A. Artist Within the Art World: In Response to his Personal Life Experiences and Environment

Kehinde Wiley

American artist, Kehinde Wiley, is a painter whose work utilizes the visual language related to 17th-19th Century Eurocentric Academic painting traditions (the Baroque, Rococo, and Romanticism among them) to explore the contemporary Black experience related to each of his subject’s personal style (particularly their clothing). In this video, Wiley discusses his background, work, process, philosophy, and art historical influences.

Please watch this 14 minute video about Kehinde Wiley’s background, work, process, philosophy, and art historical influences.

B. Artist as Educator:

Charles White

Keeping in mind that all artists are storytellers, please watch the video Life Model: Charles White and His Students, about Charles White who was an artist and educator at OTIS College of Art and Design in the late 20th century. As students, you are all part of an institutional establishment, but each individual within any establishment has the potential to create change from within.

As you watch the video, pay attention to how Charles White interacted with his students, who he felt art was for, and how he viewed the potential for a diversity of artists to carve out their own places in the predominantly caucasian Eurocentric art establishment. Consider how a single individual can impact a larger community through their own work.

C. Artist Outside a Gallery(s):

JR http://www.jr-art.net

Using massive scale photography of the everyday underrepresented segment of society, JR’s work addresses poverty, politics and gender. Bringing social awareness to the public, JR’s work predominantly exists in the public space.

Prompt Guidelines: Written Analysis – Post Essay Format (Due Wednesday):

Your analysis of these three artists should be evaluated in an essay format. Please refer to the Discussion Guidelines for more information.

Part 1: Answer all of the following general questions for each of the three artists:

  1. Who is the audience for the for each of these individuals, everyone or a select few? Explain your answer.
  2. How does/did the work of each artist relate to the issues covered in the chapter? Does their work address social justice or question the status quo? How so? Can you relate to their life experiences? If not, why do you think that is? Explain your answers.
  3. Artists are all storytellers in one way or another, how did you respond to hearing the personal stories revolving around each of these artist’s lives?
  4. What role do our own experiences play in the “life” of the artist’s artworks and careers? What I mean by that is, we all come to things from different places in life, so our reactions to everything are personal in some small way. Artists make work and release it into the world, after that the reactions to their work are constantly in flux. Feel free to share examples from personal experience(s) to help explain your answer.

Part 2: Now that you’ve learned about these artists, chose the one artist, from these videos, whose work resonated with you the most personally. Find a specific artwork (and embed it in the discussion) that you feel best represents this message. Include the artist, title, size, and location (if it’s a visual artwork).

Address the following in your essay:

  1. Artwork embedded, artist, title, size, location.
  2. What is the message/goal of the art? Be specific.
  3. How effectively does the artwork communicate it message? Provide specific examples in you answer. Does the range (the number of viewers) of audience affect this?
  4. Do you think the artist’s success in the artwork is directly related to the size of the audience that see it, since it is about protest? Be specific.

When using linear regression, what would you expect the scatterplot to look like? Explain the difference between response and predictor variables in a linear regression to justify the selection of variables.

Project 1

Competencies

In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:

  • Apply statistical techniques to address research problems
  • Perform regression analysis to address an authentic problem

Overview

The purpose of this project is to have you complete all of the steps of a real-world linear regression research project starting with developing a research question, then completing a comprehensive statistical analysis, and ending with summarizing your research conclusions.

Scenario

You have been hired by the D. M. Pan National Real Estate Company to develop a model to predict housing prices for homes sold in 2019. The CEO of D. M. Pan wants to use this information to help their real estate agents better determine the use of square footage as a benchmark for listing prices on homes. Your task is to provide a report predicting the housing prices based square footage. To complete this task, use the provided real estate data set for all U.S. home sales as well as national descriptive statistics and graphs provided.

Directions

Using the Project One Template located in the What to Submit section, generate a report including your tables and graphs to determine if the square footage of a house is a good indicator for what the listing price should be. Reference the National Statistics and Graphs document for national comparisons and the Real Estate Data Spreadsheet spreadsheet (both found in the Supporting Materials section) for your statistical analysis.

Note: Present your data in a clearly labeled table and using clearly labeled graphs.

Specifically, include the following in your report:

Introduction

  1. Describe the report: Give a brief description of the purpose of your report.
    1. Define the question your report is trying to answer.
    2. Explain when using linear regression is most appropriate.
      1. When using linear regression, what would you expect the scatterplot to look like?
    3. Explain the difference between response and predictor variables in a linear regression to justify the selection of variables.

Data Collection

  1. Sampling the data: Select a random sample of 50 houses.
    1. Identify your response and predictor variables.
  2. Scatterplot: Create a scatterplot of your response and predictor variables to ensure they are appropriate for developing a linear model.

