Develop interview questions to gather information about the role of the provider in the community and the health issues faced by the chosen community.

Community Assessment and Analysis Presentation.

The RN to BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities.

Assessment/Interview.

Select a community of interest in your region. Perform a physical assessment of the community.

1). Perform a direct assessment of a community of interest using the “Functional Health Patterns Community Assessment Guide.”
2). Interview a community health and public health provider regarding that person’s role and experiences within the community.

Interview Guidelines.

a). Interviews can take place in-person, by phone, or by Skype.
b). Develop interview questions to gather information about the role of the provider in the community and the health issues faced by the chosen community.
c). Complete the “Provider Interview Acknowledgement Form” prior to conducting the interview. Submit this document separately in its respective drop box.

6). HIV
7). Ebola
8). Measles
9). Polio
10). Influenza

Epidemiology Paper Requirements;

1). Describe the chosen communicable disease, including causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment, and the demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
2). Describe the social determinants of health and explain how those factors contribute to the development of this disease.
3).Discuss the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. Are there any special considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or general population?
4). Explain the role of the community health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collection, data analysis, and follow-up) and why demographic data are necessary to the health of the community.
5). Identify at least one national agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease chosen and describe how the organizations contribute to resolving or reducing the impact of disease.
6). Discuss a global implication of the disease. How is this addressed in other countries or cultures? Is this disease endemic to a particular area? Provide an example.

Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups.

There is often the requirement to evaluate descriptive statistics for data within the organization or for health care information. Every year the National Cancer Institute collects and publishes data based on patient demographics. Understanding differences between the groups based upon the collected data often informs health care professionals towards research, treatment options, or patient education.

Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups. Refer to your textbook and the Topic Materials, as needed, for assistance in with creating Excel formulas.

Provide the following descriptive statistics:

Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, and Mode.
Measures of Variation: Variance, Standard Deviation, and Range (a formula is not needed for Range).
Once the data is calculated, provide a 150-250 word analysis of the descriptive statistics on the spreadsheet. This should include differences and health outcomes between groups.
APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Examine how clinical reasoning is used in your specialty area, and how advanced knowledge of physical assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacology can help improve your clinical reasoning skills.

Mountain climbers like Sir Edmund Hillary—the first person to scale Mt. Everest—are driven by a passion not everyone can understand. They persevere through brutal environments, dangerous conditions, and the risk of failure, merely for a chance to meet their objective: to reach the top.

That passion can fuel their desire and their objectives, but it should not drive their thinking and decision making. Failure to apply logical reasoning with each step can be a matter of life and death.

This week, you examine how clinical reasoning is used in your specialty area, and how advanced knowledge of physical assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacology can help improve your clinical reasoning skills. With an appreciation for the need to reason and think critically, you will further examine a case study of your choosing from your practicum experience and begin to determine the patient history and presentation as part of Part 1 of your Threaded Case Study. You also will submit your finalized Practicum Experience Plan.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Analyze advanced knowledge of clinical reasoning to area of specialty
  • Develop measurable individualized practicum learning objectives
  • Evaluate a clinical specialty as a means to advance knowledge and development
  • Develop a Practicum Experience Plan
  • Develop a timeline for the practicum experience
  • Evaluate practicum experiences related to advanced physical assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology
  • Analyze patient history and presentation related to a chosen case study*
  • Analyze pathophysiology of primary diagnosis*
  • Recommend a pharmacological approach to the primary diagnosis*
  • Recommend a nursing treatment plan for a chosen case study*
  • Recommend short- and long-term nursing treatment goals for a chosen case study*

Form a hypothesis. Think about a patient care incident that has occurred in the adult medical-surgical clinical setting: a situation, event, encounter or experience, which has elicited a feeling, emotion, relief, surprise, understanding or confirmation and describe it within the essential context of the incident.

New nurses are faced with making many decisions in meeting the needs of their patients. Nursing clinical judgment relates to the life experiences of the practicing nurse and is the end decision made when providing safe patient care (Tanner, 2006).  Recognizing patient cues, analyzing those cues, then developing a hypothesis, generating ideas, taking action and finally evaluating the outcome leads to clinical decision making in patient care (Dickison, Haerling, & Lasater, 2019). Evidence-based Practice (EBP) is consideration of clinical problems or questions while using clinical judgment and patient preferences. Integration of EBP happens when students search for evidence to support interventions as part of the rationales for patient care.

