Write a paper that supports one side or the other of the issue.

Over the eight weeks of the course, you will work on a paper that addresses a current controversial issue. This paper is to be in the form of an argument. You will select a topic, choose an issue related to that topic, thoroughly research both sides of the issue, and then write a paper that supports one side or the other of the issue. Your paper must define the issue, present evidence on both sides of the issue, and then argue that one side is stronger and more persuasive than the other. Your paper must address at least three relevant aspects of the issue. More specific directions for each part of the paper will be found within the specific assignment in the weekly modules.
For the assignment this week, address the following:
State the topic chosen from the list or topic approved by instructor.
State the specific issue you will explore.
This must be stated either as a question (“Should prostitution be legalized?”) or a whether-or-not statement (“Whether prostitution should be legalized”).
For the stated issue, state three (3) aspects of the issue that you think you will likely develop in your paper. Briefly state why you have chosen each aspect.
You are not confined to three aspects only, but you must develop at least three. As you develop your paper, you may find other aspects that you deem more relevant, and may add or substitute those.
Example: For the topic of prostitution, you might examine the aspect of personal autonomy, public health aspects, and law enforcement aspects, at a minimum.
Example: For the topic of free healthcare for undocumented persons, you might address economic aspects, ethical aspects, and public health aspects, at a minimum.

What does it mean for a sentence to be truth-functional?

Week 3 Study Guide
Answer the following seven questions about the reading and videos for the week. Write out your answers on a computer and then either upload the file or paste into the submission text box. Do not write directly into the text box because it doesn’t save your work. If you upload a file, only use doc, docx, pdf, or jpg.

1. For each of the five main logical operators: list the operator, identify it symbol, use the operator in a sentence. It can be hard to use logical operators online. The easiest way is to copy and paste from this list: (• v ⊃ ≡ -). If that doesn’t work, you can simply draw them out on paper and upload a photo along with the assignment.

2. Translate the following English sentences into formal language. Use the suggested constants to stand for the atomic propositions.
a. Either Bob will mop or Tom will mop. (B = Bob will mop; T = Tom will mop)
b. It is not the case that Bob is a burglar. (B = Bob is a burglar)
c. Either it will not rain on Monday or it will not rain on Tuesday. (M = It will rain on Monday; T = It will rain on Tuesday)
d. Tom does not like cheesecake. (T = Tom likes cheesecake)
e. Bob would like to have both a large cat and a small dog as a pet. (C = Bob would like to have a large cat as a pet; D = Bob would like to have a small dog as a pet)
f. Bob Saget is not actually very funny. (B = Bob Saget is very funny)

3. What does it mean for a sentence to be truth-functional? Why is this important for propositional logic? Give an example of a sentence that is not truth functional.

4. Use truth tables to show whether the following inferences are valid. It can be hard to format truth tables online. The easiest way is to make a table in your word processor. If that doesn’t work, you can simply draw out your answers on paper and upload a photo along with the assignment.

5. Is the following sentence true or false: “Kanye West is a frog; therefore, Kanye is married to Kendrick Lamar”? Translate this sentence into logic and then use a truth table to show your reasoning. What does this tell us about the truth of conditional statements?

6. What are the five valid argument forms discussed in 4.2? Give an example of each.

7. Do you find this type of formal logic interesting? Why or why not?

What is a “rational standard” (see PCT Ch. 1)? How and why does Socrates introduce it in his exchange with Euthyphro?

Part 1 (300-word minimum)
What is a “rational standard” (see PCT Ch. 1)? How and why does Socrates introduce it in his exchange with Euthyphro? In what way does it propel their conversation? What did you think of the dialogue once you understood it (cause, I’m sure, you read it multiple times until you did)? Having read Chapter One of The Power of Critical Thinking, what can Plato’s Euthyphro teach us about critical thinking and developing our own critical thinking skills (i.e., what is the relationship between the Euthyphro and what you get from reading Chapter One of Vaughn’s The Power of Critical Thinking)?
Part 2 (100-word minimum)
What do you make of the question concerning whether the Gods love a person because they are pious versus a person being pious because they are beloved by the Gods.

What is morality in any given time and place?

Use the following 2 starting points to develop your essay on morality and ethics:
The article by Jay Feldman: Sunday Dialogue: How Corporations Behave
Alfred North Whitehead’s controversial statement, “What is morality in any given time and place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like and immorality is what they dislike” (BrainyQuote, 2018).
Think about those two perspectives, and then select 1 of the focal questions in Part 1 of the assignment. Your response to the selected focal question will guide you to formulate a thesis statement.
Discuss the article and Whitehead’s statement in the introduction, body, and conclusion of the essay.
Locate and utilize at least 2 credible sources to support the arguments presented in your paper. Make sure you cite them appropriately within your paper, and list them in APA format on your Reference page.
Ensure that your paper is 4–5 pages in length, not counting the Title page and Reference page. In accordance with APA formatting requirements, your paper should include a Title and Reference page, should be double-spaced, and should include a running head and page numbers.
Part 1: Formulating the Philosophical Thesis Statement
Select only 1 of the following focal questions to answer to help formulate your thesis statement:

Businesses can have ethical standards, but businesses are not moral agents. Do you agree or disagree?
Is it true that the “bottom line” of a business is profit and profit alone?
In business, are there other, less tangible goals that are intrinsic to—and just as important as—making money?
In a business environment, why should people be moral as individuals?
Why should a corporation or organization be moral?
Could you apply the first formulation of Kant’s categorical imperative to a business environment?
Part 2: Developing the Essay
Identify your thesis statement (argument claim) within the introduction of your paper.
Conduct research using library resources. Please use the article presented above (Sunday Dialogue: How Corporations Behave) as well as 2 additional sources.
Outline your essay, considering deontological ethics, teleological ethics, moral objectivism, and ethical relativism in your argument.
Provide at least 3 valid reasons to support your argument. Remember to think critically here—there likely are reasons that may not be evident at first.
Also, be sure to include the following in your essay:
Use of explanations of philosophical concepts—such as utilitarianism, categorical imperatives, process philosophy, moral relativism, moral absolutism, ethical relativism, moral objectivism, deontological ethics, or teleological ethics—to structure your essay and provide evidence to support your claims.
Remember, you can use these concepts to argue for or against a particular statement (e.g., from a deontological perspective, something might be “right,” whereas that same thing may be “wrong” from a utilitarian perspective).
Your argument and reasons (claims) should be defended by philosophical concepts supported by evidence, which is based on your research.
Part 3: Conclusion

Consider morality and ethics from the perspective of Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy and Immanuel Kant’s universal categorical imperative. After conducting your research and writing your essay, could you conclude that businesses can have ethical standards, despite the fact that businesses are not moral agents? Explain why or why not. Sum up your argument based on the evidence presented in the paper.

Part 4: Review Checklist Before Submitting Essay
Your essay should be checked for proper use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
You may find that you change your mind on the issue as you are writing your paper. That is fine, but be sure to present your ultimate decision at the beginning of the paper, and stick to it consistently throughout. This may require that you go back and change paragraphs to support your changed thesis statement.
Your argument should be clear, concise, and supported with logically valid claims and evidence followed by APA in-text citations.
A Reference page documenting your sources should be included. Please use the article presented above (Sunday Dialogue: How Corporations Behave) as well as 2 additional sources.
Your paper must be 4–5 pages in length, not counting the Title page and Reference page. In accordance with APA formatting requirements, your paper should include a Title and Reference page, should be double-spaced, and should include a running head and page numbers.
