Comparative, fictional interview transcript

This paper asks you to compare and contrast the experiences of two individuals from different countries involved in one part of the Pacific War: Japan, Korea, China, or the United States. To do so, you will craft a fictional interview transcript as the midterm assignment.

Create the biographies of the interviewees. To do this effectively, you will need to mine the primary sources that we have looked at in this class fairly extensively in order to craft a composite history of two particular individuals, understand their backgrounds, and consider how and in what circumstances they participated in the war.

However, this background and history will only be revealed in the answers that you have each character give to the questions that you present them. As a fictional transcript, the idea is not to copy information from the books, but instead to synthesize material from multiple sources in order to create as rich a pair of composite figures as you can. Consider similarities and differences in background of participants from various countries. As such, you will need to cite at least three (3) different primary sources for each individual for a minimum total of six primary sources. A single interview or document counts as a single primary source.

  • Primary sources for Japan: .pdf files and Japan at War
  • Primary sources for China: .pdf files; block quotes and “readings” in Lary, The Chinese People at War
  • Primary sources for Korea: Under the Black Umbrella, some in Japan at War
  • Primary sources for the United States: Terkel, “The Good War”; .pdf files

Provide a brief overview of hard and soft water as well as the two most common water softening methods (lime softening and ion exchange softening). The following information should be provided:

  • What is hard water, how does it form, and what does it do?
  • What is soft water?
  • For each method of water softening, how is the process accomplished?
  • In general, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each method of water softening?
  • Would you be able to recommend a specific method based on your research?

Write out a plan for how you would conduct career counseling sessions with Danielle. Identify which Career Theory you are relying on in establishing your plan and how you will incorporate various aspects of the information in the scenario toward helping your client.

Career Theory

Danielle is a 36-year-old African American female who has lived in cities all of her life. She grew up in Detroit. Then when she finished high school, she moved to Georgia to attend college. Then, when she finished her undergraduate degree, she moved to Houston for graduate school. After completing her MA, she took a job e in Dallas, where she lived for 10 years before moving to San Antonio, Texas.

She entered career counseling because she needed help in identifying a viable career option. She has been unemployed for the past year. Danielle possesses a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in landscape architecture. During her intake interview, Danielle reported feeling dissatisfied with her previous job. Most recently, she had been employed as a landscape architect and reported enjoying the creative aspects of her work. She also mentioned, however, that she had experienced difficulty in getting along with her supervisor and that was a pattern for her in her previous employment situations. She also reported a strong dislike for structured work environments. She related that she experienced a high level of anxiety when confronted with challenging tasks. Danielle also noted that she was typically very sensitive to criticism. Her hobbies included photography, computer-aided design work, and reading in the areas of human potential, spirituality, and psychology.

An additional factor concerning Dannielle’s situation at the time she entered career counseling was that she and her husband were in the process of divorcing. The divorce proceedings were focused on the issues of child support and custody relative to Danielle’s 6-year-old son.

Danielle’s father was employed as an engineer and her mother was a clinical psychologist (both retired). Danielle has a 28-year-old sister currently working as a homemaker. At the time she entered counseling, Danielle’s parents were serving as her sole source of financial support. Despite this financial assistance, Danielle stated that she felt that she never receive from her parents “what she needed.” She perceives her parents as being somewhat distant and her father as being somewhat critical. Her father was especially not supportive of Danielle’s artistic abilities and emphasized the importance of developing scientific skills and knowledge. Both parents were anxious for her to return to work.

She has taken the Strong Interest Inventory and reports her RIASEC code as ARC and her Myers-Briggs Type Indicator preference code as INFJ.

In the essay, choose 1-3 topics that the philosopher focuses on. Spend time reading the text and find examples of how the philosopher discusses the topic(s). Using the reading questions from the syllabus as guides, write how the philosopher understands that topic.

Research for Self-Care

We do possess two lists of spiritual exercises. They do not completely overlap, but they do have the merit of giving us a fairly complete panorama of Stoico-Platonic inspired philosophical therapeutics. One of these lists enumerates the following elements: research (zetesis), thorough investigation (skepsis), reading (anagnosis), listening (akroasis), attention (prosoche), self-mastery (enkrateia), and indifference to indifferent things. The other names successively: reading, meditations (meleta), therapies of the passions, remembrance of good things, self-mastery (enkrateia), and the accomplishment of duties. With the help of these lists, we shall be able to give a brief description of Stoic spiritual exercises (Hadot, Philosophy as a Way of Life, p. 84).
This exercise will ask that you do some research, reading, and writing with one philosopher from our work together.
Choose one philosopher we have studied and read beyond what has been offered in our PDFs. You can purchase such works as The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday, or any of Holiday’s other books, or feel free to purchase a book by Alain de Botton or The School of Life. If you would like more suggestions, please feel free to reach out! Many of the ancient texts are available with a simple Google search. Such titles include but are not limited to, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Gregory Hays translation), The Art of Living by Epictetus, and Enchiridion by Epictetus. I will provide options in the “Files” section on Canvas as well.

In the essay, choose 1-3 topics that the philosopher focuses on. Spend time reading the text and find examples of how the philosopher discusses the topic(s). Using the reading questions from the syllabus as guides, write how the philosopher understands that topic.

Some examples might include an essay discussing Marcus Aurelius’ ideas on the importance of focusing on what you can control, his thoughts on serving the human community, or his writing about the nature of time. Find where in Meditations he discusses these things and establishes how his ideas might be helpful in developing your own philosophy as the art of living. The aim of this exercise is to deepen your understanding of a philosopher’s work that has resonated with you this summer on topics of your interest.

Respond to this in size 12, Times New Roman font in 3-4 double-spaced pages. Also, be sure to use direct textual evidence from the source of your choice.

Note: Be sure to elaborate on your thinking enough to exceed 3 pages. Please do not include extra spaces to reach this requirement. It is important that you spend time and attention on these ideas. Although the length of the paper is not the most important aspect, it does work to demonstrate the time and attention offered to the task.

Watch and evaluate a movie related to aging. Explain the concepts and then show how they apply to the movie.

Movie evaluation

Watch and evaluate a movie related to aging. You may watch the movie of your choice and then write a 3-4 page paper. The paper should include a short synopsis of the movie and clear links between the movie’s content and class materials, such as stereotypes, physical health, Alzheimer’s Disease, etc. Through your analysis of the movie, you should show me that you have a clear understanding of the course concepts you are discussing. Explain the concepts and then show how they apply to the movie. Simply labeling things without explaining them will not earn you full credit.
