The purpose of intelligence quotient (IQ) tests has been explained as identifying any cognitive challenges children faced within public schooling and enhancing their education (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). The IQ test was designed to measure a child’s cognitive ability with certain aspects such as judgement, comprehension, and reasoning (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is an IQ styled test that measures an individual’s performance within four mental aspects which include verbal comprehension, processing speed, perceptual organization, and working memory (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). When it comes to the impact of knowing one’s personal IQ score this may involve a fixed intelligence mindset if outcomes are poor (Gál et al., 2022). There are three main aspects that individuals differ from when it comes to intelligence including speed processing, working memory, and learning three-term contingencies (Williams et al., 2008).

Fixed intelligence mindsets are based off the belief that one’s intelligence capacity cannot be improved beyond current capacity (Gál et al., 2022). A fixed intelligence mindset has been linked with an increased chance for maladaptive emotional reactions, and previous studies have supported the idea for self-esteem being a contributing mediator between fixed intelligence and negative emotions (Gál et al., 2022). Fixed intelligence mindset has been positively associated with negative emotions and is suggested as an ego-threat (Gál et al., 2022). For example, if an individual repeatedly took an IQ test and saw no progress or repeatedly took the SAT and failed to get a passing score a fixed intelligence mindset might be “I failed this test I don’t deserve to go to college” or “I failed the exam, I am dumb” (Gál et al., 2022). Overall intelligence is said to distinguish individuals, help identify difficulties, and could potentially shift an individual’s self-esteem (Gál et al., 2022).

Advantages or Disadvantages of IQ Testing

When reading over IQ test disadvantages seemed to be more present. When it came to advantages the main argument was that IQ test may help make decisions within academic, occupational, and interpersonal contexts (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). One disadvantage with IQ test is that many don’t utilize non-cognitive components such as socioemotional skills and interpersonal skills which still involve mental functioning (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). Broad theorists are said to empathize the term intelligence to involve contexts such as creativity and wisdom and examine biological characteristics, psychological processes, and sociocultural aspects (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). Narrow theorist on the other hand argues that when it comes to intelligence and IQ test methods following broad theorist this only expands the concept of intelligence (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019). Narrow theorists believe that broad theorist downplay the importance of IQ test which can be seen as a disadvantage (Ganuthula & Sinha, 2019).

Psychological Treatment Plan
It is recommended that students review the e-book The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner (Jongsma, Peterson, & Bruce, 2014) for additional assistance in completing this assignment.

Clinical and counseling psychologists utilize treatment plans to document a client’s progress toward short- and long-term goals. The content within psychological treatment plans varies depending on the clinical setting. The clinician’s theoretical orientation, evidenced-based practices, and the client’s needs are taken into account when developing and implementing a treatment plan. Typically, the client’s presenting problem(s), behaviorally defined symptom(s), goals, objectives, and interventions determined by the clinician are included within a treatment plan.

To understand the treatment planning process, students will assume the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and develop a comprehensive treatment plan based on the same case study utilized for the Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in PSY645. A minimum of five peer-reviewed resources must be used to support the recommendations made within the plan. The Psychological Treatment Plan must include the headings and content outlined below.

Behaviorally Defined Symptoms

Define the client’s presenting problem(s) and provide a diagnostic impression.
Identify how the problem(s) is/are evidenced in the client’s behavior.
List the client’s cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

Long-Term Goal

Generate a long-term treatment goal that represents the desired outcome for the client.
This goal should be broad and does not need to be measureable.

Short-Term Objectives

Generate a minimum of three short-term objectives for attaining the long-term goal.
Each objective should be stated in behaviorally measureable language. Subjective or vague objectives are not acceptable. For example, it should be stated that the objective will be accomplished by a specific date or that a specific symptom will be reduced by a certain percentage.

Interventions

Identify at least one intervention for achieving each of the short-term objectives.
Compare a minimum of three evidence-based theoretical orientations from which appropriate interventions can be selected for the client.
Explain the connection between the theoretical orientation and corresponding intervention selected.
Provide a rationale for the integration of multiple theoretical orientations within this treatment plan.
Identify two to three treatment modalities (e.g., individual, couple, family, group, etc.) that would be appropriate for use with the client.
It is a best practice to include outside providers (e.g., psychiatrists, medical doctors, nutritionists, social workers, holistic practitioners, etc.) in the intervention planning process to build a support network that will assist the client in the achievement of treatment goals.

Evaluation

List the anticipated outcomes of each proposed treatment intervention based on scholarly literature.
Be sure to take into account the individual’s strengths, weaknesses, external stressors, and cultural factors (e.g., gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc.) in the evaluation.
Provide an assessment of the efficacy of evidence-based intervention options.

