Course Project: Creating an Interactive Exploratory Dashboard

Background Information

Dashboard design principles and techniques will be covered in Lesson 8 (Week 9). Work on the Course Project will begin at that time.

Goal: Leveraging the design principles and techniques learned so far in the course, you are to create an interactive, exploratory dashboard that includes at least three well-designed data visualizations as well as filter controls for key variables of interest that will allow the user to explore the data at a deeper level.  Note: the three visualizations and filter controls should all be integrated into a SINGLE dashboard design (please see Lesson 8, Section C for an example).  Storyboards that link a sequence of separate worksheet visualizations using a narrative are not acceptable for this project.

You may use any data set (other than the pre-packaged datasets that come with Tableau) that you find interesting and intriguing to create a dashboard that tells a compelling story. You have complete freedom in choosing the data domain as well as the visualization techniques but make sure you produce a high quality, interactive visualizations for your exploratory dashboard.

Dataset

Below are sites where you can find links to data repositories.  Note: You may not use  the pre-packaged datasets (e.g., Superstore) that are incorporated with the Tableau software for your course project.

While you are free to explore the web besides the sites listed above, recall one of the principles we laid out for creating a meaningful and effective visualizations. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what is it that you wish to explore and then look for the right data set to answer those questions. It is a crucial first step!

Assignment Details

You are to provide three deliverables for your project:

  1. Project document: A multi-page PDF document that provides detail about the purpose of the dashboard, who its users will be, what data will drive each visualization in the dashboard, a list of analytic questions and queries that a person should be able to answer using the dashboard visualizations, and the rationale for the different design principles and techniques used in creating the interactive dashboard visualizations.
  2. Project demonstration: Prepare a dashboard demonstration in either a screen capture video ORdocument format (described below) that is designed to illustrate the capabilities of your dashboard. This demonstration should include at least one specific example of how your dashboard can be used to derive insights from your dataset.  Choose one of the following formats for your project demonstration:

(a) Video format (i.e., screen capture video): A 5 minute or less (.mp4 format) screen capture video that illustrates the capabilities and example use of your dashboard.

Suggestions: Macs come with QuickTime which is great tool for capturing screen recordings. Camtasia is an excellent commercial tool for creating videos on Windows. They do allow a free 30 day trial which should be sufficient time for you to complete your project.  Students have also used CamStudio, a freely available open source tool.  You may also use Zoom to record your presentation (see PSU Canvas Help for details).

(b) Document format (pdf):  Prepare a series of screenshots along with informative captions to illustrate the capabilities of your dashboard and guide a viewer through a particular use case.  Please save the ‘Project Demonstration’ document in a pdf format.

Suggestion: Use as many screenshots as necessary to adequately communicate the dashboard capabilities and an example use of your dashboard.

  1. Packagedworkbook: A single packaged workbook (.twbx) that contains all the resources needed for users to run the dashboard (follow this linkLinks to an external site. to learn how to create a packaged workbook for sharing)

Later in the course, you will return to this assignment to perform a peer review of two interactive dashboards: You will be required to review two completed Course Projects from your peers. Peer review guidelines will be available after the completed projects have been submitted

How fast on average does a cashier serve a customer in our shop? Have you spotted any outlier in the collected service data? If yes, did you include (or exclude) those outliers when coming up the average, and why?

Excel Modelling and Individual Report – The University of Puddletown’s Students’ Union Shop

Description of the assignment:

Background

(Any similarities to the student shop at the University of Hertfordshire are entirely coincidental. This is a fictional example.)

The Students’ Union Shop is trying to work out how many cashiers it needs to employ in order to provide an adequate service level. Customers at the shop line up in a single queue and are called forward to pay for their purchases when a till becomes free. To help determine the busy times of the day, the shop has recorded the number of customers arriving at the tills in each 5-minute interval during the shop’s opening hours, from 8am until 6pm (N.B. this is the number who actually make a purchase and does not include customers who are just browsing). Records for a period of 5 weeks are available. All the data were collected during term time.

The shop usually functions with just three cashiers but it has the capacity to support up to 6. The shop is open for approximately 50 weeks each year. The management has also collected data about the time it takes for cashiers to take payment. These data come from term time and 1000 records are available. Management are concerned that customers wishing to buy food, in particular, may be going to other outlets within the university such as the Big Ears Sandwich Shop or the Noddy Bar. Management are also concerned about the turnover of their staff and would like to reduce their stress and also stop them getting bored. They would be interested to hear about any innovative operating strategies for doing this.