Assignment:

The student will write a critically appraised summary of the selected evidence-based nursing article using American Psychological Association (APA) format, professional writing skills and language, while relating the information to the clinical incident in a succinct and clear manner.

The critical reasoning and reflective thinking for the assignment involves three questions:

Form a hypothesis. Think about a patient care incident that has occurred in the adult medical-surgical clinical setting: a situation, event, encounter or experience, which has elicited a feeling, emotion, relief, surprise, understanding or confirmation and describe it within the essential context of the incident. This is something that you experience as a student while in the 195 or 205 Adult Med/Surg clinical patient care setting. Use your clinical instructor as a resource.

Refine the hypothesis. Why was this incident significant? Describe why this incident was significant enough to affect you or influenced your nursing care or practice.

Describe specific lessons learned from this incident and what would the student do differently if the incident repeated itself. This section requires the student to search for a nursing article (peer reviewed) that addresses the lesson learned or supports an alternative intervention or approach to the incident.

Understand the roles of the various metabolic pathways associated with the utilization of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Identify the positive and negative effects associated with the excess and lack of consumption of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

Identify the positive and negative effects associated with the excess and lack of consumption of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
Purpose The purpose of this case study is to help students put in practice the information discussed and learned in the second part of the course.

Task To successfully complete this assignment, the student must successfully answer all the questions associated with following case study. The answers must be backed up by quantitative data when available. Some online research will be required to complete this assignment.

The patient has changed his eating habits over the past 6 months. He started to control the amount of calories he consumed and kept it below 3000 kcal/day. He got a membership at the local gym, but due to his busy schedule he wasn’t been able to spend much time working out and expresses that he “maybe goes once a week”. Four weeks ago he started a “fad diet” to help him lose more weight. He is 26 years old now, his blood pressure is 125/76, he weighs 200lb, he is 5’9″ and his waist circumference is 40in. He recorded what he ate during the last 2 weeks and these are the results: 2700 kcal/day (total daily intake), 1000 kcal from lipids, 1200 kcal from protein and 500 kcal from carbohydrates. *show work for calculations for partial credit

List 2 positive things about his current diet and explain how you came to that conclusion. Provide quantitative data to support your conclusion.
What problem could he encounter due to the amount of carbohydrates he is consuming? Explain and Provide quantitative data to support your conclusion.
What negative effects could you expect based on the amount of protein he consumes? Explain and provide quantitative data to support your conclusion.
Do you think there have been changes in the way he metabolizes lipids since he started the diet? What kind of changes? Explain.
Which “fad diet” do you think he is currently on? Explain and provide quantitative data to support your conclusion.

PEER RESPONSE
Clara Barton.
The American Red Cross was founded on May 21, 1881, by Clara Barton. Clarissa Barton was born on Christmas Day in 1821 to Stephen and Sarah Barton (Burton, D. H., 1995). Clara became her brother’s nurse and companion after he was critically injured (Burton, D. H., 1995). Clara Barton was a teacher and a nurse (Spitzer, R., 2004).

The motivation that caused Clara to establish the American Red Cross was her dedication to pursuing service in the Civil War without the burden of having a husband and/or child (Burton, D. H., 1995). Clara wanted to volunteer for the sick and wounded soldiers of the Union Army during the Civil War and utilized her connections to collect medical supplies and food as well as arrange makeshift hospitals for the wounded (Burton, D. H., 1995). Barton documented personal information on soldiers she provided care for and eventually communicated with the family of soldiers that were missing, wounded, or dead (Glassford, S., 2013).

Barton’s lasting impact was that she founded the American Red Cross focusing on disaster relief and the National First Aid Association of America which prepared first aid kits and worked to help create ambulance brigades with local fire and police departments (Burton, D. H., 1995).

The work of Clara Barton changed current day healthcare due to her actions and belief in helping everyone regardless of race, gender, and economic status (Burton, D. H., 1995). She aided in the development of first aid response, emergency preparedness, and emergency response procedures that are still utilized by the American Red Cross today (Burton, D. H., 1995).
