Write an essay analysing one emotion from three different theoretical perspectives. Identify the main principals of a theory and use them to imagine and speculate how different theories would approach the same phenomena.

Emotions Module

The task is to write an essay analysing one emotion from three different theoretical perspectives.

This is a theoretical essay. The propose of this essay is that you learn to identify the main principals of a theory and use them to imagine and speculate how different theories would approach the same phenomena, in this case, a specific emotion.

The three theories that you will combine in your essay will be covered on the lectures and are: The Social Construction of Emotions (Harré, 1986), Theories of Affect (Massumi, 2002; Clough, 2007; Lara 2020), and the Theories of Feelings (Cromby & Willis, 2016). You will use these theories to analyse your chosen emotion from these three different perspectives.

Your emotion options are: Happiness, Love or Hate.

Re-evaluate the ‘classic’ bystander studies that are still prevalent in social psychology textbooks. Describe the original studies on bystander behaviour to help generate a critical discussion around the sociocultural context of Kitty Genovese’s murder which led to the research.

Critically evaluate the extent to which bystander behaviour has shaped social psychology theory and research.

For this essay, consider the historical and cultural context of ‘moral panics’ regarding bystander non-intervention. The story of the ‘Good Samaritan’ tells us something about the time it was reconstructed in later years– the Samaritan helped because he was good and out of the ordinary with ‘normal’ people not helping.

For the substantive part of the essay, you are asked to re-evaluate the ‘classic’ bystander studies that are still prevalent in social psychology textbooks. These studies highlight the dangers of the group and how the presence of others can undermine the bonds of neighbourly concern. The theoretical assumptions and findings of these studies have, until relatively recently, remained unchallenged by psychologists.

You should describe the original studies on bystander behaviour to help generate a critical discussion around the sociocultural context of Kitty Genovese’s murder which led to the research. You should consider the extent to which key features of the murder were selected and less relevant details dropped at the time to reflect this. You might evaluate the ecological validity of the original studies.

You can describe contemporary bystander studies, which focus on more recent events, so that you might draw parallels with the original work. You can include research which has examined social and institutional environments to help frame your argument.

You might consider the extent to which methods adopted by social psychologists reinforce the notion that society compromises of individuals, such as the bystander experiments

Demonstrate the ability to report results from advanced statistical techniques in the most effective way, in APA format. Possess a systematic understanding of the logic behind several advanced and/or specialised quantitative statistical methods. Demonstrate initiative in the selection of appropriate statistical tests and the use of appropriate software for analysis.

Quantitative Research Methods

This is a Essay of a quantitative research method

A report in APA style conveying analyses you will perform on a dataset provided to you. The report will include a brief introduction, methods,a detailed analysis and results section, and a brief discussion.

The clearer, more sensible and better structured your report, the better the mark. If you report very simple analyses and results, the mark will not be high. If you report more complicated analyses providing a better explanation/description of the data, your mark will likely be higher. If you just include nonsense in your results, the mark will be low. It is important that you make the most of the data you have, giving the best explanations you can provide.

Intended learning outcomes for the assessment

Demonstrate the ability to report results from advanced statistical techniques in the most effective way, in APA format.

Possess a systematic understanding of the logic behind several advanced and/or specialised quantitative statistical methods.

Demonstrate initiative in the selection of appropriate statistical tests and the use of appropriate software for analysis.

Analyse a wide range of quantitative data.

Plan and deliver a professional presentation of research in an appropriate academic style.

Conduct a basic search of the literature to identify relevant research articles that will help to formulate a proposal for such a follow-up research project. Using the prompts provided as a guide, students should then write a brief introduction and method section, in which a new study is proposed building on the research outlined in the article chosen.

Guided Research Proposal

Guided Research Proposal requires students to use the SAME research article they used for Assessment 2. Students will first identify a suggestion for follow-up research given by the authors of the article they have chosen. Then, students will conduct a basic search of the literature to identify relevant research articles that will help them to formulate a proposal for such a follow-up research project. Using the prompts provided as a guide, students should then write a brief introduction and method section, in which a new study is proposed building on the research outlined in the article chosen.

As this is likely the first time students have encountered such a style of assessment, Assessment 4 is guided, with students asked to respond to a series of questions. The goal here is to develop fundamental skills that will enable students to prepare and produce research reports and proposal documents in level 200 psychology units and above within their degree.

What method(s) of data collection would be most appropriate to measure the behavior defined in the scenario? Provide a rationale as to why the chosen method(s) of data collection would be most appropriate? What, if any, limitation does this data collection method have?

Discussion post 4

Be sure to identify either A or B in your Discussion Post Title.

Identify the dependent variable(s) in the case.

What method(s) of data collection would be most appropriate to measure the behavior defined in the scenario? Provide a rationale as to why the chosen method(s) of data collection would be most appropriate? What, if any, limitation does this data collection method have?

How would you account for reliability and validity of your measurement procedures?

Create a set of hypothetical data (using 8 – 10 data points) to align with the scenario and create a basic graphical representation that aligns with APA conventions for one set of behavioral data. Save your graph as a PDF document and attach it to the discussion posting.

CASE STUDY B: Sarina

Sarina is a 6-year-old who engages in non-compliant behavior and physical aggression. These behaviors are evident both at home and at school. Frequently, when given a direction to complete a task, Sarina will refuse to comply, shouting things such as “No!” or “I don’t feel like doing that!” When her parents or staff attempt to redirect her non-compliance, she will become physically aggressive and attempt to hit or kick others. She has also been observed throwing objects and destroying property when she gets upset under these circumstances. Sarina’s aggressive behavior has caused minor injuries to both classmates and her younger brother.

Playground equipment is popular both in and out of doors. Design a playground that would encourage activities considered to be appropriate to motor development while ensuring maximum safety for children of all age ranges. You can design this by drawing or using a web program (pulling images from the internet etc.). You aren’t graded on your drawing but rather your creativity in design.

Include a write up detailing 5 ways your design is supported with information from your text based on physical development.
