How was your own personal experience with play and learning when you were young? Did you go to kindergarten? And what are your thoughts on the play as a way of growth and development?

ASSIGNMENT

When you think of “kindergarten” do you think of it as a garden of children? In 1837 German educator Friedrich Froebel developed and tested new educational methods and philosophies based on the structure, activity, and learning of young children. In 1840 he founded a Play and Activity Institute which he later named Kindergarten reflecting his belief that young children should be nurtured and nourished “Like plants in a garden”. In Froebel’s findings, he claimed that Kindergarten has 3 essential parts; 1) Creative play, which he called gifts and occupations 2) Singing and dancing for healthy activity, and 3) Observing and nurturing plants in a garden for stimulating awareness of the natural world. Frobel’s garden for children is the landmark of where the word kindergarten originated. Frobel believed that children learn best through play and felt that children should be children. The importance of play, interactive and personalized learning, the importance of all things natural, nurturing a child’s creative talents, and allowing children to take risks are all part of the rich and warming learning experience that is a Froebelian nursery. (Bruce, 2012)

To prepare for this Journal, watch the two videos below. Then write a reflection based on some of these guiding questions

  • Looking at today’s kindergarten classroom, do you see any similarities to the days of Froebel’s kindergarten? What might a difference be?
  • Do you think if Froebel, the “Father of Kindergarten”, were alive, he would be disappointed or happy about how children learn today?
  • How was your own personal experience with play and learning when you were young? Did you go to kindergarten? And what are your thoughts on the play as a way of growth and development?

Discuss one thing from each of the videos that support the concept that we need to focus on the family as a unit instead of focusing on the child in isolation.

DISCUSSION ESSAY

In this discussion, we focus on T. Berry Brazelton, who was, until his death in 2018 at the age of 99, a towering figure in pediatrics and child development whose significant contribution was to our understanding and appreciation of newborns. In 1973, he developed the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS), which is still widely used today. As stated on the website of the Brazelton Institute of the Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Brazelton “…was a leading force behind the pediatric healthcare revolution that opened doors to parents and empowered them to become active participants in their children’s care.” (2022)

To prepare for this discussion, watch the two videos below. In the first video, Dr. Brazelton demonstrated Neonatal Assessment. The second video is an interview with Dr. Brazeton from 2017 when he shares children’s basic needs.

For your initial response:

  • Discuss one thing from each of the videos that support the concept that we need to focus on the family as a unit instead of focusing on the child in isolation.
  • Describe a new concept to you and tell how you might be able to share that information or utilize it in your work with children.

Why is it beneficial for early childhood educators to be familiar with Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky and their theories? Why is it essential for early childhood educators to understand that children learn best through play?

 Journal entry

Before starting your Journal for Unit 1, you need to read the assignment document and also familiarize yourself with Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky and learn a bit about their theories. While the theorists differed on a number of things they shared a belief about the importance of play.

For this first Journal entry, you need to read and review the material provided below and then write your reflection based on these guiding questions:

1) Why is it beneficial for early childhood educators to be familiar with Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky and their theories?

2) Why is it essential for early childhood educators to understand that children learn best through play?

3) What is an example of how you could use your knowledge of the importance of play in your work with young children?

Review your graphic organizer. What was the most important piece of information in the story, and on which day was this information first reported? Which media outlet covered this development first?

Assignment Summary

For this assignment, you will use a graphic organizer to monitor and analyze multiple global news outlets across a period of time. Once you have completed your organizer, you will answer key questions about the media’s coverage of a story and how this coverage changed and developed over time.

Background Information

In today’s world, global media outlets such as websites, newspapers, and magazines give their readers up-to-the-minute coverage of breaking news and events from across the globe.

In the 24-hour news cycle, stories are constantly unfolding with the addition of new information and perspectives. As situations develop, reporters work to keep their audience informed, and readers synthesize new information with what they already know about a news event.

Materials

  • Graphic organizer
  • Access to three global media outlets
  • Follow-up questionnaire

Assignment Instructions

For this assignment, you are expected to submit two things:

  1. A completed graphic organizer
  2. A completed follow-up questionnaire

Step 1: Prepare for the assignment.

  1. Read through the guide before you begin so you know the expectations for this assignment.
  2. If anything is not clear to you, ask your teacher for assistance.

Step 2: Select three global media outlets.

  1. Choose media outlets that provide daily coverage. Monthly periodicals and journals are not a good choice for this assignment, but many weekly news magazines also have websites that provide more frequent reporting.
  • Some examples of reliable global news outlets include the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, the Associated Press, and Reuters. Discuss your sources with your teacher if you have questions.
  1. If you do not have daily access to the internet, discuss alternatives with your teacher.

Step 3:
Begin monitoring coverage of one or two news events.

  1. Use your graphic organizer to keep track of a news story as it unfolds across a period of time. Choose a story that is likely to have continuous coverage. For example, a breaking news item will probably have follow-up stories over the next week, while an in-depth profile of a writer or artist will probably not be updated.
  2. Consider how the story evolves depending on the handling of new events, information, and perspectives in news articles. Consider how media outlets report the effects of the news story, and note how the sources present opinions on the story in the form of editorials and op-ed pieces.
  3. In addition to the notes you take in your graphic organizer, keep track of the titles, authors, and URLs of articles you read as the story develops.

Step 4: After a week, review your graphic organizer to analyze the evolution of the news story

  1. Consider what trends and patterns you noticed, and what factors most influenced the coverage of the story.
  2. Using complete sentences, answer the questions on your follow-up questionnaire.

Step 5: Evaluate your assignment using this checklist.

If you can check each box below, you are ready to submit your assignment.

Yes No Evaluation Question
Is your name on your graphic organizer and questionnaire?
Did your organizer trace the development of one or more news stories across a period of time?
Did you monitor the coverage from at least three different sources?
Are your sources likely to be considered fair and reliable by a majority of people?
Are your sources likely to provide corrections and updates in the event of misreporting?
    Are your sources unbiased?
Did you keep track of how the news story developed over time?
Did you note new and relevant information as it was reported?
Did you use complete sentences in your follow-up questionnaire?

Step 6: Revise and submit your presentation.

  1. If you were unable to check off all of the requirements on the checklist, go back and make sure that your assignment is complete. Save your assignment before submitting it.
  2. Turn in your graphic organizer and questionnaire to your teacher. Be sure that your name is on them.
  3. Submit your graphic organizer and questionnaire through the Virtual Classroom.
  4. Congratulations! You have completed your assignment.
