What are the key ideas, and theories, and who are the key contributors? Include historical milestones that influenced thinking in the field over time. Analyze the societal or cultural needs that led to the development of this area of psychology, and include examples.

Research Paper

Imagine you are applying for a researcher’s position in the Psychological Services department at a large health care organization. You are among three finalists for the job. The next step in the hiring process is to submit a short white paper that discusses a specific area of applied psychology that is of interest to you. A white paper is an authoritative report intended to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.

In your paper, do the following:

Describe Human Factors Psychology.
What does it focus on?
What does it do?
What are the key ideas, and theories, and who are the key contributors? Include historical milestones that influenced thinking in the field over time.
Analyze the societal or cultural needs that led to the development of this area of psychology, and include examples.
Analyze how a specific area of psychology may influence current professional behavior, and provide examples to support your analysis.

Use at least one professional source, such as a textbook, and at least two scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles) to support your analysis, including Ghislieri, C., Molino, M., & Cortese C. G. (2018). Frontiers in Psychology. Work and organizational psychology looks at the fourth industrial revolution: How to support workers and organizations? https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2018.02365/full

Does the temperature of a classroom affect test performance? Do males or females perform better on a memory test? Do violent cartoons cause children to hit?

Discussion – Research method

Below you will find three research questions. Your task is to choose ONE question.

Come up with an idea of how you would run an experimental study to find an answer to one of these questions.
Address who your subjects will be. How many subjects would you have?
What would your independent variable be? This means how would you divide your subjects into groups? What would be the difference in the way you treated the groups? For example, if I was testing a medication, one group would get the medication and the other would not (control group).
What is your dependent variable? This means what are you actually going to measure?

In your reply offer some input into their study. What could they change? What was a good idea?

Research Question CHOICES:
Choice one: Does the temperature of a classroom affect test performance?
Choice two: Do males or females perform better on a memory test?
Choice three: Do violent cartoons cause children to hit?

After listening, provide a summary of what this podcast covered. Are you practicing with a history of trauma in mind? Describe at least one thing you learned from this podcast and how you can use this information to better serve your clients.

Responsibility as a Professional and in Practice

In Weeks 3 and 4, we look at a behavior analyst’s responsibility as a professional and in practice. Listen to the following podcast:

Cicoria, M. (Host). (n.d.). What is trauma-informed ABA? Session 131 with Camille Kolu [Audio podcast] | Transcript. The Behavioral Observations Podcast. https://behavioralobservations.com/what-is-trauma-informed-aba-session-131-with-camille-kolu/

After listening, provide a summary of what this podcast covered. Are you practicing with a history of trauma in mind? Describe at least one thing you learned from this podcast and how you can use this information to better serve your clients. Given what you now know about the ethical code so far, which parts of the code is related to the topics of trauma-informed ABA?

Identify at least one pro statement that supports the use of the treatment. Summarize these statements and evaluate your findings. Discuss at least three relevant ethics codes that you have learned in this course thus far.

CONTROVERSIAL TREATMENTS

Numerous controversial treatments are promoted for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Almost all behavior analysts agree that these treatments lack sufficient empirical support. These treatments include facilitated communication, sensory integration, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, elimination diets, chelation therapy, floortime, and more. Conduct an Internet search for information on one of the topics mentioned above. If you would like to choose a topic not listed, first message your instructor for approval to be sure it is not evidence based. Also research the treatment in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysisor other professional ABA journals.

Identify at least one pro statement that supports the use of the treatment. These may come from experts, therapists, parents, or others. Also, identify at least one con statement that opposes or refutes the treatment.
Summarize these statements and evaluate your findings. Discuss at least three relevant ethics codes that you have learned in this course thus far.
Explain how to effectively evaluate treatments to determine if they are evidence based or not.
Explain, in your conclusion, how you would discuss the importance of using evidence-based strategies with colleagues and the families with whom you work while also respecting other professions and the people involved.

Discuss background literature and its “gaps” and / or “issues”. Build towards rationale for the current study, more precisely defining question /problem.

