How does the type of evidence (research design) of the two articles inform your area of practice? How might the type of evidence be valued within practice?

Each article is a piece of primary research that has used a different research method. You must use these two articles for this assignment.

Read these two articles thoroughly

You are required to:

  • Select one element of the research methods section from the two research papers identified above.

This element should be either: sampling; data collection tools   or    data analysis

  • Use contemporary research methods literature to appraise the selected element within the two research articles.
  • Deduce the validity, reliability and or credibility of the chosen element
  • Discuss and debate, within the hierarchy of evidence, the position the two articles hold and their usefulness to your area of practice.

See detailed assessment guidance below.

Introduction

An Introduction within an academic essay should inform the reader as to what is covered within the essay (refer to the course handbook assignment criteria to make sure you cover all elements)

Main body

  • Why is there a need for research and evidence to inform practice and why is having, an understanding of research methods and types of evidence important for nurses and midwives (see lecture notes, recommended texts and professional codes).
  • State which element of the methods you are looking at (sampling, or data collection tools or data analysis) and why it has been selected that element
  • State which issues (questions) within that element are going to be appraised. It is suggested you use the Moule (2018) Critical appraisal framework tool (which can be accessed from NURS 1547 Moodle or directly from Moule (2018) p160-162) to identify the specific question pertinent to the chosen element.

Appraise one element of the method you have chosen to analyze from the two articles given. This should be one of the following elements:

Sampling or data collection tools  or  data analysis.

Decide on one of the above elements, within that one element you need to appraise in the region of four/five issues that are part of that element (Critical appraisal tool). This can provide the structure for this part of your essay. You can identify these four/five issues by reading the research textbooks and/or looking at the questions in the relevant section of a critical appraisal tool (Moule 2018).

You should be presenting arguments to appraise the value or quality of the approach taken by the researcher’s by presenting arguments to show why the strategies used in that element of the method were used, the advantages and potential disadvantages of these strategies.

  • Following on from the previous paragraph, how may these strategies influence the validity, reliability, credibility of your chosen element (sampling or data collection tools or data analysis) of the study?

You could pose alternatives e.g. if they could have collected their data via questionnaires rather than interviews, but if you do this you will need to explain why you think that.

  • Familiarize yourself with the concept of Evidenced based Practice and the Hierarchy of Evidence – Can you critique the concept of a Hierarchy of Evidence? (HoE)

Nursing/Midwifery practice requires multiple ways of knowing – therefore what type(s) of evidence are the two articles given to you within this assignment – link to HoE (reference)

  • How does the type of evidence (research design) of the two articles inform your area of practice? How might the type of evidence be valued within practice?
  • Paraphrase the findings of both articles and briefly, how might the findings contribute to your area of practice?

Your arguments must be supported with contemporary research methods and evidence-based practice literature (see the reading list in the course handbook for examples).

Ensure you discuss both articles within each question from Moule (2018).

Please note in the main body you should discuss both articles together comparing and critiquing the aspect of the methodology of your choice.

  • Give definitions, and academic references for key concepts identified within the assessment criteria

Conclusion

The conclusion should bring together your main points discussed within the main body of the assignment. No new information should be in a conclusion.

Reference list

This should include the reference to the two articles given to you to use for the essay and all other research and evidence textbooks, articles, professional codes and critiquing tools you have used to support your arguments using the Harvard referencing system.

In addition to the requirement above please note this point as well

In working with the 2 articles as above you must do the following

  1. Is the design justified?
  2. Is it transparent and does the transparency bring worthiness?
  3. Talk about how rigorous the articles are, is the instrument reliable, accurate, and how is the consistency and do you get the same result.

Evaluate the leadership qualities and skills that will be most important to successfully implementing a strategic plan and sustaining strategic direction.

  • Develop a 5–10-year strategic plan for achieving specific health care quality and safety improvements, based on the analysis you completed in Assessment 1. Use either an AI approach or your SWOT analysis and a chosen strategic planning model.

