

Requirements for the Overview of the organization:

· Description of what the organization does and organizational structure. Be specific. You may include an organizational chart.
· How does the organization operate? How are tasks/work projects accomplished?
· Is the organization domestic or international? Locations?
· Who are the competitors?
· What are the factors that you believe are critical to success in this organization?
· What is the culture like?
· How is information communicated?
· Why would people want to work for this organization?

Requirements for Policies

· Present a statement of management philosophy.
· Develop the rationale for policies and procedures that you feel are needed to achieve the organizational goals. Minimally, policies on sexual harassment, promotion, and dismissal should be included. Include relevant legal issues. This rationale must be supported by relevant research; not just your opinion on what is needed.
· Develop a minimum of 5 actual policies to be included in appendices.
· Analyze implications and draw conclusions.
· Provide recommendations to include the rationale for selecting the policies and the impact on the organization.
· Provide a plan of communication for implications.

Have the research questions been answered? Were aims and objectives met? Recommendations should be practical and academic.

This assignment requires you to conduct and write about a research project based on a topic of your choice. Your topic should be related to your studies and agreed with your supervisor.  There should be an attempt to answer the research question posed (by the student). It should incorporate an in-depth critical review of the related academic literature and recommendations as to a practical implementation of a solution to the identified research problem. Detailed assessment criteria can be found in the following section.

Your Report should be structured in a way that includes all of the following sections. A document expanding on the requirements of each section is located on Moodle:

  • Title Page
  • Signed Declaration of Originality
  • Ethical Approval Certificate
  • Acknowledgements
  • Abstract
  • Contents Page

How terrorism effects tourist destination choices. What is currently being done to prevent terrorism in tourism.

How and why terrorism effects tourist destination choices (France & UK can be the 2 countries discussed and compared in this dissertation as an e.g.) The chosen topic will focus on the effects of terrorism on tourist destination choices as it is one of the most important issues in the tourism industry and at the same time one of the least discussed. This study considers the impact that terrorism has on an individual’s intention to travel to certain destinations, whilst studying the level of terror at two specific destinations, Paris and London, and if an individual’s level of fear influences their decision. My aim is to demonstrate how significant this topic actually is by analyzing the following:

1. Why terrorism occurs in the first place
2. How terrorism effects tourist destination choices.
3. What is currently being done to prevent terrorism in tourism.
4. what more can be done.

Semester Project and Course Content

This represents a description of the semester project and a description of the content of this course.  We will discuss this content in class, become familiar with it through homework and in-class practice test, use it in the case, the project and it will be the subject of examinations.

The semester project is to form working groups of four or five students (I will assign those who do not have a group) to determine the equity value of a company to be assigned, (the “Company”).  You are to value the equity of Micropac Industries, Inc. (OTCMKTS: MPAD) as if it were privately held.  The Company’s stock is traded publically and it was chosen because its information is readily available.  Your conclusion will be that the value is _____________________ or between ________________ and _________________, not that its market value is understated or overstated.  Your conclusion must be independent of the quoted market value.

View this company as if you are evaluating it as an acquisition of 100% of the common stock outstanding, not as the price of one share of stock.  You are to consider this company as if you were making a long-term investment by buying the whole company, not a block of its stock.

Each group or team will be given an overall grade and each team member will be given an individual grade based on their fellow team member’s evaluations of their contribution and teamwork for the project and the case.

Planning period – length and rate of growth.  You are to determine whether this company will grow at a different rate of growth than its perpetual rate of growth.  If so, select a rate of growth for “planning periods” or a period of time during which this company would be expected to grow at a rate higher than the perpetual growth rate or the overall rate of growth rate of the economy.  For example, a target company may be expected to grow at 7% for 5 years and at the rate of growth of the overall economy or its industry thereafter.   This rate of growth should be based on your research into the overall economy and political climate, this industry, stock research analyst’s projections and investments the company is making in capital goods and working capital for the future.

How many 3 to years 5

Perpetual growth phase.  You are to select a rate of growth in perpetuity, which could be equal to, more than or less than the growth rate of the economy or even zero or negative.  This rate should be based on your research of the U.S. economy and the particular industry sector of ATRI.

Financial statement forecast.  Forecast a balance sheet and a statement of income for the planning periods described above, based on a study of the historical financial statements of the Company, your research described above and the forecasting techniques we will learn this semester.

Free cash flow forecast.  Forecast the cash flow as “Free Cash Flow to the Firm”, meaning the cash flow to all components of the capital structure.  Use this formula:

EBIT (Earnings before interest and taxes)

– Tax (EBIT X marginal tax rate)

= NOPAT (net operating income after tax)

+ Depreciation

  • CAPEX (Capital expenditures)
  • +NWC (Increase in net working capital)(*)

= FCFF (Free cash flow to the firm)

(*) Net working capital will exclude both non-operating cash and interest bearing debt.

