What would you suggest we do as a society to support patients who genuinely need to take psychotropic medications?

Patients with schizophrenia or mood disorders may be somewhat resistant to taking their medication. Schizophrenic patients often take meds for a while, get better, start to believe that they don’t need the meds and then stop taking them. Eventually their symptoms come back and they end up back on their meds again. Those with mood disorders often resist taking meds from the beginning due to the social stigma associated with “being crazy” or from the fear of becoming suicidal as a result of the meds(as has been widely reported in the media as a potential side effect). What would you suggest we do as a society to support patients who genuinely need to take psychotropic medications?

Describe an event, experience, relationship, that has had an impact on how you view or feel about your own sexuality or gender.

describe an event, experience, relationship, that has had an impact on how you view or feel about your own sexuality or gender. It can be a single experience or moment, it can be a relationship, it can be something you learned or observed growing up. Something you did or something that happened to you but it must in some way have shaped your experience/views/beliefs about your own sexuality or gender. Feel free to use a wide range of platforms for your autobiographical description: a brief essay or first person account, a poem, a dialogue or brief skit, etc. The most important thing is that it conveys something important about who you are as a sexual being. What do you want us to know about you, about what you bring to this topic about who you are in the room. Make it interesting!

Which of Marcia’s coping mechanisms did you experience during your exploration of this one aspect of your identity?

Study the Chapter 10 Power Point Slide Presentation slides about identity. IV. Start Only One New Discussion Thread with a Post that answers the following questions about identity:

1. Which one of the five aspects of identity discussed in the textbook, religious, political, ethnic, vocational or gender, have you achieved, after experiencing two or three of James Marcia’s ways of coping with the identity crisis, including role confusion, foreclosure, and moratorium, prior to reaching identity achievement?

2. How long did it take you to achieve this aspect of your identity? About how old were you when you first asked yourself “Who am I,” in relation to this aspect of your identity? About how old were you when you first felt like that aspect of your identity was achieved?

3. Which of Marcia’s coping mechanisms did you experience during your exploration of this one aspect of your identity? Answer at least two and all that apply: i. If you experienced role confusion of this aspect, were you aware of it at the time? If so, did it cause you distress and how did you react? How long did this role confusion last and how and why did it end? ii. If you experienced foreclosure, whose conception of this aspect of your identity did you accept without questioning or reject with an oppositional negative identity? How long did this foreclosure last and how and why did it end? How long did it take to achieve this part of your identity once the foreclosure was over? iii. If you experienced a moratorium, what event or circumstance allowed you to take a time-out while exploring this aspect of your identity? How long did this moratorium last and how and why did it end? How long did it take to achieve this part of your identity once the moratorium was over? How does anxiety differ to stress?

Module 8 Workbook Activity

The focus of this activity is around the COPE Inventory, which offers two key outcomes:

  1. An indicator of your own individual coping strategies/styles
  2. Greater awareness of the range of possible coping strategies
    NOTE:
a list of coping styles is described at the end of this activity

But first off…

Please provide a brief definition of stress, outlining both its positive and negative aspects:

ANSWER

As a follow-up question, how does anxiety differ to stress?

ANSWER:

Now for the COPE Inventory!

To complete this part of the activity, please first answer the questions from the COPE inventory posted on vUWS…

The Inventory has detailed instructions, but in brief:

  1. For each question in the inventory, give a number from 1-4
    (1 = I don’t do this at all… 4 = I usually do this a lot)
  2. At the end of the questionnaire, you will see a number of scales, and the inventory items that correspond to those scales. Add together the numbers you gave for each of the relevant questions. For example:

Positive reinterpretation and growth: Q1, Q29, Q38, Q59
My answers: 3, 2, 3, 3 = 11

  1. The higher the score for each scale, the more you use this type of coping.
  2. Once you complete the inventory, please answer the reflective discussion questions listed on the following page:

What did the COPE Inventory tell you about your coping strategies?

ANSWER:

To what extent were you aware that you used these coping strategies?

ANSWER:

  1. What do you like about your coping strategies?

ANSWER:

  1. Is there anything you would change about your coping strategies? Why?

ANSWER:

  1. Using your own example:
    a) identify current coping strategy/ies you use
    b) what strategy/ies might be more effective or constructive, and
    c) why is that strategy/ies more effective than alternatives?

E.g., let’s say I have been experiencing some distress caused by conflict between colleagues at work. I have been using denial strategies a lot to deal with these experiences, but recognise that this really is not helpful for me in the long term as it enables the problematic situations to continue… To change my response, I could try using instrumental social support to get advice and identify if there are opportunities to change the situation, then I might employ planning and active coping to implement a strategy to make positive change. I have determined that these strategies are more effective than alternatives, like reframing, venting, emotional support or acceptance because those other strategies won’t actually change the situation causing me distress – although it might help me manage my emotions. If, for example, the people involved in the work conflict are in positions of power/authority over my role, I might not feel empowered to use a more pro-active coping strategy, and so dealing with the emotions could be a more realistic response…

(NOTE: You can delete this example when writing your own answers!)

ANSWER:

  • Religion
    Increased engagement in religious activities
  • Positive Reinterpretation and Growth
Making the best of the situation by growing from it or viewing it in a more favourable light
  • Restraint Coping
Coping passively by holding back one’s coping attempts until they can be of use
  • Resignation/Acceptance
Accepting the fact that the stressful event has occurred and is real
  • Focus on and Venting of Emotions
An increased awareness of one’s emotional distress, and a concomitant tendency to ventilate or discharge those feelings
  • Denial
An attempt to reject the reality of the stressful event
  • Mental Disengagement
Psychological disengagement from the goal with which the stressor is interfering, through daydreaming, sleep, or self-distraction
  • Behavioural Disengagement

The Scholarly Paper should demonstrate critical thinking skills commensurate with advanced levels of scholarship, such as evaluation, analysis and synthesis. You may wish to review Bloom’s Taxonomy for clarification. Note that a scholarly paper usually incorporates a thesis, antithesis (a contrasting or opposing position) and synthesis. Be sure to defend (i.e., substantiate) your position statements with research-based evidence and well-thought “arguments.” Provide a reasoned critique of salient themes or positions you have advanced. Suggest directions for further study and research. Additionally, be sure to detail 1-2 key studies to illustrate how central themes are empirically investigated. Provide brief information regarding hypothesis, sampling and design methodologies, and results. Then, provide some critique and summary statements regarding the implications of the study or studies. Be sure you have used and cited references that meet the standard for scholarship.
