Applying the Gibbs Reflective Model
It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost. It is from the feelings and thoughts emerging from this reflection that generalisations or concepts can be generated and it is generalisations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively. (Gibbs 1988) Using this 6 step model should help to identify your strengths, areas for development and actions you can take to enhance your professional skills. Steps 1 – 3 relate to what happened during the experience and steps 4 – 6 focus on how you could improve on the experience and outcome in the future.

Step 1 Description
This should be a brief description of the experience or event to set the scene and give context.

Step 2 Feelings
Consider what you were thinking and how you felt before the experience.
How did you feel during the experience?
How did you feel after the experience?
This is another short descriptive step, rather than being analytical.

Description

Feeling

Evaluation
Analysis
Conclusion

Action Plan

Step 3 Evaluation
Evaluation looks objectively at both positive and negative aspects of the experience.
Describe key elements that went particularly well.
Was there anything that did not go well or did not work?
If appropriate, you can include what others did or did not do well.

Step 4 Analysis
Analysis attempts to explain why the experience was positive or negative and should form the largest section of your reflection. Take into account points made in the previous steps and identify any factors which helped you e.g. previous experiences, carrying out research or consulting with others. Consider your role in the experience and how you contributed to the success of this experience? If things did not go to plan, why do you think this was e.g. lack of preparation or external factors beyond your control? It can be useful to consider other people who were involved in the experience. Did they have similar views or reactions to you? If not, why do you think that was the case?

Step 5 Conclusion
Focus on what you have learned.
Are there any skills you developed as a result of the experience? If so, how would you apply them in future experiences or situations? Are there areas of knowledge or particular skills you now need to develop? Is there anything you would do differently in the future? Try to give specific examples.

Step 6 Action Plan
What specific actions can you now take to build on your knowledge or skills? You could include any training that would benefit you (formal or otherwise), as well as identifying sources of information or support (people or resources).

Briefly explain the Engel (1977) Biopsychosocial Model which you will use for your assessment. Identify a patient’s need (health problem) and assess it holistically from the biological, psychological and social aspects.

The science of decision making

For this assessment you will need to select a patient/ service user from a recent placement. Identify one need experienced by the patient/service user and explore the impact this will have using the Biopsychosocial Model. You will need to include a critique of the care given related to this need using evidence to support your views. This needs to focus on the decisions made by the care team, including any reasoning for interventions and treatment. From the evidence used, you need to offer recommendations for how this care could be enhanced or improved to ensure patient centred care.

 Module Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcome 5.

Critique the care, intervention and treatment plan of a given patient across the lifespan with appropriate explanation.

Assignment Guidelines: Case study structure

  1. Introduction (150 words).

Start with a brief introduction of your chosen patient using approximately 30 – 50 words. You will need to provide more information of the patient in the appendix. Present your introduction and ensure it answers these 3 questions:

  1. What? The introduction needs to clearly explain what this case study is about. This section needs to explain in your own words what is required in the assignment brief given above.
  2. How? The second part of the introduction need to outline how this case study is structured. You need to summarise the details given in the body.
  3. Why? An introduction needs to articulate why critiquing and evaluation of care is of significance to care delivery.
  4. Body (1200 words)
  1. Briefly explain the Engel (1977) Biopsychosocial Model which you will use for your assessment.

  1. Identify a patient’s need (health problem) and assess it holistically from the biological, psychological and social aspects. Critique the care for that need based on whether it meets all the biopsychosocial needs which arise from that need, whether it is supported by evidence or not and then, recommend a better care plan. (For example, how would the stoma affect the patient’s physical/psychological status/quality of life or how would patient with schizophrenia cope with one of their symptoms). You will need to support your critique and reasoning with evidence-based practice.

  1. From your critique, identify the recommendations that would be appropriate to introduce to the patient’s care plan, based on the latest evidence-based research / practice.

  1. Conclusion (150 words)

Summary: Put a short concluding statement of approximately 50 words then summarise the key learning points that have emerged from your critique.

  1. References

Appropriate referencing is an important element of academic writing.

  1. Appendices

In a table, you will give more information on your patient/service user with the following information:

  • Presenting complaint /symptoms
  • Past medical history
  • Medication
  • Intervention/Treatment
  • The implemented care plan for the patient for the identified problem.

Do ensure that all information identifying the patient and the Trust/ Service provider are anonymised.

What have you learned from your students, your fellow graduate students, and yourself as a student about what students need from their teachers? How will you demonstrate that you care about student success?

