ESSAY ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

In General Psychology, you will write several essays throughout the term. For each essay you will answer a question about the Module: Week topic(s), writing in a way that is engaging and furthers discussion on the topic. Use the guidelines below to write a substantive essay:

1. Each essay must include at least 400 words.

2. While meeting the word count is important, it is possible to write an essay that is long enough, but not substantive enough to earn full credit. The second criteria of a good essay is including a clear and substantial answer to the prompt. When preparing your essay, ask yourself,
• Does my essay answer the question or questions being posed?
• Does it clearly answer all parts of the question, supported by course materials?

3. When answering the essay question, it is important to use concepts, research, and/or theories from the Module: Week material to support your thoughts. A good essay will:
• Offer a thoughtful response on the topic being discussed, and
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the topic by using material from the resources provided for that Module: Week in your answer. Using anecdotes or personal experiences are not as substantial or scholarly as using research and/or theory to advance the discussion.

4. A good essay offers something new and fresh.
• Avoid simply answering the question with a simple response or reiteration of what the textbook says.
• Present information in a way that advances thought on the topic and shows a clear understanding of and reflection on the material.
• Demonstrate your knowledge by presenting facts.
• Demonstrate your understanding by providing practical application.
• This does not mean that you write and write and write, but rather that you present a thought-filled and reflective essay that addresses the question being asked in a way that demonstrates a true depth of understanding of the Module: Week material.

5. A good essay is written in a scholarly way. Each essay:
• Is free of grammatical and spelling errors,
• Uses current APA format (Student Standards),
• Includes in-text citations and a reference section,
• Includes an APA-formatted title page,
• Demonstrates a solid understanding of course concepts by using scholarly sources rather than personal experience or anecdotes.

Using the provided note card template, create five cards that support the argument and then create five note cards that are against the argument or topic.

Multiple Choice Questions

Critical Thinking Assignment

Directions
Your instructor will provide you with a topic for this assignment. The assignment has multiple steps that will take time to complete. In steps one and two, you will conduct research on your topic using the online databases from Greenville Technical College’s Library. In step three you will create notecards from your research, and in the final step, you will participate in an online debate.

Step One: Go to the Source
Go to
Greenville Technical College’s website
Click Student Resources, then Library Services

Then “Click Here to Start Your Online Search…”

Click Research, then Databases * NOTE: If you are offcampus, then you will need your Student ID number or library card to access the databases

Click AZ tab on top of page

Click the “O” tab and then click Opposing Viewpoints in Context.

Using the topic your instructor assigned, click on the topic, and it will lead you to various subheadings such as “Featured Viewpoints,” “Viewpoints,” “News,” and “Magazines.”

“Viewpoints” typically the best option, but please read beyond the first few; obviously, we don’t want to duplicate the same data, the same findings.

Step Two: Time to Read
Now it’s time to read from the list of sources. If you find some interesting, worthy information, then you can save it, bookmark it, or even print it.

As you read, you may want to consider “holes” in the authors’ arguments; for example, are they over generalizing? Do you disagree with them? Why or why not?

Be an active reader. Ask questions. Like a good detective, you are trying to gather evidence.

Step Three: Let’s Make Some Note Cards
Note cards are an excellent way to organize your thoughts and information, whether you’re studying for a test, preparing for a speech or debate, or even crafting a lengthy essay or research paper. Note cards help you prepare and arrange the information you are about to insert and utilize, either vocally or written.

Now that you have read some amazingly cool stuff, let’s get that information down while it’s still fresh.

Using the provided note card template, create five cards that support the argument and then create five note cards that are against the argument or topic.
When you have both sides of the topic, then you can critically argue with good facts, statistics, and ideas. This is what critical thinking is all about.

Watch out for assumptions, claims, and faulty/fallacious reasoning. *See fallacious reasoning document attached to this assignment.

Finally, make two MLAstyle bibliography cards. In MLA format, this is called a Works Cited page, and it is the last page in an essay or research paper. In other words, we always want to give credit where credit is due if the ideas don’t belong to us, and we take credit for them, then it would be considered plagiarism.

The “Source Citation” will be at the bottom of the article, so transfer that information to the cards; have one “for” bibliography card, and one “against” bibliography card. This will give you a total of twelve cards.

Congratulations! You’ve done it, and if you want more information on MLA style formatting, you can also visit the
Online Writing Lab at Purdue
Attach your 12 note cards to the Critical Thinking Assignment.

Step Four: Prepare to Share
Now that you have created your awesome twelve notes cards, it’s time to share for the debate on the discussion board.

Go to the Critical Thinking Debate discussion on the Discussion Board

State your position on the issue and one of the points from your note cards to the discussion board.

