The nursing research article I found in the databases was a study of the effects of emotional labor and job stress on depression among nurses. Since it’s been a common trend recently in the nursing world. The article addressed all 8 steps of the research process, clearly explained, and presented all the data. The introduction of the study talked about nurses who have increasing stress and high emotional labor have been shown in high rates of depression (Jung & Baek 2020). They also explained the purpose of the study. The methods section is where the authors explained what tools they used for the study. The authors Jung and Baek explain this by using a cross-sectional structural equation modeling study (p. 562). The study established the parameters and topics addressed such as emotional labor, job stress, social support, and depression. The results of the study showed how much each factor affected depression rates in nurses. “Moreover, increased emotional labor was found to be associated with decreased resilience, while decreased resilience was associated with an increased level of depression” (Jung & Baek 2020). The conclusion of the study talked about the importance of developing and applying programs that promote resilience to reduce the rate of depression in nurses.

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Brett Frischmann’s “There’s Nothing Wrong with Being a Luddite.” To what extent does the author succeed in his or her purpose? To what extent do you agree with the author?

Chapter 2 Notes

For many people, the words critic, critical, critique, and criticism have negative connotations. If using a different word (like evaluation, estimation, or appraisal) has a more balanced connotation for you, use it instead. You want to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Brett Frischmann’sThere’s Nothing Wrong with Being a Luddite. Your job isn’t to “tear him a new one”! Instead, you should give your assessment of the merits of his essay.

Chapter 2 of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum focuses on writing critiques. The authors organized the chapter around two broad questions:

  1. ) To what extent does the author succeed in his or her purpose?
  2. ) To what extent do you agree with the author?

Goal 1Summarize the source material. In this case, communicate Frischmann’s thesis and main points.
Goal 2Critique the source material. In this case, you will need to evaluate Frischmann’s essay.

Three broad questions can help guide your thinking as you evaluate his essay.
Question 1How well written is the essay? You’ll want to consider what he hoped to accomplish and how likely it was that the essay would have accomplished his goals.

Question 2To what extent do you agree with the author? Students don’t usually have much trouble with this question because they are pretty comfortable sharing their opinions.

Question 3How well is the issue framed? Your book doesn’t directly address this issue. Framing has to do with how authors choose to present information. An example might be helpful.