Ethics

Analyze and describe potential ethical dilemmas that may arise while implementing this treatment plan.
Cite specific ethical principles and any applicable law(s) for resolving the ethical dilemma(s).

Discuss each theme in the light of the relevant literature either the ones already cited in the literature review session or new but recent ones.

IQ tests are standardized tests that measure an individual’s cognitive abilities, including memory, speed, attention, mathematical skills, spatial perception, language abilities, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remember information. These tests are also used to assess and diagnose intellectual disability, as well as to determine an individual’s general intellectual abilities. (Cherry, K. 2022)

The purposes of IQ tests are varied and include identifying individuals who may require additional support in school or in the workplace, determining eligibility for special education services, and are used as a tool for psychological and educational research. Additionally, IQ tests are often used to make decisions about college admission and job placement, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of educational and training programs (Richardson, K., 2015).

Knowing your IQ can have a significant impact on a person, both positive and negative. On one hand, a high IQ score can bring recognition and opportunities for advancement in education and career. On the other hand, a low IQ score can lead to a sense of low self-esteem, as well as limited opportunities for educational and career advancement.

The advantages of using IQ tests include the fact that they provide a standardized measure of cognitive abilities, which can be useful for making comparisons between individuals and for evaluating the effectiveness of educational and training programs, in general. There is a correlation between working memory and intelligence in several complex cognitive functions, including text and reading comprehension, mathematical skills, and reasoning (Scharfen, J., 2018) . Additionally, IQ tests can provide valuable information for educational and career planning, as well as for identifying individuals who may require additional support (Ganuthula, 2019).

However, there are also disadvantages to using IQ tests. For example, IQ tests have been criticized for being culturally biased and for not accurately measuring an individual’s true intellectual potential (Goslin D. A., 1968).Additionally, IQ tests may not accurately measure an individual’s ability to apply their cognitive abilities in real-life situations.

In conclusion, IQ tests are a commonly used tool for measuring cognitive abilities, but it is important to understand their limitations and to use them as just one aspect of a comprehensive assessment. It is essential to consider a variety of factors, including educational background, cultural background, and real-life experiences, when evaluating an individual’s intellectual abilities and potential.

Describe: What happened? Analyze: What effect did it have on me? How did it influence me? Respond: What can/should I do about it?

Analytical Journal

In keeping with the principle that “psychology happens everywhere,” which is guiding our approach to learning in this course, the following assignment is designed to help you identify everyday factors that influence your psychological functioning, analyze their effect on you, and apply your knowledge to construct an appropriate, or optimal, response.
For seven days, you are required to keep a journal in which you should write down one thing that happened to you each day. Give a brief description of the event; explain what was significant about it, what effect it had on you, and what you could or should do about it.

For each thing that you record the content should be organized in three paragraphs:

Paragraph 1: Describe: What happened? The description should be detailed enough to give context to your entry.
Paragraph 2: Analyze: What effect did it have on me? How did it influence me?
Paragraph 3: Respond: What can/should I do about it?

Discuss how you can disseminate our science to promote application in sustainability. Share ideas on how you can make use ABA to have a positive impact on society.

Behavior Change for a Sustainable World

There are so many ways to use ABA. To name a few, working with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities, organizational behavior management (OBM), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and even sustainability. Dr. William Heward presented Behavior Change for a Sustainable World [Webinar] to the Capella Society of ABA. Please watch the recording and address the following:

Discuss how you can disseminate our science to promote application in sustainability.
Share ideas on how you can make use ABA to have a positive impact on society.

Prepare 3–4 pro statements that might be given to support the use of the treatment. Evaluate your findings. Discuss at least four relevant ethics codes that you have learned in this course thus far.

CONTROVERSIAL BEHAVIOR ANALYTIC PROCEDURES

In a prior assignment, you considered some controversial treatments that were not evidence based. Controversial treatments can also be evidence based. There is debate in the field of ABA surrounding treatments involving guided compliance and extinction, particularly attention extinction and escape extinction. Some behavior analysts are quick to jump to these interventions, not fully considering how the side effects will impact the client. These interventions can be aversive and arguably considered punishment.

Conduct a search for information on one of the following aversive procedures: guided (forced) compliance, attention extinction, and escape extinction. Cite the source and describe the treatment.
Prepare 3–4 pro statements that might be given to support the use of the treatment. Also, prepare 3–4 con statements that might be given to oppose the treatment.
Evaluate your findings. Discuss at least four relevant ethics codes that you have learned in this course thus far.
