2) Choose one of the genres that we explored in the course and summarize the history and issues surrounding it, according to the materials provided on that genre (lecture video, readings, and in class lectures).

You have been assigned a rap song that tells a story. You are to relate the events of the story in standard English.

You have been assigned a rap song that tells a story. You are to relate the events of the story in
standard English. It is not enough to summarize the song, you must relate all the events in the song
being sure to “translate” the slang into standard English. Additionally, you MUST discuss the
narrative elements of the story (setting, tone, characters, and climax). Often there is a video that
accompanies a song but, just as often, the video does not follow the song’s lyrics. You should be
sure to relate the events of the song and not video (unless the video accurately recreates the events
depicted in the song).

Where did they grow up? Is that present on the album? What mood does the beat reflect,

Attention: This is not an album review.  Again, this is about unpacking – tracking back into history hat exist in and around the artist and the narrative of an album As an artist working, songs sometimes take years to make. I have an affinity to read the by-lines in CD covers religiously, question the content and try to find out who the artist really is, let alone mixing a snare and a hi hat next to each other. It’s hard to believe that Eminem is the Eminem he says he is on the Marshall Mathers LP. After all, he never killed his mother or girlfriend, or did he? Emotionally, some songs can reflect our dreams, our nightmares, our visions or our past or the future. Tupac prophesized his death in his music, while 50 Cent got rich (and broke?) and didn’t die trying. This is the first assignment we ask you to use critical thinking about others and the world around you.

GUIDELINESExample: Wu-Tang Forever as an archival, mythical and biblical narrative of societal pressure and self-awareness. Sounds deep right? I want you to really LISTEN, not just hear an album. Dissect its meaning, the artists history, the codes in the songs and the references the artist speaks on. Where did they grow up? Is that present on the album? What mood does the beat reflect, who did they sample, is it relevant to the meaning of the song? Does it have something to do with the artist or the producer only? Are there any lyrics that define the album? (these are example questions). What is the person or people reflecting on in the song?Where do they come from and how did that shape the sound, aesthetic, content, lyrics and vibe? What are they bringing to light? Are their visuals? Does it change the experience of the album for you?

The other questions you should ask yourself are: What is missing from this record? Is it balanced? Does its aesthetic match the reality of the artists life? Can we tell if its’ honest or it is a record made to appease the masses? What does the artwork say and how does it reflect the sonics? Yo u a r e a l s o a l l o w e d t o d e v e l o p y o u r o w n i d e a s around the song freely. Just no ratings, no likes or dislikes, keep it heavy and really LIVE the song for the next couple of weeks.

FORMAT: You must cite at least two readings: books, articles (published on proper websites, genius.com) Use these are your topic headers. For example, if I was to write about Dead Prez’ BIGGER THAN HIPHOP, I could look into the study of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X or Sun Tzu. Outkast? Look into Atlanta. Pay attention to the lyrics, sometimes the Mcs drop references to political or social figures, books or writings. Wu-Tang? Read Rza’s book, read on the Albums and the movies attached to them. Think Critically, come up with a unique thesis. “TPAB is about the emancipation of a black man from both society and industry”

Due Date: November The DO NOTS: – Again, do not tell us how you feel about the song. Whether you first heard it at your prom or in your friends car is inconsequential to the songs content. Strictly talk about the song narrative and artist – Don’t fill your paper with the artists’ biography. Don’t tell us this is the artist umpteenth smash hit and that they grew up with two brothers and a dog. Focus on the time capsule that is the record. – Do not review the album quality. – Think Critically. Linear thoughts are not invited in this cipher Word Count: 1200 words – 1500 words

How can Classical music impact mental health and learning?

SECTION ONE: Frame a research topic (550-600 words)

A brief overview of the topic
Establish a single research question (this differs from the dissertation title) and develop a series of sub-questions to be explored throughout the dissertation
Do the research question and sub-questions provide a clear idea of what the research project is about/hopes to address?
How will you collate your research? If you intend to conduct interviews or distribute questionnaires (not mandatory – perfectly acceptable to rely on books and articles) please outline the questions you intend to ask.
What do you foresee being the outcome of the research project?
SECTION TWO: Construct a literature review (600-700 words)

Suggested literature review outline:

For a third-year study, it is recommended to review at least five pieces of academic literature.

Literature review Introduction

Briefly introduce the topic of the eventual essay you plan to write
What type of literature are you reviewing?
The scope of your literature
Literature review main body

Made clear the name of the author/s, the title of the publication, and when it was published?
Given an indication of the kind of audience, the material is intended for? (e.g. university students studying the subject, specialists or experts, general readers, or other)
What are the main arguments or points of the text? (This is the most important thing in your review.)
Provided an idea of the academic discipline the reviewed text fits into (e.g. music analysis, film studies, music history, philosophy, etc. etc.)?
Discuss the text’s usefulness to your particular research?
Literature review conclusion

SECTION THREE: Critically reflect on the ethical considerations of the chosen research topic (150-200 words)

Outline how data will be collected
Explain any potential ethical considerations or, conversely, fully justify how your research does not infringe any ethical guidelines
SECTION FOUR: Construct and implement a realistic research timetable (150-200 words)

It is useful to work out how many weeks you have until you need to submit your completed dissertation and draw a chart showing these weeks. Block out the weeks when you know you will be unable to work, and mark in other main commitments you have that will take time during this period. Then allocate research tasks to the remaining time.

It is very important to be realistic about how long each task is likely to take. Some focused thought at the beginning, then at the planning stage of each phase, could save hours later on.  Write down the resources needed for each stage. It could be a time in the library; the resource of your working hours; or the use of equipment or room space that needs to be booked in advance.
