Do you see any resemblances between modern day American false confessions and Tituba’s? As you consider that question, think carefully about evidence. What is special about what we say about ourselves — our first-person accounts — as a matter of evidence?

Guiding questions:

  • Summarize the article about false confessions for your classmates. On its basis, tell us: How can it be that people falsely confess — when there are dire consequences — rather than telling the truth?
  • Do you see any resemblances between modern day American false confessions and Tituba’s?
  • As you consider that question, think carefully about evidence. What is special about what we say about ourselves — our first-person accounts — as a matter of evidence?
  •  When we lie in our first-person accounts, do we lie to ourselves, as well? Do we deserve what we get?

Why does the author of our textbook think “civility” is complicated? Why do the 2 common conceptions of civility make it so difficult to navigate ethics and communication in 2022?

Exam 1

Answer each of these 2 questions in the form of a 1-2 page essay. Both essays should be included in a single document and placed in the “Exam 1″ dropbox. .”

  1. The year is 2025 and after several successful years in college, where you earned various degrees, you have hit the ground running in the career of your choice. The city of Rockford has taken notice and asked you to come back home for a talk. You are to give a 30-45 minute speech about your experiences and what you learned about perseverance, hard work, and the importance of being people-focused. People of all age ranges will be in the audience to hear your speech at the BMO Harris Bank Center, 3 days before Thanksgiving. What terms will help you most in giving the kind of talk you are hoping to deliver in front of family, friends, and former classmates? Use 5 terms from any of the chapters we’ve read (Chapters 1-4 and 5, 10, and 11). Talk about how those 5 terms will help you do your best job instead of writing the actual speech. There is no need to do that.
  2. Some fellow citizens believe that 2020 and 2021 were 2 of the most divisive years in American history and the January 6th, 2021 riots at the Capitol show much of the same. In this moment of uncertainty, college students (like all of you are searching for answers. More importantly, the future is in your hands. Human beings have free will or agency. In other words, we make choices instead of the world “happening to us.” As you talk about issues of ethics and communication in your own life, how can we improve things?

Why does the author of our textbook think “civility” (Chapter 2) is complicated? Why do the 2 common conceptions of civility make it so difficult to navigate ethics and communication in 2022? Use 5 terms from any of the chapters we’ve read (Chapters 1-4 and 5, 10, and 11).

Conduct a hypothesis test for each sample at the .01 level of significance and determine what action, if any, should be taken. Provide the test statistic and p-value for each test. Discuss the implications of changing the level of significance to a larger value. What mistakes or error could increase if the level of significance in increased?

Quality Associates

Quality Associates, Inc., a consulting firm, advises its clients about sampling and statistical procedures that can be used to control their manufacturing processes. In one particular application, a client game quality associates a sample of 800 observations taken during a time in which that client’s process was operating satisfactorily. The sample standard deviation for these data was .21; hence, with so much data, the population standard deviation was assumed to be .21. Quality associates then suggested that random samples of size 30 be taken periodically to monitor the process on an ongoing basis. By analyzing the new samples, the client could quickly learn whether the process was operating satisfactorily. When the process was not operating satisfactorily, corrective action could be taken to eliminate the problem. The design specification indicated the mean for the process should be 12. The hypothesis test suggested Quality Associates follows.

  • H0: μ=12
  • H1: μ≠12

Corrective action will be take any time H0 is rejected.

Four samples were collected at hourly intervals during the first day of operation of the new statistical process control procedure. The data are available in the data set Quality.xls.

Managerial Report:

  1. Conduct a hypothesis test for each sample at the .01 level of significance and determine what action, if any, should be taken. Provide the test statistic and p-value for each test.
  1. Compute the standard deviation for each of the four samples. Does the assumption of .21 for the population standard deviation appear reasonable?
  1. Compute limits for the sample mean X around μ=12 such that, as long as a new sample mean is within those limits, the process will be considered to be operating satisfactorily. If X exceeds the upper limit or if X is below the lower limit, corrective action will be taken. These limits are referred to as upper and lower control limits for quality control purposes.
  1. Discuss the implications of changing the level of significance to a larger value. What mistakes or error could increase if the level of significance in increased?

What behaviors are considered ethical, and what are not? How do we know what is true? What does this person think is necessary for a person to be good? What part does education play in forming ethical people?

First, focus on Ancient Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian and compare them (find similarities and differences). These artifacts should come from class notes. Think about values, religious beliefs, myths, practices, environmental (geographical) factors, and societal structures that shaped these cultures and influenced them. Make sure to answer the question: How were their cultural artifacts affected by the issues that they faced? For example, how did power structures influence their artworks (literature and/or visual art), or how did their religious beliefs shape their artworks (literature and/or visual art)?

Second, address the ways in which Aristotle defined a good or just society and/or a good person. Some questions to consider: What behaviors are considered ethical, and what are not? How do we know what is true? What does this person think is necessary for a person to be good? What part does education play in forming ethical people? What does this person think is necessary for a society to be good? How might this person think about our contemporary American culture?

Third, focus on your own values and address them. Some questions to consider: Do you agree with the ideas of the person you wrote about in the second part of the paper? Why or why not? What do you think makes a good or just society? What do you think makes a good person? Does a good society make a good person or vice-versa? What happens when individuals are not socially responsible? You should consider how social issues affect us, think about the causes of societal collapse, and consider what the future problems for humanity might be. In doing this final part, you should choose at least one cause of societal collapse that you think we should be most concerned about avoiding and what we might do to avert societal collapse.

Summary – Summarize in paragraph form the facts and issues presented in the article. Document the source of your information with a parenthetical reference, i.e. (Sanger and Broad, 2019, para. 4).

Application – Apply three or more concepts from the assigned chapter to the main ideas in the news article. Specifically explain how the material in your textbook is illustrated in the article you are examining. This can be accomplished by using examples from the article and terms or concepts found in the textbook. You must clearly define the concepts and provide in-text citations in the APA format, including page or section/paragraph numbers, i.e. (Krutz, 2019, p. 15) or (Krutz, 2019, para. 12) for our textbook.

Analysis – Conclude with an analysis and reflection of the issue that includes reasoning related to concepts within POS 2041 an analysis of the article perspective. Does the article present the issue in a way that influences as well as informs. Lastly, include your own observations of the issue, the actions of those involved or an anticipated outcome related to your understanding of the concepts covered within the course.
