DRIVE CAPITAL

“Mark Kwame, co-founder and managing partner of Drive Capital, predicts that four-year university system is on its way out due to fundamental changes within the skill set required for any position (Building the Entrepreneurial Workforce. 2015). The push to teach only the “needed skills” jeopardizes the core purpose of education, originally positioned to develop and nourish young minds, while creating life-long learners, not self-absorbed and self-centered, aware of the issues facing our society. The narrow -minded skill driven spectrum is replacing the broad-minded educational format throughout the academic world. Considering today’s environment of rapid technological changes, many of the “needed tools” become obsolete by the time students finish their degree or shortly thereafter. Through “teaching only the needed skills” focus, academia created a very limited framework, with graduates being successful only if their desired career path remains unchanged (no longer a very plausible scenario).”

What are your initial reactions, thoughts, and feelings about this situation? How willing would you be to work with Candy as your primary client if she had come in simply because her father said that she needed counseling?

First Assignment

Candy: An adolescent in rebellion
Fourteen-year-old Candy, her father, and her mother are sitting with you in your office for an initial counseling session.
Her father begins: “I’m just at the end of my rope with my daughter! I’m sick and tired of what I see her doing to disrupt our family life. I’m constantly wondering what she’ll pull next in her long line of antics. She’s gone to the Colorado River with some guys who are older than she is, in outright defiance of my order not to go. She’s done any number of things she knows I disapprove of, and the result is that she’s suspended from school for three weeks or until she gets some counseling. This was the last straw that broke my back. Her getting kicked out of school was just too much. It moved me to call you, so we can get to the bottom of Candy’s problem and get her straightened out. God only knows she needs some straightening out. She’s into drugs and dating older men, and I strongly suspect that she’s been messing around. Candy knows what my values are, and she knows that what she’s doing is wrong. I just don’t know how to convince her that if she doesn’t change, she’ll come to a bad end.”
Candy’s mother is rather quiet and does not list complaints against Candy. She generally agrees that Candy does seem defiant and says she does not know how to handle her. She says she becomes very upset at seeing her husband get angry and worried over the situation, and she hopes that counseling will help Candy see some of what they see. As for Candy she initially says very little other than “I guess I’ve got a problem.” She appears very withdrawn, sullen, and not too eager to open up in this situation with her parents. She is in your office mainly because she was brought in by her parents.

Show how you would proceed to use the cycle of counseling as a reality therapist if Candy were your client for three sessions. (Answer all the 5 questions below)
A Reality therapist is a form of counseling that views behaviors as choices. It states that psychological symptoms occur not because of a mental health condition, but due to people choosing behaviors to fulfill their needs.

1) What are your initial reactions, thoughts, and feelings about this situation? How willing would you be to work with Candy as your primary client if she had come in simply because her father said that she needed counseling?

2) Assume that in an individual session with Candy she does open up with you, and you find out that her father’s presentation of the problems is correct. In fact, matters are worse than he imagined. Candy tells you that she had an abortion recently after a short affair with a married man in his early 30s. She also tells you that she has been experimenting with various drugs. How might you proceed in working with her if you found yourself being very concerned over where her behavior might lead her? What might you want to say to her?

3) Your central task as a reality therapist is to guide Candy toward making an honest assessment of her current behavior and to help her evaluate the results of her behavior. Show how you will attempt to do this. How will you respond if she resists looking at her own behavior, insisting that her problems stem from her demanding and moralistic father, who is driving her to rebellion?

4) What are your values regarding drug usage, sexual experimentation, abortion, accepting parental values? Might you attempt to influence her subtly to change her behavior in the way you think she should? Or do you think that you could accept her choices, providing that she made an evaluation of her behavior and decided that she did not really want to change?

5) Assume that you have a session with Candy, her father, and her mother after seeing Candy for three individual sessions. The purpose of this session is to talk about where to go from here and to make recommendations. What would you be inclined to tell the parents? What would you not tell the parents? What specific recommendations might you make?

First define the terms ”development” and ”learning.” Then describe how the processes of development and learning are related?

Chapter 4 Reading Questions

Instructions
Reading/study questions are included for each chapter. Follow the syllabus and Talon for due dates. Late submissions will NOT be graded. Generally, you will find it beneficial to view the videos before answering the questions for each chapter. Submit reading/study questions in the drop box as an attachment.

Thoughtfully respond in writing to the following study questions

1. First define the terms ”development” and ”learning.” Then describe how the processes of development and learning are related?

2. As discussed in this chapter, children’s experiences and relationships impact brain development. This chapter provides many implications or suggestions about how we use our knowledge about brain development in our practice with children and families. Describe two of the implications and how we can use them to inform our practice.

