State the research topic of each of the three articles. Review and explain the research question(s) that guided the three research articles. Identify the independent and dependent variables of the research articles, Briefly describe the method used in each of the studies. Identify the measurement and experimental operational definitions for each of the articles,

How gender and age of person emotionally abused effects their ability to maintain healthy relationships.

INSTRUCTIONS
For this paper, you are asked to do several things.

First
Formatting is important in APA style. Your paper should:

  • have 1 inch margins,
  • be double spaced,
  • have page numbers in the upper right hand corner,
  • be typed in Times New Roman 12 point font.
  • Include a title page in APA format (see Stangor textbook, p. 297 & 314)

Second

  • Citing other people’s work is important. You should also include: a reference page in APA format (see Stangor textbook, p. 307 & 330), and cite your articles in the text according to APA format, (see Stangor textbook, p. 298).

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to get you to think about your own research idea and see how other people have examined related topics.

To do this we want you to: state a narrowed conceptual hypothesis for YOUR research topic, locate THREE research articles that are related to your research topic and hypothesis, and write a summary and critique of each article.

The articles MUST be empirically based.
In other words, the articles must describe a true experimental design with at least one manipulated independent variable. This means that correlational studies, meta-analyses, book chapters, and secondary summary articles (i.e., review articles) are not acceptable.

If you are unsure if your articles meet this requirement you should ask your instructor. (Don’t wait until the last minute to e-mail, as the instructor might not have time to reply, and if there are problems with the articles, you might not have time to find new ones.)

You Should
State YOUR research topic and hypothesis and how these three articles are relevant.
State the research topic of each of the three articles
Review and explain the research question(s) (or hypotheses) that guided the three research articles,
Identify the independent and dependent variables of the research articles,
Briefly describe the method used in each of the studies,
Identify the measurement and experimental operational definitions (i.e., identify how the researchers operationalized the independent and dependent variable) for each of the articles,
Describe the results and conclusions. If one of your articles has more than one study, you only need to summarize the study that is the most relevant to your hypothesis.
Give your opinion about the research (e.g., criticisms or questions about the research, experimental design, ect., or ideas about other interesting research questions not addressed in the article).

Importantly, however, here you must also think specifically about how each research article informs your thinking about your hypothesis.
Give a summary of how the three articles combine to inform your thinking, and describe very briefly (one paragraph should be enough detail) what you plan to do for your research proposal (e.g. tell me what your 2 independent variables will be, and what your dependent variable will be).

Explain what ARDS is. Explain what is significant with her lab results using the ABG normal values and the nursing mnemonic ROME which was also referenced in week #2 of this course. Explain what an appropriate treatment would be.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

Answer the following questions about the respiratory system, using the included case study, for this week’s discussion.

  • Explain what ARDS is.
  • Explain what is significant with her lab results using the ABG normal values and the nursing mnemonic ROME which was also referenced in week #2 of this course.
  • Explain what an appropriate treatment would be.

Case Study

Mrs. Breathless is a 43-year-old female, just getting off the late shift. She reports to the ER in the early morning with shortness of breath. She has cyanosis of the lips. She has had a productive cough for 2 weeks. Her temperature is 102.2, blood pressure 110/76, heart rate 108, respiration 32, rapid and shallow. Breath sounds are diminished in both bases, with coarse rhonchi in the upper lobes. Chest X-ray indicates bilateral pneumonia.

ABG (Arterial Blood Gases) Lab results are:

  • pH= 7.44
  • PaCO2= 28
  • HCO3= low
  • PaO2= 54

Note: rhonchi are continuous low pitched rattling lung sounds that often resemble snoring or wheezes.

Problems:

  • PaCO2 is low.
  • pH is on the high side of normal, therefore compensated respiratory alkalosis.
  • Also, PaO2 is low, probably due to mucous displacing air in the alveoli affected by the pneumonia.

Synthesize findings across three papers and evaluate how each article contributes to our overall understanding of the research question as a whole. Critically evaluate, and synthesise published research in cognitive and biological psychology and critically discuss and integrate knowledge across multiple approaches in cognitive and biological psychology.

Biological and Cognitive Psychology

Description of Assessment

Coursework 3

In coursework three, you will be completing a literature review. You will synthesize findings across three papers and evaluate how each article (and method) contributes to our overall understanding of the research question as a whole.  The aim is to review, critically evaluate, and synthesise published research in cognitive and biological psychology and critically discuss and integrate knowledge across multiple approaches in cognitive and biological psychology. The module learning outcome two will be assessed through the completion CW3, which is a 2,000-word essay.

