Review one or more ethical codes and/or laws related to the area of psychology you want to pursue. Consider how well (or not) your “personal mission statement” and future career plans connect to scripture and ethical principles in working with others.

Personal application of ethics (Module 7)

For this discussion, review one or more ethical codes and/or laws related to the area of psychology you want to pursue. If you aren’t sure yet, you can just choose any you MIGHT would be interested in. You will also need to refer to the mission and vision assignments you did earlier in the course.

For your discussion, consider how well (or not) your “personal mission statement” and future career plans connect to scripture and ethical principles in working with others. Share with the class how you believe your mission statement and future goals fit with the established codes and scripture, and what ethical challenges or dilemmas you might face. You may even want to edit your mission and vision as part of this discussion and share that here.

MY MISSION STATEMENT
My mission statement is to constantly strive to be the best version of myself – to live with ambition, integrity, and unconditional love. To maintain a healthy lifestyle with family, friends, and my physical and emotional well-being. To continue to inspire, thrive, and succeed in life while being a positive voice and inspiration to others. To aid others in their emotional and psychological development and be a helping hand to others. To remain trustworthy, believable, and dependable to my clients and all mankind.

Do university students undertaking first year psychology show similar scores on a measure of depression, anxiety and stress compared to control participants? Does participation in eight sessions of a brief mindfulness exercise effect depression, anxiety and stress scores in university students undertaking first year psychology?

Assessment 1: Lab Report

The aim of this laboratory study is to investigate whether participation for eight days in a brief mindfulness intervention alters depression, anxiety and stress levels in university students. We have collected data during two classes, and in between you have been asked to undertake a 10 minute (brief) mindfulness exercise each day, focussing on your breathing. You should have also collected data from one participant who has not undertaken the mindfulness program. The collected data will be analysed and written up in the form of a laboratory report.

Background
Mindfulness describes the practise of paying non-judgemental and accepting attention to what is happening in the present moment. Mindfulness therapies are designed to guide a person to direct their attention specifically towards what is happening “right now”, and moving the mind back towards the present should it drift. It has its roots in Eastern religious practises, and is often used to induce deep relaxation. This type of therapy has grown substantially in recent times and is widely researched and used by psychologists to treat a diverse range of disorders. This picture provides a good illustration of mindfulness (from http://www.transition.hw.ac.uk/mindfulness/). In this research activity, we will investigate whether participation in eight sessions of a 10 minute mindfulness exercise affects scores on a questionnaire that measures symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Outcomes will be compared both before (at baseline) and after (post-mindfulness) students have taken part in the exercise. Baseline student data will also be compared to results collected from a community sample who have not specifically undertaken mindfulness (control data). This will allow us to assess whether our student cohort started the program at levels of depression, anxiety and stress that are equal to, lower, or higher than the community sample.

Research Questions
1. Do university students undertaking first year psychology show similar scores on a measure of depression, anxiety and stress compared to control participants?
2. Does participation in eight sessions of a brief mindfulness exercise effect depression, anxiety and stress scores in university students undertaking first year psychology?

What do you agree/disagree with? Why? What conclusions can you draw from your reading? Was the research conducted adequately? How could methodology be improved? What questions related to your topic remain unanswered? What theoretical perspective addresses this topic suitably?

Your paper should be at least 6 pages and no more than 8 pages (excluding references) long. Do not resort to large font sizes (no more than 12 c.p.i.) and wide margins (no more than 1 inch on all sides) to extend the length of your paper. Points will be subtracted for such submissions. A hard copy of your paper (with two journal articles that your paper is based on) is due before midnight of May 2nd in the specified assignment drop box of D2L.

Follow APA guidelines when citing authors in the body of your paper or see handout. No cover page is necessary nor is an abstract. Use the following headers to organize your paper.

– (a) Introduction. A page or so that clearly and concisely describes the topic of your paper, any relevant statistics, the questions you will investigate, and the various points of view or differing explanations proposed in the scientific articles on which you are basing your paper. You may consult several sources (books, web resources, magazines, journal articles or monographs) for the introduction, and are strongly encouraged to include a cross-national statistic or diversity focus.

