In your own words explain the reasoning behind the problem of induction and why it is a problem.

This is for my Philosophy Class… The problem of induction presents scientists (and everyone, actually!) with the epistemologically problematic notion that just because something happened consistently in the past does not mean it will necessarily happen in the future. In your own words explain the reasoning behind the problem of induction and why it is a problem. What does this mean for theories, laws, and predictions?

What is a miracle? Choose one of our readings on this topic to answer the question. Do you think that a belief in miracles, as you have defined it, is necessary in Judaism? Consider at least one objection to your view. The readings are uploaded. No outside citation.
The paper should be written double-spaced using a 12-point font. Your paper should not exceed the maximum page limit. All papers will be reviewed by turnitin.com.
The paper should have: 1) A brief introductory paragraph that sets out the problem and offers a thesis, i.e., the view (or solution) that you will argue for in the rest of the paper. 2) An argument that involves (a) the statement and analysis of the views of the relevant philosopher (or philosophers), and (b) includes some critical perspective on the text. (If you end up agreeing with one position, at least consider an objection to it; or if you disagree with it, at least consider a possible response to your objections.) And 3) a brief conclusion that states the balance of your argument and its possible implications. When you refer to the text, as you should to support your interpretation, please use a simple system of citation (e.g., you can cite the full reference (book and text) once in a footnote and then subsequent references can be page numbers in parentheses after the relevant passage). You can use whatever Bibliographic style you choose (MLA or Chicago, for instance), but please be consistent.
When grading, we shall look for the presence of these elements and weigh them as follows: a “fair” paper will show basic comprehension of the text; a “good” paper will show a nuanced comprehension of the text and have at least a weak and defensible thesis; a “very good” paper will show excellent comprehension of the text, have a strong and well defended thesis, and show some originality in argument. The approximate weight of the different components of the paper are roughly as follows: 60% explanation of the argument; 30% consideration of objections; and 10% structure of paper and style. These are rough percentages and the weight can vary somewhat in the calculation of the final grade. It always makes a difference how well the paper is written. That is, at a bare minimum we expect proper spelling and grammar, and at best we would hope to see papers that are clearly and elegantly written. Most papers have some elements and not others or some elements that are better than others. We will use our experienced judgment in determining the final grade in terms of the balance of these factors and their overall impact on the reader.

What does Confucius say about the importance of rites?

What does Confucius say about the importance of rites? How might communities and individuals today benefit from strong traditions (or rites)? Are those traditions necessarily damaging to the freedom of individuals?

Define logic and critical thinking.

  1. Define logic and critical thinking.
  2. Discuss how critical thinking is connected to logic.
  3. Elaborate on the benefits of using critical thinking to resolve ethical issues.
  4. What would be the result of using logical fallacies in an ethical argument?

Will you argue that Abortion or Euthanasia are ethical and allowable, or unethical?

For the large paper for Part 1, follow both the syllabus, and the paper writing guidelines to come up with an argumentative paper on one of the topics covered in the first part of the Hinman text, (chapters 1-5). Papers must have 1″ margins, and use a 12 pt. font.
Take one side of the topic/issue and argue from that position. Keep in mind to use the appropriate type of major ethical theory as the backup and foundation of your arguments. Will you argue that Abortion or Euthanasia are ethical and allowable, or unethical? Will you pick the Death Penalty? Will you argue from a Kantian position that all life is sacred, or from a utilitarian one where the best for the masses at large is considered most ethical.
Keep in mind that these papers are argumentative and will have several different claims to backup their position (a paper of this size has four or five paragraphs/claims that back up the thesis with one or two backups per claim). Also, the best of these papers will also find the most common argument against your position, and then shoot it down with backup from your position. This will greatly enhance your argument. For example, if you pick Abortion, and you are against it, then you would cite the most common argument about why those who are for abortion believe the way they do, and then refute that best pro-abortion position. Of course, you would have back-up for all of these positions.
You may “recycle” arguments that you have already used as your arguments (and even your responses) if you like.
This paper must be 3-5 pages long and have a minimum of 3 sources. One should be the book, and one should be philosophical in nature and the third can be for informational purposes, statistics etc. Use the syllabus and the paper writing guidelines on more about sourcing.

According to act-utilitarianism, which action is the morally right one? Do you agree with this choice? Why or why not?

Suppose you are an act-utilitarian, and you must choose between two courses of action. In the first action, you could make a stranger very happy by giving her $100. In the second action, you could make another stranger even happier by giving him the same amount of money—but this action would involve breaking a promise to a friend. According to act-utilitarianism, which action is the morally right one? Do you agree with this choice? Why or why not?

What are the best sources for finding participants who fit your criteria for inclusion in the sample?

• Regarding the research plan, address the following:
o What are the best sources for finding participants who fit your criteria for inclusion in the sample?
o Who do you need to contact to get permission to distribute your announcement?
o How do you choose information-rich cases?
• Regarding your practice interviews for the course, address the following:
o Brainstorm ideas for asking friends and/or family who could role-play the task of the interviewee sufficiently to provide a rich, detailed interview.

Outline your proposed interview procedures, providing justification of each procedure included in your list.

• Outline your proposed interview procedures, providing justification of each procedure included in your list. Be sure to consider and share your plan for the following:
o Who you are considering interviewing (Should we do victim’s and law enforcement officers?)
o Incorporation of the exact verbiage provided by the IRB’s Office of Research and Compliance
o The revised interview guide, which now includes the invitation, informed consent, introductory statement, the interview, and a concluding/closing statement
o In which format to conduct the interview (e-mail, phone, or in person), with a justification for your choice and inclusion of appropriate sources (referring to articles)
o Choosing and coordinating a peer debrief with one of your classmates, which can be by phone (preferably) or e-mail and will occur after you have collected your data
