Do you feel that scientists should be cut out of the policy making process, particularly on environmental issues, when their research is proven and widely accepted and is being ignored and disputed?

Each week throughout this course you will explore both sides of an environmental controversy. This week you look at the issue of science and politics. Review the background information. Then, using the References along with resources from your own research, write a 1-2 page response to the questions that follow. Remember to cite your sources using proper APA format.
Background Information
Today there are many complaints over the politicization of science. Many people believe politics should not play a role in science, but once government funds science, the funding decisions become political. In most social institutions, disagreements are settled by debate. Science in contrast, uses experiments to prove or disprove theories. Science is testable, and is self-proving. If a better explanation for a phenomenon is found, it will replace other explanations. This is why careful distinctions must be made between Frontier Science, Consensus Science, and Junk Science.
Many difficult controversies surround the environmental problems we face in the world today. Problems include: Air and water pollution, global warming, species and ecosystem biodiversity, energy, hazardous waste, population, and food supply issues. Politics control the financing of scientific research and development to help solve these issues. In politics passion wins over logic.
Science is not politics and cannot be debated in the same way politics are. Mixing politics with science produces bad science. Government efforts to fund research interfere with the maintenance of high scientific standards. The current Congress consists of 535 members. Of these members, 7 (1.3%), are scientists, and 21 others are healthcare professionals.

Questions
Do you feel that scientists should be cut out of the policy making process, particularly on environmental issues, when their research is proven and widely accepted and is being ignored and disputed? Politicians ultimately make the decisions, but shouldn’t the scientists have a voice?
Do you feel that lobbyists and special interest groups exert too great of an influence and act as an impediment to finding solutions to, and providing the funding for, research for the environmental problems we face?

Identify how the preventative care management approach promotes healthy living.

To plan, implement, and evaluate an effective program you must have a solid foundation in place to guide participants through all phases of the program. The purpose statement, goals, and objectives should give direction to your program and provide the groundwork for program evaluation.
Purpose Statement: Often referred to as a program overview, this is a short narrative that describes the intent of a program but also reflects the purpose behind it.
Example: The purpose of the community/population health program is to prove a wide variety of primary prevention strategies for residents in the priority population.
Program Goals: The program goals should be simple concise and should include two basic components: Who will be affected and what will change as a result of the program.
Example: To reduce the spread of HIV in New York.
Program Objectives: Objectives are more precise and represent smaller steps to ultimately help reach the program goal. Knowing how to construct objectives for a program is an important skill for a planner.
Example: Identify how the preventative care management approach promotes healthy living.
As you draft your purpose statement, goals, and objectives remember your priority population. Goals and objectives should be relevant and attainable for the population being served.
Your paper should be a minimum of two-pages long and include the following:
Select a priority population to serve
Examples: Rural or city populations; newly immigrated populations
Select a community/population health education program targeting prevalent public health issue (must be relevant to priority population)
Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease and Daily Exercise
Describe your priority population and health issue.
Develop a purpose statement for your health education program
Develop a program goal
Minimum of one program goal
Develop program objectives
Minimum of 3 objectives
Now using your critical thinking skills, answer the following:
Discuss why the health issue is a problem and the ramifications if the problem goes unresolved.
Discuss the methods and actions that the program intends to implement to help solve the health issue and why these methods will be effective.
Format your paper using APA style, including a title page and a reference page that contains the sources you used. For help with formatting your paper, visit the APA Guide.

Critique in detail 1 treatment for the diagnosis (Pharmacological or non-pharmacological), giving an evidence-based rationale for the treatment and highlighting any nursing care.

Applied Bioscience for Critical Conditions GMED3009

You are required to write your own case study on a patient who has sepsis. You can draw from clinical practicum experience and/or read widely on the topic and develop your own case study.

The case study should include/In the description of the patient the following: You can use the below as headings for your case study.

Section 1.

The purpose of this section is to provide the reader with a detailed overview of the patient. You will need to read broadly on the topic to accurately present the case study information.

1.Patient background (History prior to hospital admission) – What happened before hospital arrival.

2.Reason for admission – Signs and symptoms – Initial vital signs

3.Past medical/surgical history – What might be applicable to sepsis and why?

Please note that most of the information in the patient background, reason for admission and past medical/ surgical history sections will come from you. As such, only provide references where you want to justify or support your point.

4.Aetiology and brief pathophysiology – These should be consistent with the information provided in the reason for admission and past medical/surgical history sections.

5.Physical examination of the patient and expected findings based on the condition.

Only focus on areas that are related to sepsis. Many medical-surgical books or journal articles will provide areas to focus on when conducting a physical examination of a patient with a diagnosis of sepsis.

 It is also important to include physical examination techniques (e.g. inspection, palpation, etc.) in your writing.

Diagnostic tests (e.g. blood test, chest x-ray, etc.) are not part of the physical examination.

Section 2.

Students are then required to cover the following

1.Critique in detail 1 treatment for the diagnosis (Pharmacological or non-pharmacological), giving an evidence-based rationale for the treatment and highlighting any nursing care.

You will be required to clearly explain the mechanism of action, how the treatment impacts on outcomes of a patient with sepsis and specific nursing care to be considered (the nursing care should be related to the critiqued treatment).

If you choose to critique a pharmacological treatment, it is important that your critique should be based on one specific medication rather than a class/group of medications.

Your case study you must have:

Cover and contents page

References no more than 7 years old

Minimum of 8-10 references from journal articles and textbooks. The use of information and downloads from websites will not be accepted

Correct spelling and grammar

Strict APA style referencing

Length: 1500 words +/- 10%

Please make sure each section relates back to your case study when considering your answers.

Formatting

11 or 12 point readable font (e.g., Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial etc.)

1.5 line spacing throughout (including the reference list)

Include page numbers

Full sentences (no dot points unless the question asks you to list);

Contractions (where two words have been shortened into one e.g., doesn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t etc.) should not be used in academic writing;

Numbers under 10 should be in written format (e.g., ‘five’); numbers over 10 should be in numeric format (e.g., ‘20’).

All numbers (no matter how big) at the very beginning of a sentence should be in written format (e.g., “Thirty-five patients had a trauma.”)

E.g. and i.e. should only be used when in parentheses (AKA brackets). When outside parentheses use “For example,” for e.g. and “that is” for i.e.;

Always try and paraphrase from your source rather than quote as it demonstrates that you have understood the material

First-person (i.e. “I”, “we” etc.) should not be used for this assessment;

Australian spelling rather than US spelling (e.g., “behaviour” rather than “behavior”);

Careful proofreading of your paper and at least a spelling and grammar check before submission.

Discuss the ontological and epistemological beliefs that are associated with the paradigm that underpins your nursing story

Application Paper #1 GuidelinesPhilosophy provides the perspective on what is important to know, what is truth, and how knowledge is obtained. Think about your view of truth. Is there only one truth or are there multiple truths? This paper is a discussion about the choice of one philosophical underpinning (see below), and how it relates to the way we come to know in our nursing practice though the lens of a chosen aspect of your nursing story. This effort requires knowledge of the philosophical underpinnings of: positivism, post-positivism, critical theory, and constructivism. A discussion about the underpinning philosophy, what it means, and how it fits with a chosen aspect of your nursing story should ensue. The key elements of your paper are listed below

:Identify the underpinning philosophy that fits the way you nurse

Explain the relationship of that underpinning philosophy and the chosen aspect you want to highlight in your nursing story.

Discuss the ontological and epistemological beliefs that are associated with the paradigm that underpins your nursing story.

Identify which of the ways of knowing is most prominent in your nursing story. Justify your answer.