– (b) Research. This is the core of the paper (3-5 pages suggested) that must include a discussion of the scientific evidence you have reviewed. Remember, the research gathered from two journal articles is presented in this section. It is important that you provide your understanding of the research work that has been conducted. In other words, paraphrase in your own words and not rely on quotes. To effectively use the contents of the journal articles to support your ideas, be sure to clearly describe (1) the topic of the research being reported, (2) the research methodology (instruments used, sample, procedure, research design used), (3) the conclusions and questions that the study raised.

– (c) Evaluation. This section is primarily based on your own opinions and ideas, based on the research you have read and various theoretical perspectives that may be relevant (1-2 pages). In other words, critique the journal articles. What do you agree/disagree with? Why? What conclusions can you draw from your reading? Was the research conducted adequately? How could methodology be improved? What questions related to your topic remain unanswered? What theoretical perspective addresses this topic suitably?

– (d) References. All sources used for your paper (books, magazines, journals, film, etc.) should be listed alphabetically at the end in a manner that is consistent with the APA manual (7th edition). See ‘Writing Resources’ on D2L.

Explain the behavior being studied – what is the thing this study is looking at? What do we already know about this behavior or ability? Explain the study in detail. What is this specific study looking at? What is their hypothesis (in your own words) and what is their methodology?

Developmental Psychology

Make sure to pick a suggested theory in the file uploaded below. Also make sure to cite the sources correctly and DO NOT use a website as a source. Use a peer reviewed article or something of the sort, and cite accordingly in APA style. There are 3 different sections to categorize by, please do so according to the file uploaded, and make sure to respond to the 3 numbered questions shown at the end of each description of the section. For the first section questions to respond to are,

1. Overview of the theory – what is the main point, what is some of the terminology used?

2. How does the theory deal with abilities at different ages and how does it account for change over time? That is, why are we talking about this as a theory of development (as opposed to biology or social psych)?

3. What is one positive aspect of the theory, or one thing the theory accounts for that is important and useful? What is one negative aspect of the theory, or one critique of the theory, something it doesn’t do or can’t account for? For section 2 the questions are,

  1. Explain the behavior being studied – what is the thing this study is looking at? What do we already know about this behavior or ability?
  2. Explain the study in detail. What is this specific study looking at? What is their hypothesis (in your own words) and what is their methodology? Give the independent and dependent variables.
  3. Explain the findings. Discuss both the raw results (e.g. what groups did better, when did the ability appear), as well as the general findings and conclusion.

4. Create a take-home message and why these results are important and relevant for a) understanding the behavior at hand generally, and b) for development and the general population/outside this class. For the last and final section 3, the questions are,

  1. Does this theory explain the behavior/study? It does not matter which side you take as long as you support your answer. Do not argue for both sides – pick either yes or no.
  2. Clearly explain two unique reasons why your theory and behavior fit together OR why they do not. If you are stuck on finding two reasons, here are some suggestions/helpful questions to ponder: Does the theory account for change over time (development) in the particular behavior? Would the theory predict the results of this study, or hypothesize the same thing as the authors? What rationale would this theory give for the findings of the study?
  3. Give a conclusion that gives a take-home message and conveys the overall relevance of this theory/study. This should (in some ways) answer the question “Why should your mom/sister/roommate/grandpa care?” or “What can this approach/theory to this study/behavior tell us that is helpful (to either consider or to avoid)?”

Apply knowledge of theory associated with culture and cultural groups and (hypothetically) apply it to a group in such a way that is plausible, and likely to help the group succeed in collective-action and socio-cultural problems.

Socio-cultural problems

In this essay, students will apply their knowledge of theory associated with culture and cultural groups and (hypothetically) apply it to a group in such a way that is plausible, and likely to help the group succeed in collective-action and socio-cultural problems.