Select a discount rate using WACC.  Weights and costs of elements of the capital structure.   Determine capital structure weights using values of components of the capital structure.

  • Interest bearing debt classified as a current liability. Unless circumstances would indicate otherwise, use book value and stated interest rate less tax effect. Rate (1-T).
  • Long-term debt. If the company has long-term debt, create a synthetic market yield-to-maturity by calculating and interest coverage ratio (EBIT/Interest expense) and referring to the Damodaran Ratings, Interest Coverage Ratio and Default Spreads table to obtain a default spread to add to the comparable Treasury Rate.  Give effect to taxes.  Rate (1-T). Use the synthetic market yield-to-maturity to determine market value for market structure weights.
  • Preferred stock.
  • If publically traded, use market value and determine cost using D/Po.
  • If not publically traded, and not significant to capital structure, use book value and dividend rate. If significant, then attempt to create a synthetic market value and cost by comparing to similar issues that trade more frequently.
  • Common stock. Use current market capitalization as an estimate.  Determine cost using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) [R(F) + b(MRP)].  Use the current 10 Year Treasury rate for R(F), obtain MRP from the Damodaran web site,  create a synthetic b by (1) selecting betas of comparable industry peers, deleverage those betas using the formula (see formula posted on elearning), average the deleveraged betas, re leverage the average beta based on the Company’s debt/equity ratio and marginal tax rate.  Remember we are assuming the Company is private.

Compute WACC [(wt of debt x cost) + (wt of preferred x cost) + (wt of common x cost)]

Discount the planning period FCF’s to PV using WACC.  Each FCF/(1+WACC)t.

Determine terminal value using DCF.  Take the FCF from the last planning period, convert it to “next year’s FCF” by FCF (1 + perpetual growth rate) then dividing by (Discount rate – perpetual growth rate).  FCF (1 + Gp)/(WACC – Gp).

Calculate Enterprise Value using DCF – Sum the PV’s (Discounted Planning Period PV’s and the TV PV).

Calculate Equity Value – (Enterprise Value + Cash – Interest Bearing Debt).

In the event that your FCFF is negative because of extensive investments in CAPEX or NWC, and those investments are financed by issuing debt or equity, then you may want to consider using FCFE and discounting those cash flows with cost of equity rather than WACC.  Please discuss this with me before proceeding.

Determine the Enterprise Value using relative valuation (Use CapIQ for comparables).

  • Selection a valuation ratio (Value relative to EBIT, EBITDA, FCF, PE, PEG, BV, Sales) and justify the selection. You may decide to use more than one ratio.
  • Determine a group of comparable industry peers (preferably of similar size, debt/equity ratios, and operating leverage).
  • Average the groups ratios to market value (i.e. MV/EBIT or MV/EBITDA, etc.) to obtain multiples (i.e. MV is 5 X EBIT, 2 X BV, 1.25 X Sales, etc.).
  • Apply the average multiple to EBITDA to the Company’s EBITDA or multiple to EBIT to the Company’s EBIT or multiple to the valuation ratio you have chosen.
  • Determine an appropriate illiquidity discount rate, based on the Company’s size, debt/equity ratio, leverage ratio, industry, etc. We understand this will be subjective.
  • Apply the illiquidity discount ratio to the terminal value of a comparable public company to determine the private company value.

Realize that some of the valuation ratios are for Enterprise Value (EBITDA, for instance) and some are for Equity Value (PE for instance).  You want to end up with the value of 100% of the common stock, or Equity Value.  If you use an Equity Value valuation ratio, then your result will be Equity Value.  If you use an Enterprise Value valuation ratio, then you will need to adjust Enterprise Value by added cash and deducting interest bearing debt.

I will need to be able to extract several items from your report for the purposes of comparison among the various reports, for example:

Y-T-M

Bottom Up Beta

Number of planning periods

Growth rate for planning periods

Perpetual growth rate

WACC

Illiquidity discount

Valuation ratio used (EBITDA, etc.)

Equity Value – Using DCF

Equity Value – Using relative valuation

The report should be word processed and the exhibits should be in Excel.

Here is a sample table of contents:

  1. Overview of the assignment, team members
  2. Overview of the Company( Micropac Industries) including analysis of historical income and cash flow. Make sure to include that We are forecastings the financial statements ballace sheet, Income statement and statement of cashflow alswo we are calculating WACC all these items are forecasted for 3 to 5 year at growth rate of 4.5% at 6% means

You will have to talk about the numbers of planning period and growth rate for planning period.