You are employed as a consultant for the Students’ Union Shop. The shop management would like to hear insights from you, but does have a few specific questions they would like to ask. These are

  • What is the average customer arrival rate per hour based on the current data?
  • The management reckons there are more customers during the lunch break, and would like you to look into this matter. Could you spot any busier period during the day? If so, what are the busier hours?
    • What is the average customer arrival rate per hour during busier period?
    • What is the average customer arrival rate per hour during quieter period?
  • How fast on average does a cashier serve a customer in our shop?
    • Have you spotted any outlier in the collected service data? If yes, did you include (or exclude) those outliers when coming up the average, and why?
  • How many cashiers does the shop need to have a reasonable performance?
    • When taking the average daily arrival? Would you consider the average daily arrival a good measure for cashier arrangement, and why?
    • During busier period if observed?
    • During quieter period if observed?

The shop management is also interested in hearing your thoughts on how the adoption of business analytics in general could positively impact the shop performance. (For students who participant in the Young Enterprise competition AND wish to work this part in their YE group, please see alternative arrangement here.) They would appreciate that you keep this part under 2 pages.

Describe how employing a large number of new workers requires strategic recruiting planning and operational efforts, and discuss what aspects might be different in smaller firms.

Week 3 Case Study

Recruiting at Kia

As economic conditions became more demanding for some employers, other firms continued to recruit people for jobs. One firm, Kia Motors America, added a large number of jobs at one of its newer facilities. As a subsidiary of a South Korean corporation, Kia Motors America added tons of equipment at its West Point, Georgia, plant, so that ultimately about 300,000 vehicles would be produced annually.

As the firm sought recruits to fill its Georgia plant workforce, more than 40,000 individuals applied for the jobs, the bulk of which were production and maintenance positions. However, the need for people in a variety of other occupations, including air-conditioning service people, cafeteria workers, and medical staff, added to the depth and scope of Kia’s recruiting. A limited time frame for applications was set by Kia as part of its recruitment planning.

In the recruiting process, a variety of regional and area sources were contacted as part of the Kia broad publicity and inclusive efforts in the area. Randy Jackson, HR Director, spent a month visiting colleges and churches, appearing on radio and television shows, and using other means to market Kia’s recruiting and employment efforts. All of these activities were done to inform applicants about the numerous jobs at Kia and the month-long time frame for application.

To make its recruiting system effective in screening the large number of applicants, Kia established an online-only application process on a special website. As part of its recruiting efforts, Kia and a Georgia Department of Labor agency worked together. One of the agency activities was to make computers available at a local technical college, libraries, and other locations for those persons without home-based Internet. Having the online system allowed Kia’s HR staff to move quickly to identify those applicants who matched available jobs. The use of this system by HR recruiters and managers doing the hiring made the selection process more efficient.

To aid in the selection of employees, recruiting software was used to sort applicants into electronic “buckets,” divided by work experiences and education. Then an eight-step process was established to let applicants obtain a realistic job preview of working at Kia. These recruiting actions resulted in the hiring of more than 500 new employees within six months. During the rest of the year, an additional 1,200 workers were hired, primarily for the second shift, and more were hired later.

Although smaller employers might not use such an extensive recruiting process, the Kia process illustrates the kinds of recruiting planning, activities, Internet linkages, and other means that can be used by both large and small employers doing recruiting. The long-term success of Kia’s efforts to staff its Georgia operation demonstrates ways in which HR can use both time- and cost-effective recruiting to hire qualified individuals.

Case Study Questions

  1. Describe how employing a large number of new workers requires strategic recruiting planning and operational efforts, and discuss what aspects might be different in smaller firms.
  2. Discuss how utilizing the Internet, like Kia did and other employers do, is changing how recruiting efforts are occurring for a variety of jobs in employers of different sizes.

You will be expected to have a Similarity Index of less than 15%. If your Similarity Index is greater than 15%, you will need to review your Originality Report to ensure that you have paraphrased your work appropriately and cited your sources correctly.

Write a one-page editorial that demonstrates advocacy for young people affected by the social policy.

Social Policy and Advocacy Assignment

Background
One of the goals of this class is to examine how social policies in health, education, social services, and justice impact young people and families in Canada. For this assignment, you will research a social policy that affects young people and their families. You will compare various news coverages of the policy using a graphic organizer to demonstrate the different perspectives on the chosen policy. You will then write a one-page editorial that demonstrates advocacy for young people affected by the social policy.

Instructions
1. Research and select a CURRENT social policy that affects young people and their families that is currently in the news (within the last year). Look at a variety of news outlets (such as the Edmonton Journal, CBC News, Edmonton Sun, Calgary Herald, or other news outlets. You can find a list of Alberta newspapers here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_Alberta
 Your instructor may suggest a specific policy – please check with your instructor for more information.

2. Once you have selected the social policy, use the attached graphic organizer to organize the different perspectives on this issue. The graphic organizer requires you to give a brief, objective overview of the policy, then offer four different perspectives on the policy (see the graphic organiser for the different perspectives you will consider).

3. Once you have completed your graphic organizer outlining four different ways to consider the social policy, write a single spaced 2-page letter to an elected official that outlines your position on the policy and advocating for specific changes to the policy on behalf of the young people affected.
