A 4000 word, written critical analysis of case scenario identified in practice, exploring the biopsychosocial determinants of ill health and a critical appraisal of actual or proposed biopsychosocial interventions within the context of contemporary clinical care.

By the end of this module students will be able to:

Indicative Module Content

The module will explore complex mental health conditions from various perspectives, whilst critically appraising these viewpoints both independently and interdependently. The module will offer students the ability to view complex mental health conditions with regards to clinical presentations and pathoplastic influences. Students will have an opportunity to identify and explore the features of complex mental health disorders across the lifespan and will develop an appreciation of the biological, psychosocial and cultural factors influencing health, wellbeing, and illness. They will consider experiences and difficulties that might preclude the person from seeking and receiving health care such as stigma and discrimination- including the subtleties and latent bias.  They will examine and reflect on the process of evidence-based decision making in collaboration with service users, families, carers and other professionals. They will examine the formulation and appraise the evidence base, including the limitations, of the biopsychosocial treatment modalities available.

Module learning outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of differing theories of development that contribute, or prevent, mental health conditions; and be able to critically appraise the transition points across the lifespan for potential or actual vulnerability, crisis, or mental illness.
  2. Identify and critically examine the key principles related to aetiology, pathogenesis, and clinical management of serious mental illnesses whilst acknowledging influencing and inhibiting factors for biopsychosocial interventions, in addition to the limitations of therapeutic interventions.
  3. Deconstruct and analyse biopsychosocial influences and how these can predispose or perpetuate complex mental health conditions whilst acknowledging that such factors are malleable across the lifespan.
  4. Critically analyse contemporary research and clinical guidelines to promote health and wellbeing when working with service users, carers and families- with focus upon decision making to promote health and the further prevention of illness.
  5. Demonstrate achievement of the proficiencies and nursing procedures as identified in Part 3 of the Pan London PAD

Provide your nurse manager with your estimates on the increase/ decrease in revenue for next year’s budgeting.

The nurse manager in orthopedics has asked for your assistance with a finance project. She is being asked to estimate revenue for the next fiscal year based on the projected number of hip replacements increasing from 300 this year to 340 next year.

The nurse manager must also factor in the expected changes in sources of revenue by payer. It is estimated that the hospital will lose some contracted insurers due to local competition, and see an increase in Medicare and Medicaid patients due to area demographics and economic conditions. She has provided you with the numbers from this year’s budget and the projections on numbers and payment amounts for next year.

Instructions
Prepare a financial forecasting memo to your nurse manager that:

Part One – Financial Forecasting Model

Contains a completed financial forecasting model by downloading the Financial Forecasting Model to:
Calculate the income projected from each payer source and total for the year to compare next year’s revenue to this year’s revenue.
Provide your nurse manager with your estimates on the increase/ decrease in revenue for next year’s budgeting.
Part Two – Financial Forecasting Memo

Prepare a nursing action plan in poster format for improving one of the following key areas

Your hospital received $4,000,000 in revenue this past year. Medicare withholds 2.6% of this amount ($) until the value-based purchasing scores are in. If the scores are good this year, the hospital will earn back this money. If scores are below the national average, the hospital can lose this money. Twenty five percent (25%) of this score is based upon the Community Engagement patient satisfaction score (HCAHPS). Last year’s patient satisfaction scores (HCAHPS) in the following areas were below the national average, which cost your hospital $398,000 in revenue.

The hospital director of Quality Improvement has asked you to participate in developing a nursing action plan for your facility.
