INFLUENCE TACTICS AND SOURCES OF POWER

Assignment Overview
Koch Industries is one of the most profitable privately held corporations in the country. In spite of being owned primarily by four brothers, it has not been immune from intense internal power plays and intrigue. A decades-long dispute between CEO Charles Koch and his younger brother Bill Koch led first to an internal battle for control of the company and ended with a lawsuit between the brothers.

Carefully review the background materials regarding sources of power within an organization and influence tactics. Examples of sources of power include reward power, coercive power, legitimate power, and expert power. Examples of influence tactics include forming coalitions, pressure, and exchanging favors. Make sure to understand the main power sources and influence tactics and know the vocabulary and definitions from the background materials before starting the assignment.

The epic battle between two of the Koch brothers tested the limits of both of their power bases within Koch Industries. Both used multiple tactics before Charles Koch ultimately secured his position of almost unrivaled power within the corporation. Do some research about this power struggle using the Trident Online Library and online news sources. Here are some articles to get you started:

Schulman, D. (2014, Jul). Koch vs. Koch. Mother Jones, 39, 16–27,64,2

Tomsho, R. (1989, Aug 09). Blood feud: Koch family is roiled by sibling squabbling over its oil empire: Fired by his brother, William sues often, helps feds to probe Koch Industries, haling mother into court. Wall Street Journal [ProQuest]

Once you have finished your research, write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following issues. Make sure to cite at least 3 of the required background readings in addition to articles about the Koch brothers in your paper:

What were Charles and Bill Koch’s sources of power within Koch Industries? Did they have reward power, coercive power, legitimate power, or expert power? Any other sources of power? Refer to Bauer and Erdogan (2012) or Luthans et al. (2015) in your answer, as you should demonstrate a solid understanding of these readings as part of your answer.

What influence tactics did each of them use in their battle for control? Refer to Bauer and Erdogan (2012) or Luthans et al. (2015) in your answer.

Ultimately what do you think led to Charles Koch’s victory in this battle, and what do you think are the most important lessons on organizational power that you learned from reading about this power struggle?

Concrete Experience is the personal involvement in a specific, direct experience with this topic. Who, what, why, how long? Reflection and Observation on this experience are important. Ask yourselves: What did I think? What did I notice? What worked/did not work? Will I do something differently now as a result of this experience?

Writing Experiential Learning Essays
GOAL: To describe (articulate) the learning so the evaluator can recognize it.

REMEMBER: Credit is awarded for learning not the experience! Experience is the framework or the environment learning takes place in.

BEFORE WRITING: A lot of time is spent identifying knowledge before the actual writing occurs.

COMMON ERROR: Writing about experience and not showing learning.

DAVID KOLB, a noted professor and researcher from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, developed a model to help adults get learning out of their experience.

Kolb’s Premise: Learning involves a CYCLE OF FOUR PROCESSES which must each be present for learning to occur most completely.

THE FOUR PROCESSES:
1.Concrete Experience is the personal involvement in a specific, direct experience with this topic. Who, what, why, how long?

2.Reflection and Observation on this experience are important. Ask yourselves: What did I think? What did I notice? What worked/did not work? Will I do something differently now as a result of this experience?

3.Abstract Concepts are the logical conclusions drawn from your reflection. This is the brainwork. You should ask yourselves: What did I learn? Did I see a trend or pattern? Think beyond your situation would this work for others? This is the place to interact with the theories of others. You should cite theories from books or articles you have read about this subject.

4.Active Experimentation is the application of knowledge in a new situation. You must go outside of the situation you are in and use the learning differently.

Develop a video case presentation, based on your progress note of this patient, that includes chief complaint; history of present illness; any pertinent past psychiatric, substance use, medical, social, family history; most recent mental status exam; and current psychiatric diagnosis, including differentials that were ruled out.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation and Patient Case Presentation

Comprehensive psychiatric evaluations are a way to reflect on your practicum experiences and connect the experiences to the learning you gain from your weekly Learning Resources. Comprehensive notes, such as the ones required in this practicum course, are often used in clinical settings to document patient care.

For this Assignment, you will document information about a patient that you examined during the last 5 weeks, using the Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation Template provided. You will then use this note to develop and record a case presentation for this patient.

