Lego building

Prompt : Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

– Lego building as simple as this sounds its one of the small thing that I’m grateful for in my life, stressed ,sad or need a time to catchup with myself building lego blocks is my passion. I get so absorbed that I totally forget about time itself. The art of starting from the bottom to details that could be inside of a structure although many cannot see I know is inside, which remind me of the growth of a person sometimes blocks can be misplaced but with time and realization you’ll put it in a right place, like wise the the blocks could easily break but could also be built it up. (Focus on my passion for this hobby but at the very end relate it to a person)
– Another thing is putting on makeup which is my hobby, I find it as away of expressing myself, from extravagant looks to bold colors it gives me the freedom to do what I want. There’s no limits no boundaries to creation and freedom. (Focus on how it gives me the freedom, with no limit to expressing myself)

Motivation and behavior

The University of Miami’s official mascot is the ibis. Folklore maintains that the native marsh bird is the last to take shelter before a hurricane hits and the first to emerge once the storm passes, making it an apt symbol of courage and resilience.

Considering your ability to control your own motivation and behavior, how have past experiences helped build your courage and resilience to persist in the face of academic and life challenges so that, once these storms pass, you can emerge in continued pursuit of your goals? (250)

What contributions can they, personally, make to their communities—and how can a UT education help them do that? What, specifically, about UT Austin did the student connect with, in terms of how it would help them contribute to the greater good?

Short Answer Prompt

The core purpose of The University of Texas at Austin is, “To Transform Lives for the Benefit of Society.” Please share how you believe your experience at UT Austin will prepare you to “Change the World” after you graduate. (300 Words)

HOW TO APPROACH THIS QUESTION

This question offers applicants the chance to tell the committee how studying at UT Austin will help them impact the world for the better. A student’s impact could take the form of a chosen career, service/volunteer work, advocacy, leadership, or other creative or intellectual endeavors.

The key here is to combine two elements:

The student’s reflections on how they want to impact the world (including the lives of others) for the better.

The student’s considerations of how their experiences at UT might enable them to do so.

Particularly when it comes to talking about future opportunities at UT, students should be specific,
demonstrating their knowledge of the university and the possibilities it will afford them to use their education for social good.

If students have done any brainstorming for short answer 2, they’ve already spent a fair amount of time thinking about the role they play in the various communities or groups they belong to. Now they need to think about why they’ve chosen to be involved in those activities. What core values have guided these choices, and in looking to the future, how do those values inform the impact students hope to have on their community—and even the world?

PERSONALIZING THE ANSWER

As students think about how to make their answer to this question stand out, they should keep in mind that certain kinds of social contributions—such as helping underprivileged children or working to end world hunger—may strike the admissions committee as somewhat generic. They’re incredible endeavors, yes, but the goal here is to stand out from other applicants who have similar lofty goals.

For this reason, students should think about how they can frame their potential contributions to society in a way that distinguishes them from the thousands of other students who also want to have a positive impact. Here are some questions to consider:

How has their past experience put them in a position to realize their positive values, in the UT community and beyond?

What contributions can they, personally, make to their communities—and how can a UT education help them do that?

What, specifically, about UT Austin did the student connect with, in terms of how it would help them contribute to the greater good?

Discuss what your found interesting or uninteresting, flaws in the reasoning of the papers, your assessment of the conclusions drawn and whether the data support the theory, issues that the author did not consider, synthesis of opposing viewpoints presented across several papers, an idea for future research, etc.

Article reflections

This paper (~2 pages double spaced) should analyze and critique the week’s reading assignments. Being able to critically review research is an important aspect of scientific enterprise. In addition, article reflections ideally facilitate appreciation for how empirical research is conducted and encourage careful consideration of how theory informs methods of data collection and analysis. You should include at most a few sentences summarizing the readings, followed by your critique or analysis of the readings. You could discuss what your found interesting or uninteresting, flaws in the reasoning of the papers, your assessment of the conclusions drawn and whether the data support the theory, issues that the author did not consider, synthesis of opposing viewpoints presented across several papers, an idea for future research, etc. The ideas expressed in your article reflection should be clear and concise, but please do not write a simple summary of the readings.

Because some students may specialize in different disciplines, they may want to “spin” the week’s themes in a reasonable fashion toward their interests, which is fine. The goal is to make sure that students not only complete the readings, but also put some degree of thought into the implications of, and interconnections among the readings and after our discussion of the topic that week. The article reflection should span across all the readings of the week. A reflection of only one of the articles will not receive a passing grade.