Also here is the list of 10k of the cpmany where you can find what s the company about or other stuff

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/65759/000101054920000010/micropac10k.htm

  1. Discussion of the Company’s industry with focus on outlook and competitors( Emcore corporation, Intest corporation and Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.
  2. Valuation of the Company. This is the guts of the report.  In discounted cash flow valuation, discuss your reasons for major assumptions for growth, WACC, etc.  You need to refer to the company, its competitors and the industry as necessary to justify your assumptions.  Be concise, use bullet point lists rather that long essays and refer to excel schedules in appendix as needed.  Same for market comparable and control transactions.  Discuss how comps were selected.
  3. Explain your conclusion of value.

Six to eight pages, not including exhibits should be plenty but use more if needed.  No clip art needed just well formatted text and exhibits.  Style as well as substance count, just as in the real world.  Each team will make a brief presentation of their conclusions to the class (and instructor) on the due date of November 27 and 29, 2018.

I am happy to help.  Each team will be given an overall grade and a grade based on evaluations by team members of each member’s participation and input.

Elaborate on the current trend in the area of humility in leadership, it’s effect on subordinates, how to measure this qualities of humility, and how to identify them in others.

Expanding on the previous work you created on this topic, please perform the following:

1. Elaborate on the current trend in the area of humility in leadership, it’s effect on subordinates, how to measure this qualities of humility, and how to identify them in others.

2. Include an introduction of the topic that includes a historical definition based on literature

3. Include a discussion of the current research in the field over the last 5 years.

4. Include a section that addresses future questions that will need to be addressed and/or explored in research. What do we need to explore next? What areas/questions are other researchers saying we still don’t know.

5. Use a minimum of ten substantial journal article resources as references.

6. Minimum of 10pages in length (not including the title page, abstract, or reference pages)

7. Include APA style reference page at the bottom.

Explain what is happening with your primary ratio over the time period you are examining.  Is your ratio increasing—decreasing—trending—describe what is happening to your ratio over this time period.

This week is a little different than the past two weeks. Complete discussion 3 using the financial statements from the firm you have chosen for your AAER paper. Then choose one of the earnings management techniques we have read about (chapters 12 through 18 in the text). Ideally it would be a technique used by your AAER firm but that is not required. You should choose a ratio that would be impacted by the earnings management technique you chose.

First calculate a time series of your ratio using the financial statements as reported.

Second you should recalcuate your ratio using either (A, B or C)

  1. restated financial statements if available,
  2. adjusting the financial statements based on reports in the AAER that indicate by how much the firm misreported a particular account, or
  3. making your own adjustment assuming your firm misreported one or more of its accounts by $100 million.

You will have to choose option C if you chose an earnings management technique that your AAER firm is NOT using. For example, if a firm is reporting bogus revenue of $100 million then accounts receivable would be $100 million to high and revenue would be $100 million to high.

Complete steps 1-7 of the ratio analysis using the as reported numbers and the adjusted numbers and compare them.

Step 1

Find the company or companies on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) website.  I recommend that you analyze only one of the two companies but the choice is up to you.  For some students doing two companies and being able to compare and contrast the companies helps them to focus their analysis.  However, for most students the additional work of calculating the ratios for two companies causes them to do a superficial analysis.  The quality of the analysis will influence your grade much more than the quantity of your analysis.  Go to the website www.sec.gov to find the financial statements.  In the top right corner click on ‘Company Filings’.  In the box under ‘Company Name’ Type in the company name exactly as I have listed it.  That should get you close enough to see what company to select.  I will assign the companies and the fiscal quarters you should focus on.  The financial statements you want are under filing type 10-Q and 10-K.  If you type in 10-Q or 10-K under the filing type box and then search it will bring up all of the financial statements for the firm.  I would recommend using the 10-Q because quarterly statements are simpler and it is easier to find the financial statements but it is up to you.

Step 2

Calculate several ratios—I would suggest at least one from each of the categories (profitability, liquidity, solvency, and activity/efficiency) from chapter 4 (chapter 11 in Marshall) in the text plus at least one ratio that you have found somewhere else or even made up.  You should examine these ratios over a 4 year period (No need to look at every quarter).  For example you might look at quarter 2 every year for 4 years—including the quarter that I have chosen.  Once you are used to looking up financial statements–if you do this strategically you should be able to examine 4 years of data by looking at only two separate years of financial statements.    Please do not discuss all of these ratios.  Your goal in calculating a number of ratios is to increase your chances of finding a ratio that is interesting and important.

Step 3

Choose a primary ratio to discuss.  This is a critical choice.  To score above 92 on the discussion posts I expect you to impress me.  You need to point out interesting relations between your ratio and other ratios that help provide insight into one of the companies or insight in comparing the two companies.  A poor choice of your primary ratio makes it difficult to have an impressive discussion.  For example if you choose the current ratio and that ratio has not dramatically changed over the time period you are analyzing (say it fluctuates between 1.5 and 1.7) and it is above 1.2—then this ratio is not capable of providing significant insight into the firm.  Choosing an insightful primary ratio is part of the analysis.  That is why you may want to calculate a number of ratios before you choose the one you think is most interesting.  Do not choose more than one primary ratio to discuss.  It is not uncommon for students to try and discuss and analyze several primary ratios.  In this case I choose the ratio that students have analyzed the best—and completely ignore the rest.  These students often get a mediocre score because it is a lot of work to thoroughly analyze one ratio and because they are trying to do several ratios they end up doing a superficial analysis on all of them.   The quality of the analysis will influence your grade much more than the quantity of your analysis.

