List at least one moral issue on which you have changed your thinking. What caused you to change your mind?

Moral issue

List at least one moral issue on which you have changed your thinking. What caused you to change your mind?

Consider all of the relevant factors that may have led to the change: i.e. changes in experience, changes in emotion, changes in logic, changes in evidence, etc. You don’t have to answer all of the aforementioned but try to excavate your own thinking a bit. Try to gain awareness of the way your consciousness responds to yourself, others and the environments you’ve interacted with.

After you’ve considered the factors that led to a change in your thinking, consider your biases. Do your biases match a particular cultural/political/religious group? If so, ask yourself if truly agree in the depths of your being with these views, or if you have some doubts/reservations about such views.

There is no need for an introductory or conclusion paragraph, and this is also not a research assignment. Consider this in exercise in “thinking about thinking”. If none of your views have significantly changed, try playing “devil’s” advocate with yourself. Try to imagine why someone who is just as open-minded and intelligent as you might disagree and contemplate the point of difference.

Do you think that Socrates’ view that philosophy is “preparation for death” makes life more or less valuable? Doesn’t his position make life valuable only if in death, you continue to exist? Doesn’t this put human life in service to an afterlife?

Socrate

Answer the question specifically
Do you think that Socrates’ view that philosophy is “preparation for death” makes life more or less valuable? Doesn’t his position make life valuable only if in death, you (or your soul) continue to exist (in some other form)? Doesn’t this put human life in service to an afterlife?

Critically discuss whether and how professional ethics is distinct from ordinary ethics, using two different professions as the basis for your discussion.

Research paper Philosophy (Business Ethics)

Critically discuss whether and how professional ethics is distinct from ordinary ethics, using two different professions as the basis for your discussion. For each of the two professions you choose, provide at least one example of a situation where, arguably, professional duties would require a violation of ordinary morality. For each situation, defend a position on whether or not professional duties and obligations should take priority over ordinary duties and obligations or vice versa.

Choose a profession other than engineering, and critically discuss whether it is ever morally permissible and/or morally obligatory for a professional to blow the whistle in the case of moral wrong doing. Under what conditions and what kind of actions might warrant whistle blowing?

Critically discuss David Thomasma’s position that physicians may be justified in withholding the truth from patients, which he presents in “Telling the Truth to Patients: A Clinical Ethics Exploration.” What other profession do you think that his argument is applicable to and why?

Critically discuss Benjamin Freedman’s arguments in support of the three standards for informed consent outlined in “A Moral Theory of Informed Consent.” Do you agree with these standards and the reasoning supporting them? If yes, explain why you think his arguments are successful and provide additional argumentation in support of his position. If not, explain why you think his arguments are unsuccessful and what objections might be made or opposing arguments that might be offered. Does the example of prisoners and medical experimentation provide a special case for the standards of informed consent and reasoning supporting it or do his standards and arguments apply equally to more ordinary medical circumstances where informed consent is required?

Critically discuss at least two different concepts of “objectivity” as it applies to journalism and the challenges that it poses for the practice of journalism. Do you think journalistic objectivity (of some form or another) is crucial to the integrity of journalism as a profession? Explain and defend your answer.

Critically compare situations in which lawyers and physicians may wish to withhold their services. Do you believe that physicians and lawyers are professionally and morally obligated to provide their services to those in need? In what way are these professions/professionals similar and different in this regard?

Write a 500-700 word draft explaining what the Mind/Body Problem is, using an example from popular media to illustrate the issue.

Mind/Body Problem

Throughout this course we will build an argumentative paper in stages, beginning with expository sections and working up to a final section where you argue for a thesis of your own. The topic of the paper is the Mind/Body Problem, and the eventual goal of the paper is to argue in support of the philosophical theory of the mind that you think best solves it.

For the first expository section of this paper, write a 500-700 word draft explaining what the Mind/Body Problem is, using an example from popular media to illustrate the issue. The choice of examples is entirely up to you: it can be a film, a television series, a book, etc. — anything that you think will help your reader understand and appreciate the Mind/Body Problem.

In addition to the material on the Mind/Body Problem provided in class, there are sections in these articles from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dualism/#MinBod) and the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (https://iep.utm.edu/rene-descartes-mind-body-distinction-dualism/) that you might find helpful. Of course, in the draft you should explain the Mind/Body Problem entirely in your own words.

Read the information provided about the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia and watch the short videos. Discuss your thoughts about the Hagia Sophia as a Byzantine work of architecture or discuss the impact of its controversial return to being a mosque.

Humanities assignment

Discussion Board one – The Hagia Sophia
For this post you will need to read the information provided about the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia and watch the short videos. Since this building goes from being a Byzantine Christian church to an Islamic mosque to a museum and back to a mosque, some of the information goes beyond the Byzantine Empire into next week’s topic of Islamic cultures and beyond.

In this post you may discuss your thoughts about the Hagia Sophia as a Byzantine work of architecture or discuss the impact of its controversial return to being a mosque. Your post needs to be a minimum of 250 words. You do not need to reply to any of the posts – but if you do, please be respectful.

