What can we do aside from political efforts or major social/societal changes to help those of low-SES stay healthy?

When discussing Cardiovascular Disease ,we have learned there are many disparities between people of higher and lower Socioeconomic Status (SES) in terms of resources, stressors, and outcomes (e.g. higher mortality).Read the following journal article from Current Directions in Psychological Science:

Socioeconomic status and health: What is the role of reserve capacity?

Then, answer the following questions:

a. What is reserve capacity? How does it relate to health outcomes? (In other words what is the main point of the article?)

b. Use an example to explain in your own words how reserve capacity can help buffer the negative effects that low Socioeconomic Status has on health.

On page 271, the authors state that “a conceptual limitation of the literature is the focus on a single factor [perceived control or social support]. What is the problem with only looking at one factor?

As a society, we sometimes make efforts to address socioeconomic status in order to improve the overall health of the population. What are the benefits of this “prevention” focus? What are the drawbacks? Think in terms of both economics and health for individuals, the taxpaying public, and health insurance purchasers.

What can we do aside from political efforts or major social/societal changes to help those of low-SES stay healthy?

How were the studies were carried out (methods)? What have the findings been?

Theories and Methods
First, find three journal articles that are actual studies (not review articles, background information, etc.) that are from your field of interest.

Discuss what research questions have been asked in your field. How were the studies were carried out (methods)? What have the findings been? What questions still remain? NOTE: For the articles that you find for this section, don’t write about each one separately. Rather, synthesize the information.

Next, propose your own study to answer a specific research question from your chosen field. What is your research question? Be as specific as possible.

Why is this an important question or area to study? What are two specific hypotheses stemming from your research question?

Finally, discuss the specific research methods needed to answer your research question. Give some detail. Why is this the best method to use? What kind data will you collect? What is / are your IV(s) and DV (if applicable)?

What theorist and their theoretical perspective in Psychology explains your topic? – “link those elements to your topic”

Learning Styles

The paper will consist of a 1 Page Essay (single space) on the selected topic. The essay will include the Title Page and a Body Page.

No in-text citations in the body of the paper or References Page are needed. Students are encouraged to save an additional electronic copy of your assignments to avoid losing or damaging the final results.

In the body of your paper, each student should incorporate terms from the textbook demonstrating a smooth transition in your writing and maintain professional undertone.

For scholarly information regarding your topic,  refer to Coastal Pines Technical College’s on-line electronic library GALILEO.

Your 1 page Essay must fully address each of these questions:

1) An introduction of the topic (history, background)

2) How does your topic effect one’s crystallized or fluid intelligence. How does both change with age?

3) How does ones environment influence your topic?

4) What theorist and their theoretical perspective in Psychology explains your topic? – “link those elements to your topic”

5) What societal changes affect the emergence of this topic?

6) Discuss the roles of genes, parents, peers and culture on your topic.

Describe the measurement method (specific standardized scale or behavior/thought tracking method) used to evaluate client change.

EVALUATION EMPIRICALLY-BASED SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE
In this paper you will describe the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of your intervention plan with your client.

Your paper, including references, should be double-spaced, APA style. Use the major headings below (Introduction, Implementation and Monitoring, Evaluation, Conclusion).

Your paper will be approximately 8-10 pages long (EXCLUDING title page and reference page, and progress notes).

Introduction

Briefly restate who the client is, what the objective is, and what the planned intervention is.

Describe what source(s) you used as the basis of the specific intervention activities (for example, a treatment manual, an article, a website, a book, an agency protocol) and why you chose this source

Implementation and Monitoring

Maintain regular progress notes (typed) using the handout on the instructor’s website.

Progress notes need to be completed at least once per week. Do not include any client identifying information in the notes. Attach the progress notes to the end of your paper

Based on the progress notes, describe whether the intervention as implemented deviated from the intervention plan (yes or no), and if so, why.

Based on the progress notes, describe the client’s progress over the course of treatment
Evaluation

Describe the measurement method (specific standardized scale or behavior/thought tracking method) used to evaluate client change.

Provide the results of the client’s pretest and posttest.

Was the client’s objective achieved? (yes or no). If no, what do you and the client think were the barriers to achieving it?

Submit the completed client satisfaction questionnaire. Describe your reflections on the client’s responses.

Conclusion
Describe what you learned in this course and how you do or do not see yourself using this material in your future practice.

Identify client strengths, and explain how you would utilize strengths throughout treatment.

Use a differential diagnosis process and analysis of the Mental Status Exam in the case provided by your instructor to determine if the case meets the criteria for a clinical diagnosis.

Assignment: Submit a 4- to 5-page paper in which you:

Provide the full DSM-5 diagnosis. Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may need clinical attention).

Explain the full diagnosis, matching the symptoms of the case to the criteria for any diagnoses used.

Identify 2–3 of the close differentials that you considered for the case and have ruled out. Concisely explain why these conditions were considered but eliminated.

Identify the assessments you recommend to validate treatment.

Explain the rationale behind choosing the assessment instruments to support, clarify, or track treatment progress for the diagnosis.

Explain your recommendations for initial resources and treatment.

Use scholarly resources to support your evidence-based treatment recommendations.

Explain how you took cultural factors and diversity into account when making the assessment and recommending interventions.

Identify client strengths, and explain how you would utilize strengths throughout treatment.

Explain any cultural considerations that you need to take into account when working with this population or the particular presenting problem.

Discuss how the Code of Ethics applies when working with this particular presenting problem and population.

Explain how you would apply a trauma-informed lens when working with this population.

Describe the interventions discussed in the articles and explain how they addressed the psychosocial issues and needs of the individuals affected by the trauma.

Evidence-Based Interventions Used in Trauma

To prepare: Read the DSM-5 section on trauma and stressor-related disorders and review the Learning Resources on PTSD, disaster response, and trauma.

Then search the literature for studies related to an evidence-based intervention used to treat those suffering from trauma and stressor-related issues. Specifically, locate the following:

One study on treating symptoms resulting from a national traumatic event (e.g., natural disaster, mass shooting)

One study on treating symptoms resulting from an interpersonal trauma (e.g., rape, childhood sexual molestation, domestic violence)

Assignment: Post the APA references for the two studies you located.

Provide a brief description of the traumatic events, including a summary of how they affected the individuals involved.

Describe the interventions discussed in the articles and explain how they addressed the psychosocial issues and needs of the individuals affected by the trauma.

Explain the effectiveness of the interventions, as stated in the articles.

Analyze and discuss the similarities and differences in the individuals’ needs depending on whether the issues occurred due to a national traumatic event or an interpersonal trauma.