Self Reflection

Now that you have almost graduated (MSN in Nurse Educator), address the following questions that are derived from the four lenses for reflective practice in teaching and the person-centered care models outlined in the lesson.

1. What are your strengths as an educator that you will carry forward in practice? Consider your own reflections as well as feedback from your mentor, peers, and instructor. Where do you need to grow (autobiographical lens; prerequisites to person-centered care)?

2. What have you learned from your students, your fellow graduate students, and yourself as a student about what students need from their teachers? How will you demonstrate that you care about student success (student lens; care processes and student-centered outcomes)?

3. What type of working environment do you seek in the future (peer lens; learning environment)? What kind of support do you need from your peers? What type of employer best suits your professional goals?

4. What is your plan for lifelong learning? What further credentials and certifications will you seek? How will you develop as a scholar? What are your plans for publication and presentations? What are your professional passions going forward and how will your MSN help you pursue them (theoretical lens)?

5. Reflecting back on your direct care practicum experience, how did this differ from your undergraduate practicum experiences? What tools did to use during the direct care practicum?

Does the concern primarily occur at the micro, meso, or macro level? How would you address this issue? What impact might your solution have on the other levels of the system? In what ways could interprofessional collaboration be used to resolve the issue?

Many of you have experience in complex adaptive systems whether you realize it or not. Thinking about your current or future practice area ( nurse practitioner) identify an issue or concern. In your initial response, describe the concern. (My concern is healthcare disparities for the poor and underprivileged) Does the concern primarily occur at the micro, meso, or macro level? How would you address this issue? What impact might your solution have on the other levels of the system? In what ways could interprofessional collaboration be used to resolve the issue?

Define and/or describe grand, middle range, and micro-range nursing theory. Which theory are you most likely to use in your practice? Explain your reason.

Understanding Nursing Theory

Due:

In this written assignment, you will examine each of the three types of nursing theory-grand, middle range and micro-range.

Step 1 Write a two-page (minimum) paper, not including the title page or the reference page. For all professional papers, you will need a title page, an introduction paragraph, the body with research, a conclusion and a reference page. All format must be in 7th edition APA.

For the body of your paper, address the following objectives and separate using distinct paragraph headers:

  • Define and/or describe grand, middle range, and micro-range nursing theory. For each type of theory, give one theorist and his or her theory as an example.
  • Which theory are you most likely to use in your practice? Explain your reason.
  • Which theory would you like to incorporate more into your practice in the future? Explain your reason.

Step 2 When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor. Click on Assignment 5.1 to submit the assignment.

Analyze the data provided in the Dashboard and select an area of performance that needs improvement. Include information on why this area was chosen. Develop a nursing plan that includes suggestions on how to improve performance on the selected indicator.

Dashboard Analysis and Nursing Plan

As Dr. Rempher and Ms. Manna discussed this week, data from the NDNQI is used to improve nursing practices and support the strategic outcomes of an organization. This data is also used to create the Dashboard. The Dashboard, then, is used to create an action plan. Correctly interpreting information presented on the Dashboard provides nurses with a better understanding of the goals of the action plan.

To prepare

For this Assignment, use the Dashboard located in this week’s Resources, to interpret the data and frame a nursing plan based on best practices.

Review the Week 5 Assignment Rubric, provided in the Course Information area.
Review the Week 4 Resources that pertain to the NDNQI and use of dashboards
Choose a Nurse-Sensitive Quality Indicator that needs improvement based on the data presented in the Dashboard. Reflect on how you would develop a nursing plan with suggestions on how to improve performance in the chosen area.
Develop a nursing plan that outlines suggestions on how to improve performance in the chosen area.
Provide at least three best practices from evidenced-based literature to support your nursing plan.

Evaluate and reflect on your personal image of professionalism. Create and discuss changes that can be made by you and other nurses to improve the perception of nursing by the public and patients.

The Power of a Professional Image

The Gallop Poll rates 11 professions annually, based on the public’s perception of the honesty and ethical standards of the profession.  With the exception of 2001 when firefighters were recognized for their fearless and remarkable efforts during and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is important for nurses to be recognized as a nurse in the agency where they practice.

Nurses demonstrate a sense of pride in their profession when they portray a professional image to the public. Patients state that it is important for them to be able to recognize the nurse when they are receiving health care.  Nurses are leaders, it is important that we recognize the image we portray in our clinical practice and reflect on how well our personal image reflects our education and knowledge.

Assignment Objectives

  • Evaluate and reflect on your personal image of professionalism (Course Objectives 4, 5 and Student Learning Objectives 1, 2, 6, 8)
