How might an Equity Empowered health care system change the patient experience? What changes in patient outcomes would you expect to see?

Health Care Services among Racial/Ethnic Group

The National Institute for Children’s Health Quality recently developed a strategy for combating racism in health care settings, called the Equity Empowered System. You learned about this in the assigned webinar this week, and can review a shorthand version here: https://www.nichq.org/insight/savior-designed-equity-empowered-systems (Links to an external site.)

Consider a health system you are very familiar with. This may be a system you work in, a system that you have engaged with as a patient, or any other health care system you have interacted with frequently.

1. What is your relationship with this system? A generic description is fine (i.e. “I am an employee/patient”)

2. Do you think this system most closely fits a Savior-Designed, Ally, or Equity Empowered model? Explain.

3. Suggest and describe 2-3 specific actions this system to could take to follow an Equity Empowered model. Be specific and detail how your health system would do this (for example, rather than say “share power in decision-making with underrepresented groups – explain what actions the system could take to manifest this and with which groups.)

4. How might an Equity Empowered health care system change the patient experience? What changes in patient outcomes would you expect to see?

Case Study presention

Overview: Students will present a case study based on the Pearson family from “This is Us”. “This Is Us” is a unique show. It details the lives of the Pearson family over a span of 35 years. In order to complete the case study assignment, I would like you to approach the family from the perspective of current day (when Randall, Kate and Kevin are adults). When you consider the family from this perspective you will be able to use all the information shared in the show. It will be as if you’ve had 10 sessions with the family and fully appreciate all the family history and dynamics. I realize that as adults the family members do not actually live in the same city. However, we are going to pretend that they can attend family therapy together on a regular basis. Your primary clients are Rebecca, Kate, Kevin and Randall. They are seeking treatment to resolve the conflict between members of the family and improve overall communication. This is a complicated family system. As such, it is a perfect case to present in clinical supervision. Imagine that I am your clinical supervisor. You are presenting this case to me in clinical supervision. Obviously, we cannot meet face to face; therefore, you are going to create a PowerPoint presentation using the outline below. Please submit the completed assignment to the Assignment folder.

Purpose: To prepare students to present case studies for group or individual clinical supervision.

Write a recommendation letter for College about a student who volunteered at your Tutorial Center for 3 years.

Recommendation letter

Write a recommendation letter for College about a student who volunteered at your Tutorial Center for 3 years. A letter of recommendation for a volunteer is important because it tells the university administrator the activities the volunteer has engaged in and the skills they’ve shown and developed throughout their volunteer experience. Volunteers can use many of their hard and soft skills in a professional capacity, so mentioning these skills may help them improve their chances of getting a job or earning a scholarship. Emphasizing the value of the volunteer to the organization can help the recipient understand how the person can benefit their organization as well.

Briefly detail the historical contexts of the social issue. Discuss implications of the social issue for SW practice, and SW theory, in mental health or addictions.

The Dehumanization of Mental Illness

The assignment requires that you explore a social issue (lack of long term supports, supportive housing, resources within education, alternative programming and services, income support, discrimination, coercion, surveillance, confinement, medication, psychiatrization, youth issues, etc.) relating to mental health in Canada and consider the implications of this social issue for social work praxis (theory and practice) in mental health or additions.

In the assignment students should:

Briefly detail the historical contexts of the social issue.
Explore significant political and social questions that have emerged in relation to the topic of interest.
Explore the meaning and effects of concepts learned in the class, as they pertain to the social issue you have chosen.
Discuss implications of the social issue for SW practice, and SW theory, in mental health or addictions.