Quantitative Report:

Instruction :
Structure Funnel shape: Broad to narrow
Aim: Explain why the study is currently relevant, in light of previous work on this topic, and state exactly what you are testing in your study

Start with larger question
Then discuss background literature and its “gaps” and / or “issues”.
Build towards rationale for the current study, more precisely defining question /problem.
End with specific hypothesis, couched in terms of the variables that you manipulated and measured.
You are likely to need to include information on the variables just before this, so that the hypothesis makes sense.

Broad question: Do watching eyes have impact on prosocial behaviour?
Background literature: Theoretical context; What has been found before empirically? Specific studies, overall pattern, larger context if relevant.

Theoretical context :

Evolutionary psychology / Social psychology
Better behaviours in presence of others
Reputation seeking?
Picture of face or eyes may be proxy for presence of others
…”natural selection can be expected to have shaped human psychology to be exquisitely sensitive to cues that are (or were, under ancestral conditions) informative with respect to the likely profitability of cooperation in a given situation.” Hayley & Fessler, 2005, p. 248
This theoretical perspective predicts that an image of eyes may act as a cue for us to be prosocial

Theoretical background:
Direct gaze vs. averted gaze :

Debate: Eyes remind you of someone watching no matter what
Vs. eyes have to show a direct gaze for watching eyes effect to occur
Manesi et al. (2016): “… eyes gazing at an individual, rather than any proxy to social presence (e.g., just the eyes), serve as a reminder of reputation. …it is ‘‘eyes that pay attention’’ that can lift the veil of anonymity and potentially facilitate prosocial behavior.” (p. 1)

Conti et al (2016): Direct gaze triggers self-referential processing, which is key to the watching eyes effect

Why do we study the humanities if we are treating the body? What does studying the humanities give us that mere scientific study and exploration cannot? What does contemplating art and considering the beauty of the human experience, even a painful one, bring to the healthcare provider’s landscape of understanding?

Discussion Essay

Look back on your experience reflecting on various poems, paintings, and other media.

Think about what you were able to experience vicariously through the words, expression, and visualization of the artists.

Consider what new knowledge, understanding, sensitivity, or sensation you were able to encounter that you would not have done otherwise. Then, bring that awareness to your concept of what skills it is important for healthcare providers to possess and answer these questions:

Why do we study the humanities if we are treating the body?
What does studying the humanities give us that mere scientific study and exploration cannot?
What does contemplating art and considering the beauty of the human experience, even a painful one, bring to the healthcare provider’s landscape of understanding?
As you answer the above questions, be sure to consider the following:

Include your observations and reflections from your favorite discussion posts and the ideas and discoveries the works of art from the modules inspired in you
Consider the words of Martignoni, Mann, Frank, and others on the importance of the medical humanities
Incorporate your own thoughts and interpretations that may not have been specifically articulated in your reading and other materials.

Racial stereotyping and discrimination are antisocial behaviors. Given the impact of learning on human behavior, what is the first step that a person could take to unlearn discriminatory behavior and adopt a more accepting and inclusive attitude toward all people?

Mod 5

In a conversation with a family member, you are told: “Bad people do bad things. Some people are just bad eggs.” For this discussion, you will incorporate what you have learned about antisocial behavior and its implications for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

First, title your post “Antisocial Behavior.”

For your initial post, review the videos What Is the Definition of Microaggression? and If Microaggressions Happened to White People. Then answer the following questions:

  • Are microaggressions real or imagined? Discuss the implications of statements such as “You shouldn’t take offense” and “Oh stop—you’re being too sensitive” on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • To what extent can we excuse a person’s motivation to participate in riots or tendency to bully others when it’s an aspect of group behavior? Discuss the implications of group mentality on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Racial stereotyping and discrimination are antisocial behaviors. Given the impact of learning on human behavior, what is the first step that a person could take to unlearn discriminatory behavior and adopt a more accepting and inclusive attitude toward all people?
  • Our conception of bad eggs might inadvertently categorize people into specific social groups. How can we reframe the “bad” in people to view them through a less discriminatory and more inclusive, humanistic lens?
  • How does the concept of antisocial behavior apply to any of the following programmatic course themes:
    • Self-care
    • Social justice
    • Emotional intelligence
    • Career connections
    • Ethics
