Define social comparison. How do we use it on a daily basis? What is the difference between upward and downward comparison, give an example of each? What is the most helpful type of social comparison for discovering how you fit in any particular situation? How does this connect with the concept of self-esteem?

Self-esteem

Self-esteem is the evaluation of our self-concept. We often think that high self-esteem is beneficial and although it often is, there is a dark side. When high self-esteem mixes with narcissism it can be an issue. An interesting study done by Bushman & Baumeister (1998) demonstrates how these individuals react to insult (See below). The results suggest that contrary to our beliefs these individuals aren’t suffering from low self-esteem, and they are hiding it with an over-inflated sense of self. They evaluate themselves highly and are narcissistic. What do you believe are the consequences based on the findings for society? Do you think our focus on self (selfies, social media) is increasing narcissism? What could we do to combat the rising narcissism?

Analyze an Issue or Event in Diversity Through the Lenses of History and the Humanities.

Final Project Milestone Two

Analyze an Issue or Event in Diversity Through the Lenses of History and the Humanities.

What are some key attributes of the historical lens, and what do they reveal about diversity? How do historical events affect how we currently perceive diversity in the past?

Assignment: Narrated Journal

The Diversity Paradox: Immigration and the Color Line In Twenty-First Century America, Chapter 1 Challenges of Diversity: Essays on America, Introduction

While the readings this week are both American-focused and focused on specific aspects of diversity, they help illustrate how the lens of history can help us understand diversity and related issues. These readings also demonstrate the interconnectedness of the four lenses, as you will encounter facets of the other lenses in these articles. As you read this module’s selections, consider:

• What are some key attributes of the historical lens, and what do they reveal about diversity?

• How do historical events affect how we currently perceive diversity in the past?

You will choose one segment from the series linked below to focus on for the Module Three Assignment. This is Life with Lisa Ling.

Describe the key philosophies of the counseling profession: wellness, resilience, and prevention. Explain how the wellness model impacts the way in which counselors view clients and the concerns brought to counseling.

Professional Development Plan

This assignment is designed to start you on the journey of intentionally planning your professional development and career trajectory. Find at least two articles related to professional identity, key philosophies, and technology within addiction counseling. With these articles and your Internet research on state licensure or certification requirements from

Unit 2, prepare a 4-5 page paper that includes the six components listed below. Note that the assignment components are to be written in third person unless otherwise noted. Also, all components should be grounded in the literature and Web sites used in Unit 2, and cited in APA format. The final page should be your specific plan for professional development.

1. Describe the key philosophies of the counseling profession: wellness, resilience, and prevention. Explain how the wellness model impacts the way in which counselors view clients and the concerns brought to counseling.

2. Articulate the roles and characteristics of an effective professional counselor for at least two different professional roles.

3. Compare and contrast two professional counseling associations, such as NAADAC and the ACA, and assess how these organizations can help in a counselor’s professional development.

4. Describe what you learned about your state licensure and certification requirements and how your planned coursework does or does not meet these requirements. What steps will you need to take independently from your degree program in order to complete any licensure or certification goals you have?

5. Considering the rise of technology in modern society, evaluate how technology might affect your clinical practice, assist you in creating innovative solutions, and optimize your performance.

6. State your ultimate goal in your career trajectory. Based on what you learned in Unit 2, discuss a timeline of how you will meet this goal. What kind of training and certifications would be helpful? What kind of resources in your state will you need to consider? Summarize your future professional development steps and your timeline to complete them.

Discuss the broader implications often associated with the term plasticity.

Neural Plasticity and Cognitive Development

Before responding to this discussion, watch the following video, and then read the article on Neural Plasticity and Cognitive Development.

The Science of Brain Plasticity – Dr. Merzenich

Stiles, J. (2000). Neural Plasticity and Cognitive Development. Developmental Neuropsychology, 18(2), 237-272.

Some researchers argue that brain plasticity is more than just reorganization in response to injury, but rather that it also is a fundamental process in normal brain development and cognitive functioning (Stiles, 2000). Stiles used plasticity to refer to the complex interaction of neural development and input from the environment to create functional patterns in the brain. Plasticity is seen as the mechanism for active (rather than passive) neural development. In this post, you will discuss the broader implications often associated with the term plasticity.

Compare and contrast Piaget’s, Vygotsky’s, and the Information Processing theory’s approach to the mechanisms of cognitive change.

Cengage Learning

Compare and contrast Piaget’s, Vygotsky’s, and the Information Processing theory’s approach to the mechanisms of cognitive change (i.e., Piaget: disequilibrium, cognitive conflict, equal-status peer discussion, change through self-discovery, opportunities to practice new schema; Vygotsky: guidance by more knowledgeable person in ZPD assisting with things child can’t do independently, increasing internalization of self-guidance, reliance; Information Processing: selective attention, automaticity/fluency; transfer of skills, metacognition).