To Prepare

  • Select a patient that you examined during the last 5 weeks. Review prior resources on the disorder this patient has.
    • It is recommended that you use the Kaltura Personal Capture tool to record and upload your assignment.
    • Review the Kaltura Media Uploader resource in the left-hand navigation of the classroom for help creating your self-recorded Kaltura Personal Capture video. The Personal Capture Quickstart Guide will walk you through creating your video, uploading it to Blackboard and placing it into the assignment area.
  • Conduct a Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation on this patient using the template provided in the Learning Resources. There is also a completed exemplar document in the Learning Resources so that you can see an example of the types of information a completed evaluation document should contain. All psychiatric evaluations must be signed, and each page must be initialed by your Preceptor. When you submit your document, you should include the complete Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation as a Word document, as well as a PDF/images of each page that is initialed and signed by your Preceptor. You must submit your document using SafeAssign. Please Note: Electronic signatures are not accepted. If both files are not received by the due date, Faculty will deduct points per the Walden Late Policies.
  • Develop a video case presentation, based on your progress note of this patient, that includes chief complaint; history of present illness; any pertinent past psychiatric, substance use, medical, social, family history; most recent mental status exam; and current psychiatric diagnosis, including differentials that were ruled out.
  • Include at least five (5) scholarly resources to support your assessment and diagnostic reasoning.
  • Ensure that you have the appropriate lighting and equipment to record the presentation.

Assignment

Record yourself presenting the complex case for your clinical patient. In your presentation:

  • Dress professionally and present yourself in a professional manner.
  • Display your photo ID at the start of the video when you introduce yourself.
  • Ensure that you do not include any information that violates the principles of HIPAA (i.e., don’t use the patient’s name or any other identifying information).
  • Present the full case. Include chief complaint; history of present illness; any pertinent past psychiatric, substance use, medical, social, family history; most recent mental status exam; and current psychiatric diagnosis, including differentials that were ruled out.
  • Report normal diagnostic results as the name of the test and “normal” (rather than specific value). Abnormal results should be reported as a specific value.

Be succinct in your presentation, and do not exceed 8 minutes. Address the following:

  • Subjective: What details did the patient provide regarding their personal and medical history? What are their symptoms of concern? How long have they been experiencing them, and what is the severity? How are their symptoms impacting their functioning?
  • Objective: What observations did you make during the interview and review of systems?
  • Assessment:What were your differential diagnoses? Provide a minimum of three (3) possible diagnoses. List them from highest to lowest priority. What was your primary diagnosis, and why?
  • Reflection notes:What would you do differently in a similar patient evaluation?

Divide the data into twining set and test set. The training set should contain the first 2/3 of spammessages and first 2/3 of ham (i.e., non-spam) messages. The test set should contain the last 1/3 spam messages and last 1/3 ham messages. Write a logistic regression program (function) using gradient descent algorithm.

Engineering Mathematics 2

Introduction
The main aims of this mathematical analysis and computer modelling tasks are twofold; firstly, to get a deeper insight and increase your understanding of the mathematical theory and the various methods used in engineering analysis. Secondly, to gain experience in computer modelling techniques by using an industryleading mathematical simulation package such as
MATLAB The coursework consists of Tasks 1 and 2. The first one involves the application of ODEs in chemical reaction engineering. The second one deals with the use of numerical methods to solve PDEs obtained for 2d conductive heat transfer. Use the template provided on Moodle to prepare your submission.

TASK 1: Application of ODEs in chemical reaction engineering (50%)

Reactions in series are commonly occurring in chemical engineering. This task is an openended assignment regarding the application of advanced mathematics in analyzing the reaction kinetics in a series of reactions. To keep the flow of the solution at a consistent level, use the below set of reactions in a batch reactor and find the changes of concentration over time for all the species via the general mole balances approach. Solve the resulting ODEs using three methods stated below and compare the results via MATLAB:
𝐴 𝑘1
𝐵 𝑘2
𝐶

a) The analytical solution using the exponential functions

b) Laplace transformation pathway with presumed initial conditions

c) Numerical methods and approximation of derivations

d) Using parameter tuning in your programming, obtain various trends under which B concentration peaks and degrades. What parameters influence this behaviour and how?

TASK 2: Applications of PDEs in 2d conductive heat transfer (50%)
For a twodimensional heat transfer in the figure below, find the temperature at the four internal nodes while addressing the questions:

a) Derive the governing equations for heat transfer under steadystate conditions (for x and y directions).

b) Apply the finite difference method to find the algebraic representation of the governing equations for each node.

c) Pick a temperature for each side of the sample (last integer ending with the last digit of your student ID) within the given range and calculate the temperatures at the internal nodes. Use two different methods for solving simultaneous eqiations in MATLAB.

d) Create 9 internal nodes (instead of 4) and find the temperature distributions in that case. Research the suitable approaches to build the resulting equation system and solve it using