Respond to at least two other classmate’s postings, stating your position on the issue and using information from your cards.

Explain that there is a lot of research about language impairments when the left hemisphere is damaged, but there is not as much about RIGHT hemisphere which is the focus of the essay. Explain the role of the right hemisphere with regards to pragmatic functions.

Pragmatic language impairments

The essay will be about pragmatic language impairments. In particular as a result of damage to the RIGHT hemisphere (NOT the LEFT hemisphere). You can certainly start off in the Introduction by mentioning the theory of lateralisation (that is how right and left hemisphere have supposedly different functions). You can also explain that there is a lot of research about language impairments when the left hemisphere is damaged (the left hemisphere is considered the site of language), but there is not as much about RIGHT hemisphere which is the focus of the essay. Explain the role of the right hemisphere with regards to pragmatic functions. Remember that this is an essay for a module in Neurolinguistics. Therefore, the focus has to be on the linguistic aspect, anything that is related to language (ignore things like difficulty in understanding people’s facial expressions or changes in behaviour due to right hemisphere damage). You only have to analyse the effects on different aspects of language such as

  • Speech acts (a threat, joke, promise).
  • Register (may be overly informal).
  • Initiating, terminating, turn-taking in
  • conversational exchanges.
  • Providing sufficient information for
  • communicative intention (relevance).
  • Adequate or appropriate prosody/tone.
  • Coherence of discourse topic, maintenance and shif

Prepare a report demonstrating an awareness of the knowledge, skills and experience required by a recent graduate to enter a chosen area of graduate employment. Identity an area of graduate employment that you would consider for when you leave university.

OVERVIEW
Prepare a report demonstrating an awareness of the knowledge, skills and experience required by a recent graduate to enter a chosen area of graduate employment. The research required to prepare the report will support you in your future career planning and decisions. This report will provide the basis of the information for your self-reflection and career action plan report CW2

A) THE TASK WHAT YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO DO
You are required to identity an area of graduate employment that you would consider for when you leave university. This could be EITHER a profession (for example marketing/Finance/Accounting/HR) OR an industry you are interested in (for example retail, sports
Module code and title & leisure, public sector, not-for-profit, travel and tourism.) Your research should be either in an area you aspire to work within or maybe an area that you want to understand more about

Your research in your chosen profession/industry should include likely future trends in graduate recruitment, and should equip you with the knowledge to write a summary of the key skills, knowledge and experience expected from graduate applicants.
You are encouraged to use both primary and secondary research for this assignment. Primary research might include attending events run by the careers team, and/or events run by the professional bodies, or else through personal contacts. It might also include information from the guest lecturers for the module. You could consider talking to managers at work, if you have a part-time role, or else friends and family to enhance your understanding. Include in the appendix a log detailing who you contacted for primary research.

Having identified the profession/industry, you are then required to identify one current job being advertised that you would be interested in applying for in the future. This will form the basis of the second assignment. The advert should appear as an appendix, which you should refer to as necessary within your report. It is important that this is a graduate level job, and not one for an individual with many years experience.

B) THE REPORT WHAT YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO SUBMIT
You are required to submit a written report of 1500 words. It is suggested that you use the headings shown in this briefing or you may use your own headings; what is important is that you clearly cover all areas outlined below.

The report should include the following sections:
INTRODUCTION – Provide a brief paragraph outlining the aims of the report and what profession/industry your assignment will cover. As this is your reflection, this section can be in the 1st person.
Analysis and Application- This section of the report should be as a factual reflection of the findings from the profession/industry you have chosen to research. You need to consider both primary and secondary research for this section. This section should be written in the 3rd person and should include the key information regarding this profession/industry in terms of:

General trends which will impact on your chosen profession/industry. What changes are happening in your chosen profession/industry which might impact on the jobs you apply for and the skills and knowledge you will need. Consider the impact of globalisation and technology for example. This section will be based on your secondary research but might also include comments or views from anyone you interview for your primary research.

The skills / knowledge and experience required Using information from secondary research, relevant professional bodies, and relevant job advertisements, provide a summary based on your research of the key skills / knowledge and experience expected from an applicant at this stage in their career. Again, this might be supported by your primary research. You should aim for at least 5 personal skills and 2 areas of knowledge and expertise.

Evaluation For this section you need to identify an appropriate vacancy from your chosen profession/industry. You should include the advertisement in full (not a website link ) in the appendices. Within the report, explain why this job role is of interest to you. How does it relates to your potential choice of industry/profession? Why do you prefer this job opportunity to others you considered? Is this a new/emerging job role within your profession/industry and therefore likely to be future proofed? This can be written in the 1st person.
