In the field of psychology, just about everything is controversial, and you’ll need to develop your ability to look at things from multiple perspectives. Do disparities exist between diverse groups? Are certain diverse groups exposed to more negative results than others? Whether you agree or disagree with a particular stance, it’s important to not just understand the evidence being used to support the argument, but to be conversant in it and weigh it with other arguments and evidence.

This assessment asks you to choose a position and then prepare to support it as if you were going to participate in a debate. Preparing for debates is a way of steeping oneself in a topic and all the evidence available. While there won’t be an actual debate in the assessment, the act of preparing for one gives you in-depth practice at building arguments, counterarguments, and rebuttals that you only get a start at when writing a short paper.

This activity builds on critical thinking skills.

Choose a position and then prepare to support it, using the Debate Preparation and Summary Worksheet, as if you were going to participate in a debate.

In the worksheet, present your position and arguments for the debate topic, counter arguments to your position and arguments, and rebuttals to those counterarguments. The worksheet will finish with a conclusion on the strength of your position. Before submitting the worksheet, be sure to review the assessment scoring guide to ensure that you meet all criteria, including the following:

Your position.
At least three well-developed arguments.
Evidence to support your arguments (that is, data and research), including how the evidence supports the arguments Counterarguments to your points.
Evidence to support your rebuttals (data and research), including how the evidence supports the rebuttals.
A conclusion that asserts why your position is strong.
In-text citations and references for all sources of information.

What is the theoretical background for your study? That is, what has previous research about this topic shown, and what possible explanations can be found in the literature that might help you predict what the outcome will be?

Use APA format.

Your title should identify the actual variables or theoretical issues that you investigated. It should convey the main idea of your study in no more than 10-12 words.

ABSTRACT (5 points)

Your abstract should be a brief, comprehensive summary of your paper. It should concisely describe the following: the research problem, the participants, the procedure, the major finding, and the conclusions and implications, all in less than 250 words. The abstract is on its own page, following the title page.

INTRODUCTION (35 points)

Move from the general to the specific.

What is the major issue being investigated? Why is the problem interesting?

What is the theoretical background for your study? That is, what has previous research about this topic shown, and what possible explanations can be found in the literature that might help you predict what the outcome will be? Make sure the articles you cite are relevant to the study at hand and that you explain explicitly how they are linked to your study.

What are the limitations of the previous work (that make further work necessary)?

What knowledge can be gained from the current work?

What is the major question (restated)?

How (broadly stated) will this knowledge be gained? (overview of how you’ll address the research questions – not details)

What are the specific hypotheses being tested?

Should be between 5 and 8 pages

METHOD (15 points)

Participants.

What would the ideal participants look like? Explain both the demographic information (total number of participants, age range and mean age, gender breakdown, other relevant descriptions of your sample) and the method of selection (how were participants selected, how were they assigned to conditions if there were multiple conditions, etc.)

Apparatus/ Materials.

Describe any apparatus or materials that would be used.

How would they be constructed? How would they be used in the experiment?

Samples of stimuli (or questionnaire items) should be included. These examples may be presented in a table, if appropriate. Complete lists of stimuli (or complete forms of questionnaires) should be included in an Appendix.

Procedure.

Summarize each step in the data gathering procedure. Be sure to include:

Complete instructions to participants (verbatim or paraphrased)

Formation of experimental groups

Specific experimental manipulations

Any control features of the design: randomization, counterbalancing

RESULTS (10 points)

Set the stage.

How would the raw data be converted for analyses (e.g., scores, proportions, etc.)? If there would be coding, explain the coding scheme.

Present the findings as if you were telling a story.

State the hypothesis or question in conceptual terms: “We ask, first, whether the men or the women are more emotionally expressive.”

State the hypothesis or question in operational terms: “Do the men produce more tears during the showing of the film than the women?”

Give the answer: “As Table 1 reveals, men do, in fact, cry more profusely than women.”

Support the answer with direction and/or degree: “The men in all four conditions produced significantly more tears than the women.”

Elaborate or qualify the overall conclusion, if appropriate. “Only in the Father-watching condition did the men fail to produce more tears than the women”

Summarize where things stand: “Thus, except for the Father-watching condition, which will be discussed below, the hypothesis that men cry more than women in response to visually depicted grief appears to receive strong support.”

Lead into the next section with a transition sentence: “Men may thus be more expressive than women in the domain of negative emotion, but are they more expressive in the domain of positive emotion? Table 2 shows that they are not. . .”

Figures.

Include at least one figures. Use a figure when findings cannot be simply stated in one or two numbers.

Label both the independent and dependent measures clearly and completely on the axes.

Include a caption to explain in a sentence or phrase what is depicted in the figure.

In the text, refer to the table or figure at the appropriate point, and guide the reader through the figure: “As shown in Figure 1, men produce more tears than women . . .”

