What do these compositions tell us about musical adaptability in both traditions? Do you think that an Indonesian musician’s interest in Western music can be tied with the national concept of Unity in Diversity?

Evaluation of Gamelan/Western Hybrid Compositions

Listen to the Chapter 7 Spotify tracks 19, 23, 25, and 26 (see embedded playlist below).
Write an essay two paragraphs long (200-250 words each) analyzing these tracks in a critical, objective way. These tracks are gamelan/western “hybrid” compositions, meaning they combine musical elements found in both traditions.

Here are some questions you might answer in your writing:
What do these compositions tell us about musical adaptability in both traditions?
Do you think that an Indonesian musician’s interest in Western music can be tied with the national concept of Unity in Diversity?
If the group is favored over the individual in Indonesian society, is the solo work and hybrids of I Wayan Balawan (pg. 112, PL 7-25) respectful to his culture and that from which he borrows? Explain.
Do you find this “hybrid” style more effective than either original one?
Do you think that this sort of borrowing from one tradition for insertion in another is respectful or valid?
Would a better term be “fusion”? If so, would the outcome be more respectful?

Hip hop

Now that we have examined the background of hip hop and discussed the four elements, let’s bring the discussion into the present. Hip hop has become a global phenomenon that has gone beyond just the music and the four elements. For this discussion, find a news article—no older than one month—that is related to hip hop.

(A news/current events article, so no gossip: no TMZ or People magazine, for example. Another example: an album release is not an acceptable article. You should look for some intersection of hip hop with other current events.) You are not limited to national news; feel free to look at articles from around the world. Your discussion post should discuss the topic in the news article you chose and how it is connected to the historical material we have studied thus far. Please include a link to the article.

Write a 3-page research paper and can choose from one of the topics below and must address all components of the art form as it pertains to hip-hop.

Transition of blues and jazz music into the modern hip-hop genre

Students must write a 3-page research paper and can choose from one of the topics below and must address all components of the art form as it pertains to hip-hop. All papers must have three sources including an online source, a book, and a scholarly journal article. Chicago style citation format is required for this paper. Select one of the topics below.

Review the transition of blues and jazz music into the modern hip-hop genre, focusing on the specific cultural references that highlighted the blues and jazz periods and how they relate to modern hip-hop cultural ideals. Through your research, ask yourself what blues and jazz musicians were trying to say about their culture, why they were disallowed from saying it in other ways and what was the significance to their culture at the time. Apply those same criteria to modern hip-hop and discuss what this transition may mean in regards to the changing cultural times.