PROHIBITED RATIOS

There are some ratios that either do not provide a lot of information or are almost always misinterpreted by students.  Consequently some ratios are banned from your analysis.

Cash Ratio—use the current ratio or acid-test ratio if you want to analyze liquidity

Working Capital—use the current ratio or acid-test ratio if you want to analyze liquidity

Earnings Per Share

Earnings Quality if it is a negative value.

Debt-to-Equity—use the debt ratio instead (total liabilities divided by total assets)

Ratios where the values are negative during the entire time-series you are analyzing.

Any ratio where the denominator is negative

I also strongly recommend that you do not use market ratios such as dividend yield and the P/E ratio.  These tend to be much more complicated and in 6 semesters of teaching this class I have only seen a few excellent discussion posts that have used a market based ratio for their primary ratio.  Nevertheless if you really want to examine these ratios and are sufficiently confident in your understanding of them then I do not want to restrict you.

Step 4

Explain your definition for your primary ratio.  Provide one sample calculation for one of the quarters you are examining.  For example you might say

—I chose the current ratio.  It is defined as current assets divided by current liabilities.  For Quarter 2 in 2010 the ABC Company has a current ratio of 2.0.  Current assets are 40,250,800.  Current liabilities are 20,125,400.  So the current ratio is 40,250,800/20,125,400 = 2.0.   No need to provide this much detail for every quarter you analyze.  Once is enough for your audience to see your definition and how you calculate it.

Step 5

Discuss why you chose your primary ratio.  What can this ratio tell about the company?  Are their particular values that are significant for this ratio? For example, a ratio of 1.0 for the current ratio is generally considered significant because ratios below one usually point to a lack of sufficient liquidity.  Convince me that your primary ratio is providing insight about the company.

Step 6

Provide a time-series analysis of your primary ratio—at least 4 years (using the same quarter each year).  You should be able to do this by examining two sets of financial statements.  If you are examining quarter 2 for the period from 2000 through 2003 you could look at the financial statements for 2001 and 2003 and that would provide you the information to make calculations for quarter 2 for each year from 2000 to 2003.  Explain what is happening with your primary ratio over the time period you are examining.  Is your ratio increasing—decreasing—trending—describe what is happening to your ratio over this time period.  Everyone should be able to complete steps 1-5.  You are just following my instructions.  This step—step6 and the remaining steps will give each student the opportunity to demonstrate their analyzing abilities and creativity in discussing something interesting and significant about the company and its situation.

Step 7

Examine the numerator and denominator of your primary ratio.  Step 7 and especially step 8 is where each student has the opportunity to demonstrate their analyzing abilities and creativity in discussing something interesting and significant about the company and its situation.  Describe the numerator and denominator.  Describe whether they are increasing or decreasing, trending, or scattered or just what is happening with them over time.  Just like you did with the primary ratio by itself in step 6.  How much of the variation in your primary ratio is explained by the numerator or denominator?  Is one or the other the dominant reason for the value and/or the changes in the value of the primary ratio.  This is where your choice of a primary ratio becomes critical.  If you choose a primary ratio that has not varied over time and neither the denominator nor the numerator are varying then you will not have a very interesting analysis.

Conduct a PESTEL analysis to develop a scenario analysis targeted at the year 2030. Explain which scenario represents the greatest threat to Ryannair and which one represents the greatest opportunity.

Instructions: This assessment focuses on the student’s understanding and application of strategic concepts associated with Strategic Position and Strategic Choice (Parts I and II of the textbook).
Report Task Investigate the European airline Ryannair (see the case study in the textbook) and prepare a 2500-word report that demonstrates understanding and application of Strategic Position and Strategic Choice as below:

• Conduct a competitive-forces analysis to determine the attractiveness of the European airline industry and how Ryannair should manage the competitive-forces it faces.

• Conduct a PESTEL analysis to develop a scenario analysis targeted at the year 2030. Explain which scenario represents the greatest threat to Ryannair and which one represents the greatest opportunity.

• Conduct a VRIO analysis to determine the resources and capabilities of Ryannair.

• Use the Strategic Position analysis above to inform the Strategic Choices Ryannair should adopt to improve its chances of being persistently profitable. Present and explain the recommended strategic choices in the Discussion section of the report. Report Structure: Note: Executive Summary, Table of Contents and Reference List do not contribute to the word count.