DISCUSSION (25 points)

Move from the specific to the general.

How would your results support your hypotheses? Open with a clear statement of support or non-support.

Recap but don’t repeat your results

What inferences or implications can be drawn from the findings?

Theoretical implications and significance?

Practical implications and significance?

Don’t just restate the findings – think critically about the findings and draw your own conclusions about what they tell us about how people behave in specific situations

How do your results relate to those of other investigators?

What are the shortcomings of your study? What threatens the validity of your conclusions?

What questions remain unanswered? What are some future directions for research on this topic?

Why does your study make an important contribution?

Should be between 3 and 5 pages

REFERENCES (7 points)

Use APA format. Make sure all citations in the text are in the References section and vice versa. Make sure references are high quality, peer-reviewed published papers (e.g., no websites or Dissertation Abstracts International).

What health habits do you need to acquire to live longer and healthier?

Aging Journal

Think of your current lifestyle. What health habits do you need to acquire to live longer and healthier? What can you do to help yourself change these poor habits? Do you have any family history of diseases or early death that would encourage you to do so?

What is your Gender Expression? How do you outwardly express what your Gender Identity is?

What is your sex? This can be genetic, or assigned at birth. Are/were you comfortable with it?

What is your Gender Identity? Why do/did you choose this? DO you feel that you chose it, or that it chose you (that it really was not a choice)? When in your life did you know or realize this was your gender? Have you ever encountered any resistance to this? (there are a whole lot of words, descriptions, labels that you can use as gender identity/expression, not just what is on the Unicorn!)

What is your Gender Expression? How do you outwardly express what your Gender Identity is? In any or all of: dress, look, communication, body language, behavior, attitude, etc? Has it changed from the past? Does it fluctuate today?

And lastly, what is your One Big Takeaway that you have learned from this class? What is the information that you have gained here that has resounded with you, that you will remember and carry with you into the future? Elaborate on this as you wish

Have you ever thought about the socially-based labels we assign to people of different genders?

Remember how the discussion assignments work. You need to respond to one discussion question with an essay of 400-600 words with at least two references. This is due by 11:59 pm (Central Time) on Thursday. By Sunday, you need to submit two video responses to people who, ideally, answered questions other than the one you answered. Video responses should be meaningful and be between 1:30 and 2:00 minutes in length.

Please include the question you are answering at the beginning of the posting. If you notice that several people have answered a particular question, try to answer a different one. The more different discussion topics we have, the better.

Here are the questions for Week Three:
1. Myers indicates that the underlying assumption of evolutionary psychology is that humans are gene-producing machines with the basic motivation of perpetuating their own genetic pool. Our genes predispose us to act in ways that enhance our chances of surviving and spreading. This fundamental motive underlies all behavior. What are your thoughts on that premise? Cite research both for and against your view of this evolutionary psychology belief.
2. What do you find most important when selecting a mate? What characteristics are most important to you? An exciting personality, industriousness, physical attractiveness, or good financial prospects? How about the age of a potential partner? Could they be older, same age, or younger? How about a significant age difference? Be truthful to yourself and do not select criteria based on what you think is most socially appropriate. Now, talk about your mate selection based on evolutionary psychology and how biology may play a role in what you find most attractive.
3. Have you ever thought about the socially-based labels we assign to people of different genders? In the text, there was a reference to males being assigned more positive terms than females. For example, research investigating the rate my professor.com site found certain language used to describe female professors far more than male professors, and vice versa. Follow the link in the following article to the interactive chart to see which words students use for male professors and which words they more commonly used for female professors (https://thinkprogress.org/students-see-male-professors-as-brilliant-geniuses-female-professors-as-bossy-and-annoying-5dd018d5a785/#.7riud64c0). Discuss this topic and cite at least one additional study on the topic.
4. Most countries have a degree of diversity, that is becoming more prominent in our interconnected world. Two terms used to describe a person’s integration into another society are assimilation and acculturation. What are the similarities and differences between these terms?
5. Pick a classic conformity and obedience study from the text and discuss it. How was the study set up and what were the researchers trying to measure? What were the results of the study? Was this a true experimental design or another form or research? What are the limitations of the study? Any ethical concerns about the study that may have existed when it was completed or now?
6. Is disorder contagious? According to the research (http://bps-research-digest.blogspot.com/2008/12/signs-of-petty-crime-such-as-litter-and.html), people are more likely to litter, violate rules, and steal when in a disorderly environment, such as one strewn with graffiti or litter. As in many of the examples of contagion Myers and Twenge note in Chapter 6, often the “infected” person is unaware of the source of the influence. Of course, we often are aware when there are incivilities in our environment. What uncivil behaviors bother you the most? Why? How does your view of uncivil behavior compare to that of the general society?