Note: Each assessment in this course builds on the work you completed in the previous assessment. Therefore, you must complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Evaluation of strategic choices is important. The methods for selecting strategic alternatives help leaders organize significant issues to support decision making. However, it is important that the techniques do not make the decision. Rather, leaders should use the techniques to reveal the inherent situation and to organize their thought processes. This assessment provides you with an opportunity to evaluate and apply some of the techniques for successful strategy development and implementation.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Evaluate qualities and skills that promote effective leadership within health care organizations.
    • Evaluate the leadership qualities and skills that will be most important to successfully implementing a strategic plan and sustaining strategic direction.
  • Competency 2: Apply strategies to lead high-performing health care teams to meet organizational quality and safety goals.
    • Develop strategic goal statements and outcomes that support the achievement of specific quality and safety improvements for a care setting.
    • Justify the relevance of proposed strategic goals and outcomes in relation to the mission, vision, and values of a care setting.
  • Competency 3: Apply cultural, ethical, and regulatory considerations to leadership decision making.
    • Analyze the extent to which strategic goals and outcomes address the use of technology and the ethical, cultural, and regulatory environments.
  • Competency 4: Integrate leadership and health care theories into the role of the nurse leader.
    • Explain how relevant leadership and health care theories will be used to help achieve proposed strategic goals and objectives.
  • Competency 5: Communicate with stakeholders and constituencies to build collaborative partnerships and create inclusive work environments.
    • Communicate analyses clearly and in a way that demonstrates professionalism and respect for stakeholders and colleagues.
    • Integrate relevant and credible sources of evidence to support assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.

Questions to Consider

As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

Strategic planning models aid in setting goals, establishing time frames, and forging a path toward achieving those goals. Consider the strategic planning models you are familiar with:

  • Which model would you choose to create goals and outcomes that could address the area of concern you identified in your Assessment 1 SWOT analysis?
  • Why is this model the best choice among alternatives?
  • How does goal setting through appreciative inquiry provocative propositions differ from goal setting in the strategic planning model you selected?

·         Assessment Instructions

Note: You will use your care setting environmental analysis as the basis for developing your strategic plan in this assessment.

Preparation

The feedback you received on your care setting environmental analysis has been positive. Consequently, you have been asked to select one of the potential improvement projects you noted in your analysis and create a full, 5–10-year strategic plan to achieve the desired quality and safety improvement outcomes. You will develop your strategic plan, using either an AI approach (addressing the design stage), or by building on your SWOT analysis and applying a strategic planning model of your choice.

How you structure your plan should be based on whether you are taking an appreciative inquiry approach or using a specific strategic planning model. Regardless of the approach you choose, the requester of the plan has asked that you address the key points outlined below in the strategic plan requirements. In addition, your plan should be 5–8 pages in length.

Note: Remember, you can submit all, or a portion, of your draft plan to Smarthinking for feedback before you submit the final version for this assessment. However, be mindful of the turnaround time for receiving feedback, if you plan on using this free service.

Requirements

Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide, so at a minimum, be sure to address each point. In addition, you are encouraged to review the performance level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed.

Synopsis

What was the purpose of the study (research questions, purposes, and hypotheses)?

The purpose was to assess the relationship between the BMI of children and that of parents.

How was the sample obtained?

The sample was obtained through a random selection of students in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the country.

What inclusion or exclusion criteria were used?

The participants of the study had to be children and adolescents in elementary, middle, and high school. Considering that the study aimed to establish the relationship between the child and parental obesity, it was apparent that all of the children or adolescents had parents, either a mother or father.

Who from the sample actually participated or contributed data (demographic or clinical profile and dropout rate)?

From the sample of 25000 students, 23043 completed the study. 50.8 percent of these participants were boys while the rest were girls. More so, 73.4 percent of participants were from urban centers and the rest from rural areas.  88.3 percent of mothers who participated were housewives, while 44.38 of the fathers were either white-collar workers or laborers. Also, about 50 percent of the families owned personal computers and cars. The mean parental weight was 70.9-±13.8 kg, while that of children and adolescents was 42.50±17.0 kg. Finally, 9.4 percent of mothers and 17 percent of fathers had university degrees.

What methods were used to collect data (e.g., sequence, timing, types of data, and measures)?

Measurements were used in the collection of data on the participants. The weight of both parents and their children was measured.

Was an intervention tested?                                             Yes  ü No

  1. How was the sample size determined?

To determine the sample size, the researchers developed 48 clusters including 10 students from each province of the country.

  1. Were patients randomly assigned to treatment groups?

Selection of participants was done through cluster random sampling.

What are the main findings?

Obese parents were at a higher risk of having obese children than their normal-weight counterparts.

Comments

This study provides significant insight into the role played by parental obesity in child and adolescent obesity. The research showed that the weight status of parents is a significant predictor of obesity and overweight among adolescents and children. This study links shared family dietary habits as a contributor to the childhood obesity crisis in different parts of the world. For clinical practice and application, this study emphasizes the urgency for implementing family-centered preventive programs as opposed to the current programs that focus on treatment. Overall, the study is of excellent quality, considering the methodology and use of experts to conduct the sampling and data collection through measurements of BMI. More so, the sample size and countrywide coverage, including rural and urban centers, confirm the generalizability of the study results. However, while the authors state that the self-reports on parental BMI are reliable, I think this aspect, to some extent, reduces the accuracy of the data due to the stigma associated with obesity.
