Write the name of the song and three remarkable things about it. It can be subjective, but make sure what you write makes sense and is really a distinguishing and/or remarkable feature of the song.

For tracks 28-38 tracks (Two Bass Hit through Vital Transformation),

Write the name of the song and three remarkable things about it. It can be subjective, but make sure what you write makes sense and is really a distinguishing and/or remarkable feature of the song. And pick some moments from the ends of the songs, too, so I know you listened to the whole song. Also, you don’t have to get very technical, but using some vocabulary from class or naming specific instruments would be good. You can write bullet points instead of complete sentences, but make sure they are complete thoughts and make sense. To get credit, you need to show me that you really listened and thought about the track.

Here’s an example:
“Lady Be Good” (1936) Lester Young
– Starts with the piano playing an embellished version of the melody backed up by the drums and bass
– Lester Young plays an amazing improvised solo with lots of bouncy syncopation and smooth melodies
– Muted improvised trumpet solo backed up by Lester Young’s tenor sax and the rhythm section

vocabulary: Time, Rhythm, Beat, Tempo, Meter, Syncopation, Swing, Timbre, Melody, Harmony, Chord, Improvisation, Form.

Choose another piece/movement and listen to it in terms of tone color. Do the dynamics/articulation/textures vary? What effect does the variation or lack thereof have on the listener?

Music experienced

As opposed to a research paper, this assignment is intended to help you sharpen your skills in thinking and writing about music experienced while witnessing a ‘live’ performance. Although your original observations are the main focus, it is important that you demonstrate the knowledge and vocabulary below.

Be sure to watch the concert here and follow the instructions below;

In reference to the video above please follow the following instructions;

-Briefly introduce the event (venue, performers, occasion, etc.)
Choose one piece/movement and listen to it in terms of musical style. What does it tell you about the characteristic qualities of the composer and the genre?

-What aspects of the piece reveal it to be representative of a particular historical period? How does this type of listening affect your experience of the piece?

-Choose another piece/movement and listen to it in terms of tone color. Do the dynamics/articulation/textures vary? What effect does the variation or lack thereof have on the listener?

-Choose one piece/movement and listen to it in terms of its form (patterns, repetitions, contrasts, recurrences, variations of material). Summarize the results. How well can you do this during a single hearing of the piece? Is this type of listening rewarding to you?

-Out of the three pieces compare one of them to a Beethoven or Mozart piece using the three Copelandian modes of listening.

-What is the relative value of these different modes of listening? What other modes of listening can you imagine? What would you prefer?

When referring to a particular spot in the piece, make sure to include a timestamp. If you consult written materials, please give proper references in the paper. Feel free to write in the first person (e.g.: I noticed, etc.)

Detail the performers, their music, instrumentation, the performance venue and atmosphere, audience demographics and behavior (to the best of your ability), and any other information you feel captures the event’s essence.

Musical event

Music essay, give examination of how you, the author, felt about the subject matter. Rather a response than a review.

You will be describing and contextualizing the concert as both a cultural and musical event.
Writing in the first person, strike a balance between the objective and the subjective.
– Objectively: Detail the performers, their music, instrumentation, the performance venue and atmosphere, audience demographics and behavior (to the best of your ability), and any other information you feel captures the event’s essence.

Must be in own words and use only the link below.

What is the genre? When do you think the music was recorded? If applicable, who is the artist?

Music: “La Bruja” by Conjunto J

1. What is the genre?
Beas specific as possible. Many of the styles we are studying have a number of subgenres. If the music is blues, for instance, you should say whether it is urban or rural.

2. When do you think the music was recorded?
Your answer should not simply be based on recording quality, but rather on the way the genre of music has changed through time. Make sure to make reference to specific musical features.

3. If applicable, who is the artist?
If the music in question is not from a culture about which we have studied individual performers, you don’t need to answer specifically. So, if it is music by a gospel choir, for instance, I don’t expect you to identify the specific choir.

If the music is from a genre in which we have studied individual performers, you should say whom you think the performer might be and why. It is less important that you get exactly the right individual than that your reasoning be logical. As long as you know what the genre is and can explain it, a reasoned appraisal of who the performer might be will earn high marks.

This report must be based on aural observations and should not contain biographical information about the performers in question or extraneous information about the genre.

Identify a cultural theme or value exemplified by the work you have chosen, and link this theme or value to the sociopolitical context in which the work was produced. Why is this theme or value of relevance to the production of this work?

Musical Work

Paper Guidelines:
In an essay of at least three pages, present and defend a clearly articulated thesis regarding the cultural significance and meaning of a musical work in the classical tradition. The essay should examine one of the following works:
1. Handel’s Messiah
2. Mozart’s Don Giovanni
3. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9
4. Verdi’s Requiem
5. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue

Additional research about the work and its composer outside of the textbook will be necessary to complete this assignment. The essay should be organized around a central thesis that is clearly stated in the introduction. The essay should integrate the following issues and material into the development of this thesis:

1. Identify a cultural theme or value exemplified by the work you have chosen, and link this theme or value to the sociopolitical context in which the work was produced. Why is this theme or value of relevance to the production of this work?

2. Who composed the work? Describe at least three important aspects of this composer’s social and cultural environment that shaped his or her professional life.

3. To what period in music history does this work belong? Define at least three important aspects of the musical style of this period. In broad terms, how does this work reflect the cultural, aesthetic, and/or political values of this period?

4. What is the genre of the work (i.e. opera, cantata, program symphony, etc.)? What are the basic characteristics and historical background of this genre? What kinds of expectations might audience members have had when encountering a new work in this genre?

5. Select at least one movement or extended section of the work and describe its distinctive stylistic, dramatic, and/or formal aspects as they relate to the cultural and aesthetic values of the period.

The paper should be organized clearly by stating and developing a central thesis across the essay, supported by detailed description and examples. It should be proofread carefully and have no significant errors in grammar, syntax, and spelling. The essay should be at least three full pages in length, double spaced and should indicate any sources consulted in a bibliography with footnotes or endnotes using MLA format.