3. Erikson’s theory focuses on personal and social development through eight stages of life. Briefly explain the first three stage of the early years in your own words:

  • Trust vs Mistrust
  • Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt
  • Initiative vs Guilt

4. Piaget’s theory focuses on cognitive development. He recognized that children don’t think like adults. Their thinking develops over time through interactions with the others and the environment. Briefly describe the cognitive development of children in the:

  • Sensorimotor stage
  • Preoperational period.

5. Give your own example of each of the following kinds of play:

  • Functional Play
  • Constructive Play
  • Symbolic or Dramatic Play
  • Games with Rules

Briefly share your memory and then reflect on what you were learning while you played. What area of development did you enhance? When you think about this play experience, do you find you are still interested in these kinds of play or do you express this in your work?

Chapter 4 Discussion: Play

This discussion post has two parts: Share a favorite Play Memory and Share an Example of Imitation

1. In the opening of this module, I told a story about some of my favorite play memories outdoors as a child. In this discussion post, I’d like you to think about a favorite play memory from your childhood. Briefly share your memory and then reflect on what you were learning while you played. What area of development did you enhance? When you think about this play experience, do you find you are still interested in these kinds of play or do you express this in your work?

For example, my oldest son is an architect. As a child he loved to play with blocks, draw and later tinker on the computer. Those early play experiences and interests are definitely connected to his work as an architect. Do you see a connection from your play favorite play experiences to your current job interests or hobbies?

2. In the chapter we learned about Bandura’s social cognitive theory. In this theory he asserts that children learn by imitating others. When my youngest son was about three, he noticed me throwing a pair of socks up the stairs in our home to his big brother(throwing things up or down the stairs was not allowed in our home!). He watched me do this, stood with his hands on his hips and said in a very loud voice ”Mom! That’s not apopiate (appropriate) behavior!” Wow! Where do you think a three year old learned that? He had my behavior down to the tone of my voice, hands on the hips and used a big vocabulary word for a three year old!

Share an example of a time you notice a child imitating others. Who were they imitating? Parents, siblings, friends, characters on the television? Was it a positive or negative behavior they were imitating?

Reflect upon whether you have ever had to make an ethical decision at your workplace. What was the situation? How did your employer react? What would you have done differently, if anything, in hindsight?

Response to Video

In addition to watching the video and answering the multiple choice questions, write one paragraph analyzing where Gina went wrong, and what alternative, more ethical courses she could have taken. In your opinion, what would you have done? Why? What makes what Gina did less than ethical?

For the next part of this brief report, reflect upon whether you have ever had to make an ethical decision at your workplace. If so, what was the situation? How did your employer react? What would you have done differently, if anything, in hindsight?

Do you suspect nutrients such as vitamins and minerals could induce, aggregate, and/or possibly prevent the misfolding of proteins?

Pack back Assignment 7 Forming A Question

Question 1

Do you suspect nutrients such as vitamins and minerals could induce, aggregate, and/or possibly prevent the misfolding of proteins?

In Chapter 4 we learned about the structures of proteins, ultimately leading to the actual folding of a fully-formed protein. It is a meticulous process that may produce misfolded proteins. In diseases such as Alzheimer’s, the ongoing occurrence of protein misfolding results in the deterioration of brain activity, further resulting in memory loss, confusion, delusion, etc.

The brain physically changes as the neurodegenerative disease advances. It has been established that the brain shrinks and develops amyloid plaques, which appear as abnormal clumps, and neurofibrillary tangles, which appear as bundles of fibers.

In one study published in 2011, the accumulation of metals was found in the plaques described. It states, “Within the mature plaques from diseased brains, high concentrations of metals such as Fe, Cu, and Zn are also found…this finding implies that along with protein aggregate accumulation, metals may contribute to [Alzheimer’s] onset and progression.” (DeToma et al., 2011)

How might our diets influence the misfolding of proteins?

Question 2

Vegans must combine amino acids from different sources to form a complete protein, do all the essential amino acids need to be eaten at once or can a ‘complete protein’ be comprised of different meals throughout the day?

Meat is a good source of protein that many people can eat, because vegans don’t eat meat they are more at risk for becoming deficient in essential amino acids. Many vegans try to consume complimentary plant protein sources in the same meal to ensure they’re eating a ‘complete protein’ that has all the essential amino acids.

For example, eating grains and legumes together creates a complete protein. My question is would someone have to eat them at the same time or could they eat them at two different meals and still get the same benefit.

  • The question information should include the below:
  1. What is your question?
  2. Add a Description piece to go along with the question that supports information around your question.
  3. Cite your source by posting a link or typing a book title.