Data Analysis

  1. Histogram: For your two variables, create histograms.
  2. Summary statistics: For your two variables, create a table to show the mean, median, and standard deviation.
  3. Interpret the graphs and statistics:
    1. Based on your graphs and sample statistics, interpret the center, spread, shape, and any unusual characteristic (outliers, gaps, etc.) for the two variables.
    2. Compare and contrast the shape, center, spread, and any unusual characteristic for your sample of house sales with the national population. Is your sample representative of national housing market sales?

Develop Your Regression Model

  1. Scatterplot: Provide a graph of the scatterplot of the data with a line of best fit.
    1. Explain if a regression model is appropriate to develop based on your scatterplot.
  2. Discuss associations: Based on the scatterplot, discuss the association (direction, strength, form) in the context of your model.
    1. Identify any possible outliers or influential points and discuss their effect on the correlation.
    2. Discuss keeping or removing outlier data points and what impact your decision would have on your model.
  1. Find r: Find the correlation coefficient (r).
    1. Explain how the r value you calculated supports what you noticed in your scatterplot.

Determine the Line of Best Fit. Clearly define your variables. Find and interpret the regression equation. Assess the strength of the model.

  1. Regression equation: Write the regression equation (i.e., line of best fit) and clearly define your variables.
  2. Interpret regression equation: Interpret the slope and intercept in context.
  3. Strength of the equation: Provide and interpret R-squared.
    1. Determine the strength of the linear regression equation you developed.
  4. Use regression equation to make predictions: Use your regression equation to predict how much you should list your home for based on the square footage of your home.

Conclusions

  1. Summarize findings: In one paragraph, summarize your findings in clear and concise plain language for the CEO to understand. Summarize your results.
    1. Did you see the results you expected, or was anything different from your expectations or experiences?
      1. What changes could support different results, or help to solve a different problem?
      2. Provide at least one question that would be interesting for follow-up research.

You can use the following tutorial that is specifically about this assignment. Make sure to check the assignment prompt for specific numbers used for national statistics. The videos may use different national statistics. You should use the national statistics posted with this assignment.

Explain why “turning off” access controls is not an acceptable solution to remote access to internal networks and resources.

CMIT 425 Week 5 Discussion

Your task: You have been asked to give a presentation at an online training session for employees who are now working from home. The subject of this training session is: Access Controls and Why They Matter.

Background: Access controls are security features that are usually considered the first line of defense in asset protection. They are used to dictate how subjects access objects, and their main goal is to protect the objects from unauthorized access. Access control models are frameworks that use access controls to enforce the rules and objectives of the model (e.g. MAC, DAC, RBAC).

For this training, you should focus on the need to use Access Controls to protect corporate assets and data which are accessible via equipment and networks within the Work From Home setting. In your talking points you should also consider and address the frustrations that employees may feel when they encounter access controls that are not set up to allow the same type of “inside” access as employees had when working on company equipment inside company networks. (Explain why “turning off” access controls is not an acceptable solution to remote access to internal networks and resources.) Finally, address some potential “insider threats” which may exist in the Work From Home environment that need the countermeasures provided by access controls. Such threats could include the actions of others residing in the home who have access to the employee’s laptops or who use the same networks and network connections.

Format: This week, the format for your deliverable (posting) will be “Talking Points.” Talking points are presented in outline format and contain the content that you would put on slides in a slide deck. Your outline should include 5 to 7 major points (“slide titles”) followed by 3 to 5 supporting points for each. Remember to put enough information into the talking points that your peer reviewers can understand what you intend to cover in each section of your briefing. Remember to introduce the topic at the beginning, present your analysis, and then close your briefing with an appropriate summary. Include a list of sources (3 or more) which attendees could refer to if they wish to fact check your work.

In your critiques for your peers (2 different students), focus on providing suggestions for strengthening the talking points (added content, refocused content, etc.) Grammar, punctuation, and other writing mechanics will be addressed by your instructor and should not be part of your critique.

Discuss the trade dispute of GMOs between the United States and Europe. Develop the argument through a constructivist framework that accounts for the power and influence of the US and EU through the trade dispute of GMOs.

The Transatlantic dispute of GMO’s: Conceptualising the notion of power and influence within a constructivist framework

Discipline: International relations

The first draft of the essay aims to discuss the trade dispute of GMOs between the United States and Europe. It should develop the argument through a constructivist framework that accounts for the power and influence of the US and EU through the trade dispute of GMOs.

My current research includes a focus on:

– Cultural/social regulatory framework
– Cooperation/possibility of a trade war
– the power and influence of the World Trade Organisation’s involvement

Lecturer’s feedback suggestion: Needs to be more concise with the theory of constructivism (narrow it down to a specific reading or type of constructivism since constructivism is a broad meta theory) and link my points throughout the essay to that theory. As of yet, it lacks specificity in terms of the constructivist lens and also needs to properly address the power and influence.

Some suggestions for the rewrite based on the research I have done so far is to make the essay focus on the my final argument being – a cultural constructivist lens proves that the power and influence of the US and EU during the transatlantic dispute meant the US lost their position as hegemonic power.