Information about the Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia, the Church of Holy Wisdom, was the center of the Byzantine empire. This building glorified the Byzantine emperors as much as it glorified God. To quote historian John Romer, “It was here, on the last day of Byzantium, that the emperor and his troops prayed before going out on the city walls to die.”

We know the names of the architects of the Hagia Sophia – Anthemius of Tralles and Isidorus of Miletus. Their design and engineering innovations were marvels of their time and would greatly influence Islamic and, later, Western European architecture.

The Hagia Sophia became a mosque when the Byzantine empire fell to the Islamic empire in 1454CE.;the same time the city of Constantinople was renamed Istanbul. In the early 20th century the Turkish government made it a museum – so it was neither Christian church nor Islamic mosque. In the summer of 2020, the Turkish government decreed it to be a mosque once more. In past semesters, I have fielded a few questions about a church becoming a mosque. This not the first time this has happened, and it has happened the other way. The Cathedral of Cordoba in Spain was originally the Great Mosque of Cordoba from when that part of Spain was part of the Islamic Empire.

Nietzsche’s fundamental insight or assertion seems to be that in order to understand morality we must look at history and human culture. For him morality is not natural in the sense of already being there but is created by humans and evolves. His example is the evolution of what he calls master and slave morality. Describe what he means by these terms. Do you have any objections to his theory?

Briefly state specifically how this source provides evidence that strongly supports your conclusion. If the information is “popular” or if it is from a blog, from a marketing site, or is persuasive in nature explain why you are using the source and why you cannot use a more substantive or scholarly source.

Week 5 Source Evaluation Worksheet

First read the notes that begin on p. 3 of this handout and the table that follows. Then, complete the analysis for each of your sources.

Part 1: Annotation

Using APA format, identify the source and write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article.  A sample annotation can be found in the directions for this assignment.

Annotation 1

Annotation 2

(Continue for as many annotations as you have developed)

Example: Annotation 1

Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and t he erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51, 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living

Part 2: Source Evaluation

Use the following criteria to evaluate each source:

  1. How current is this the source you are using? (If not current – explain why information is still applicable)

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2a

2a. While this source is not current, it has formed the basis for numerous follow-up studies and it frequently cited in the literature; it has both historical value and also serves as a base-point for tracking changing attitudes.

  1. How authoritative, credible, reliable? (For example: recognized expert; peer-reviewed journal; trusted site such as .edu, .gov, .mil; experienced and knowledgeable in the field; information consistent across several sources, etc.)

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2b

2b. This is a scholarly source; the source is credible, reliable and authoritative.  The authors were experts in their fields, published their study in a peer-reviewed journal, and the study has held up under rigorous scrutiny by other experts in the field.

  1. Briefly state specifically how this source provides evidence that strongly supports your conclusion. For example, “the article discusses significant evidence that this diet provides all essential nutrients and supports my view that the diet is healthy” “this study shows that this diet is deficient in vitamin D and supports my point that this diet is not healthy”  “this survey revealed that obesity is on a rapid rise among all demographic groups and supports my view that obesity is epidemic”

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2c

2c. This source strongly supports my thesis that the current pattern of young adults remaining with family because they cannot afford independent living due to student loan obligations is having a negative effect on young adults developing self-sufficiency and individualism.

  1. If the information is “popular” or if it is from a blog, from a marketing site, or is persuasive in nature (i.e., an editorial or opinion piece, or a publication of a special interest group such as a trade organization, union, etc.) explain why you are using the source and why you cannot use a more substantive or scholarly source.

Source 1

Source 2

(Continue for as many sources as you have developed)

Example 2d

2d. This source is popular; it is used to show how public opinion was influenced by advertising.

Notes: Evaluating Sources

  1. In 2b, rate your journal and periodical sources (whether you are looking at hard copy or on-line) as scholarly, substantive or popular. The Table “Distinguishing between Scholarly and Non-scholarly Periodicals” will work for evaluating either print or on-line journals, newspapers, and periodicals.
  2. Beware of bias in any specific article. Determine if the source is authoritative, credible, reliable, current and unbiased.  (If not current, then information can be rated “valid, regardless of age,” — i.e., a 1999 web-based article on the American Civil War is not “current,” but can be “valid regardless of age.”)  All sources should be authoritative, credible, reliable, current and unbiased.  If bias is found, state if bias may or may not affect the credibility and reliability of the information you will use and how you will compensate for possible bias.
  3. For websites, generally speaking, .gov and .mil sites are acceptable sources in academic papers. Most .edu websites will be acceptable, but analyze under the criteria in 2 above.
  4. If the website is a .com, .org or .biz website, you must further evaluate for authority, reliability and credibility. Never use a .com, .org or .biz site without evaluating across these criteria. Be especially careful about blogs – generally speaking, don’t use them. Many newspaper and magazines also publish to websites; evaluate those just as you would a journal or periodical.
    1. Authoritative
      • Who are the author(s)?
      • Are they recognized experts in their field? – check the <About> column or google the author’s name?
      • What is the level of education of the author? Experience?  Knowledge of the subject?
      • Is the information at a level appropriate to an upper-level academic paper?
    2. Credible
      • How does the information compare to other, similar information? Always look for more than one source – verify that all points of view are represented
    3. Reliable
      • Is it timely?
      • Does it come from a trusted source?