Summary of Assessment Method:  Literature review

Assesses Learning Outcomes:

  1. critically discuss and integrate knowledge across multiple approaches in cognitive and biological psychology.
  • review, critically evaluate and synthesise published research in cognitive and biological psychology.

Content and detailed guidance

You will need to devise a research question relevant to one of the topics below:

  • Communication
  • Addictive behaviours: Choose Addictive Behaviour

The research question is:  Are individuals with addictive behaviour demonstrate strong responses to drug clues through a learning process compared to other group populations?

  • Emotion and stress
  • Intelligence and thought

The research question that you choose should have been explored using a range of different quantitative research methods (e.g, electrophysiological measures, neurophysiological measures, and behavioural measures). No articles should use Qualitative research. You will need to perform a search for relevant articles that have sought to address the research question that you devise.

Based on the articles you find during the search you will need to select three original research studies (not review papers or meta-analyses). Each article should use a different research method to help answer your research question. For each paper, you should provide a critical review. Specifically, you should:

  • explain the key features of the study
  • discuss its implications
  • evaluate the methods used

You should then synthesise the findings across the three papers and evaluate how each article (and method) contributes to our overall understanding of the research question as a whole. The more successful literature reviews will be those which explain how different research methods (eg, EEG and fMRI) relate to one another and contribute to the overall understanding of the research question.

Determine and illustrate age-appropriate approaches to addictions counseling and treatment for each age group. Compare and contrast the treatment similarities and differences for each group.

Addictions Counseling

The impact of addiction is intense for any individual regardless of age. As psychology professionals have become more focused upon the growing elder adult population, it has become evident that even seniors are not exempt from the challenges of addictive behavior.

Differentiate addiction across the lifespan for adolescent, early adult, middle adult, and elder adult populations, and distinguish specific treatment techniques most appropriate for specific lifespan perspectives. Your Discussion should include consideration of the specific population characteristics of each age group, normal developmental issues and concerns, and age-appropriate experiences that may directly contribute to addiction behavior.

Determine and illustrate age-appropriate approaches to addictions counseling and treatment for each age group. Compare and contrast the treatment similarities and differences for each group.

Analyse the facts and opinions within the article, considering the background, career, education, or any other relevant aspects of the author/s origins and potential motivations behind them. Elaborate on the research and writing from the students submitted scaffold in assessment 1a, paying attention to the feedback from the tutor. Write an analysis of the potential impact on readers of the article, thinking about the demographic the media is targeted at, and the impact of how the article may be perceived by its readers.

Assessment 1 Part B Details and Instructions

Purpose

The purpose of this task is for students to critically analyse a media article. This analysis uses the same article from assessment 1a, building upon the material in the student’s scaffold. This task requires students to demonstrate their understanding of the content of the article and the discourses (what is discourse?) within this, analysing these with references to Unit content materials and academic readings.

Process

To complete this task students are expected to incorporate relevant course content and wider authoritative sources from the ACAP library:

1. Students will use the same media article from assessment 1a.

2. Analyse the facts and opinions within the article, considering the background, career, education, or any other relevant aspects of the author/s origins and potential motivations behind them. Elaborate on the research and writing from the students submitted scaffold in assessment 1a, paying attention to the feedback from the tutor.

3. Write an analysis of the potential impact on readers of the article, thinking about the demographic the media is targeted at, and the impact of how the article may be perceived by its readers.

4. Support the writing with at least six relevant academic references (this means academic articles in addition to any media articles).

Write out a role-play conversation between the partners in which they make use of effective verbal and nonverbal communication strategies to discuss getting tested for and the possibility of getting treated for STIs.

Effective Communication in Intimate Relationships

Imagine a scenario in which two partners are discussing getting tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In this scenario, the partners demonstrate through discussion their understanding of the symptoms of STIs, the methods used to test for STIs, and the way in which STIs are treated as well as their capacity to engage in effective communication with one another about this sensitive topic.

Write out a role-play conversation between the partners in which they make use of effective verbal and nonverbal communication strategies (including active listening, “I” statements, and emotional validation) to discuss getting tested for and the possibility of getting treated for STIs. At the end of your role play, produce a brief, 1-paragraph summary of how effective communication was used.

Your script must be at least 650 words long. Your script should demonstrate accurate knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases, and how to test for them as well as knowledge of communication strategies. Use at least 2 references to support your work.

If you would like, you may write a script for a couple that differs from your personal experience (culturally or in terms of orientation, for example) or even write a script detailing how you would convince two clients of yours to get tested.
