Do you think that this type of moral choice between the lesser of evils as in this Trolley Problem is realistic to what we might face in our everyday lives or places of employment? Do you think there is such a thing as a moral duty to choose between the lesser of evils?

Forum Week 5

Texas has a law that prohibits the removal of mechanical life-support such as a ventilator from a pregnant patient.

In November 2013, when Marlise Munoz was 14 weeks pregnant she was found unconscious in her Texas home. With her husband and family in deep distress, they rushed her to a hospital where she was placed on a machine to keep her alive. Soon thereafter, doctors at the hospital pronounced her brain dead. Her husband and family eventually asked that she be removed from life support but Texas law prohibits removing a pregnant woman from life support if it threatens the life of the fetus. A Texas judge has now ordered that the 22-week pregnant woman be removed from life support, as requested by the family. For background, click here: LINK (Links to an external site.).

For our week 4 discussion, answer the two following questions:

[1] From a utilitarian moral perspective of the greatest good of the greatest number and also the utilitarian evaluative criteria of happiness versus suffering, explain the rightness or wrongness of a law that prohibits the removal of a pregnant woman from life support. Also, discuss the sad case of Marlise Munoz with someone else for how that person feels about it and what moral concerns s/he has about this particular case. Do you think that the husband of Marlise Munoz should only be granted his request to remove his wife because he has concerns about indications of severe abnormalities in the developing fetus but not if the fetus were perfectly normal? Explain.

[2] In terms of utilitarian ethics, discuss the moral issues at stake in the famous so-called Trolley Problem as related in the eText and also Michael Sandel’s Harvard lecture (LINK (Links to an external site.)), where “you are beside a train track with a train headed down the track. However, on the track ahead are five people who will all be killed if the train continues. But you also have access to a switch, and if you pull it the train will be diverted onto another track where there is only one person” (eText p.36). Do you think that this type of moral choice between the lesser of evils as in this Trolley Problem is realistic to what we might face in our everyday lives or places of employment? Do you think there is such a thing as a moral duty to choose between the lesser of evils? Why or why not? Can you give an example to support your point?

Which company is a more efficient generator of income? Which company is growing faster? Using financial health ratios, which company is more profitable?   Which company has stronger valuation ratios?    Overall, which is the better run company and why?

Performance Management and Valuation

The risk analysis work you did in the first assignment was a great start. It helped to paint a picture of where NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) are in their corporate lifecycles, the threats and opportunities each faces, and the defensibility of their economic moats – a metaphor that Buffett loves to use.
In this assignment, you will continue your analysis by comparing key performance management metrics of our two companies, identifying areas of relative strength and weakness, and suggesting ways that each company could improve, thereby increasing its valuation. To do this, you will examine trends in order to identify variances and comparisons to: (1) establish benchmarks, (2) identify best practices, and (3) look for signs of superior performance. This analysis is critical in determining the value of each company, as well as evaluating whether potential acquisition or merger opportunities exist which could create greater value and synergies than those of operating the companies as separate entities.

b. Would you recommend a merger or acquisition to increase the moat strength of the combined companies? Why             why not?

• If you support a merger or acquisition, identify 3 performance metrics that could be improved by a merger and explain how they would be improved. Guidance for this is found on pages 107-117 of The CFO Guidebook

Identify the IDE window, the Console window and the Variable Explorer window

Solutions of Python Programming Assignment

Spyder Familiarisation Exercise

1. Open the Spyder IDE. This can be done by

a. Downloading and installing Anaconda on your Mac or PC. Go to
https://www.anaconda.com look under Products, select individual Edition, then click Download and select the version appropriate to your computer.

b. Use a webbrowser (If using a Mac, Chrome is better browser than Safari).
Enter http://aka.ms/wvdarmweb into the URL search field and then follow the instructions. See video “Access Spyder with Browser” on the PH185 Myplace page

c. Use the Remote Desktop, instructions on how to download can be found at
https://docs.microsoft.com/enus/windowsserver/remote/remotedesktopservices/clients/remotedesktopclients. Follow the set up instructions shown in the video “Access Spyder with Remote Desktop” on the PH185 Myplace
page.

d. If you are using a Mac and download Anaconda watch the video “SpyderMac” on the PH185 Myplace page.

e. If you are using a PC and download Anaconda the steps to open Spyder given in the video “SpyderPC”.

2. Identify the IDE window, the Console window and the Variable Explorer window, see the video “Spyder layout”.

3. In the IDE window type (If you cut and paste you may need to change the single quote punctation marks ‘ otherwise you may get an error message). Do not worry about what the statements below mean, we will cover this during the module.

import numpy as np
myname = input(‘My name is:’)
array1 = np.linspace(1, 10, 10)
array2 = np.linspace(20, 35, 16).reshape(2, 8)
array3 = np.linspace(100, 135, 36).reshape(2, 3, 6)
notarray = 6.7

4. Save the file. If you are using the virtual desktop save to either your OneDrive or your hDrive. The hDrive can be accessed through the File Explorer by expanding “This PC” . It may be sensible to create a folder called PH185 in either drive to store your work.

5. Press the green “run” arrow and the text “My name is: appears in the Console window.

6. Place the cursor after the colon and enter your name

7. The variables created in step 3 now appear in the Variable Explorer Window. With reference to the video ‘Using the debugger’ on the PH185 Myplace page explore the values stored in each array. Try changing the integers in the reshape() method. If you do this make sure that the product of the integers is 16 for the 2D array and 36 for a 3D array.

8. Return to the console window and after the colon by In [2]: type the variable name myname then press return. You will see Out[2]: ‘your name’ appear in the console window.

9. Repeat step 8 for the other variables created in step 3.

You can change the appearance of the Spyder window. Simply click on the Spanner Icon at the top of the Spyder window. To change the background color select appearance and edit that.
