What is the relationship between applied research and basic research? Provide an example from your selected studies, of how each contributes to the body of knowledge.

Search for research articles from peer-reviewed publications in the University Library. Ebscohost is the best database to locate peer-reviewed research articles. Examples of peer-reviewed publications are listed in Table 2.1 in Chapter 2 of Methods in Behavioral Research.

Select four research articles to review. Include at least one applied research article and one basic research article in your four articles. Be sure to apply the scientific method to evaluate the evidence presented in the selected articles. Use these articles as a framework for completing the questionnaire. You will not review the content of the articles, but you should list your four articles in the References.

Write a 500-word answer to each of the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of each of the sections in a typical research article?
  • What are the steps to critically evaluate research articles and how does the scientific method help you do this?
  • What is the importance of research in behavioral sciences?
  • What is the relationship between applied research and basic research? Provide an example from your selected studies, of how each contributes to the body of knowledge.
  • What ethical issues can you identify in the selected articles? How were the issues addressed or neglected?
  • Identify three possible research topics that you might want to explore further as you go through this course.
  • List appropriate sources, including databases in the library (such as Ebscohost) that you might use when exploring these topics.

If you have selected a brain-based disorder, describe the symptoms of the disorder and how those symptoms are related to the brain structures that are involved.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment visit the PubMed Central (Links to an external site.) web page. You may also consider reviewing the PubMed Central Quick Start Guide (Links to an external site.) and PubMed Tutorials (Links to an external site.) to help you navigate the resource more effectively.

For your assignment this week, you will complete an additional step on your selected topic for the final project. This week you will gather another five scholarly sources that relate to the behavioral aspects of your topic. Please note that the topic you selected will determine what questions you will address from the two options listed below.

Option A: If you have selected a brain-based disorder,

Describe the symptoms of the disorder and how those symptoms are related to the brain structures that are involved.

Option B: If you have selected a brain process,

Discuss how the brain processes information to reach the behavior in question.

Before writing your Discussion Board thread, take the Multiple Intelligences Test found in the Module 5 “Reading & Study” folder. Do you think “multiple intelligences” is a valid construct?  In other words, do multiple intelligences exist?

Before writing your Discussion Board thread, take the Multiple Intelligences Test found in the Module 5 “Reading & Study” folder.

Once you have the results of the test, you can address the following discussion board prompts with your own personal results in mind.

  1. Do you think “multiple intelligences” is a valid construct?  In other words, do multiple intelligences exist?  (Be sure to include connections to the textbook/research when building your argument.)
  2. Do you think that the test you took in Module 5 gave a valid picture of your intellectual abilities?  In other words, do you think that test accurately measured what it is supposed to measure?
  3. Provide at least one recommendation about how the developers of this multiple intelligences test could demonstrate evidence for the validity of the test.  Your recommendation should focus on one of the types of validity described in the textbook [i.e., content-related validity, predictive validity, concurrent validity, or construct validity (using convergent or discriminant evidence)].
  4. Finally, make a Biblical argument either for or against the existence of multiple intelligences.  Whichever stance you take, be sure to back it up with meaningful and relevant scripture references.

Choose a character from a book, television show, or movie who is portrayed as suffering from a psychological disorder. Describe your character and his or her behaviors and feelings

Choose a character from a book, television show, or movie who is portrayed as suffering from a psychological disorder. (Examples: My Mad Fat Diary, The Hunger Games series, Forest Gump, Rain Man).

Describe your character and his or her behaviors and feelings for each of the D’s described below. Are variations in those behaviors and feelings significant enough to constitute a psychological disorder, in your opinion?

Note that many professionals utilize the four D’s (Davis, 2009) to determine abnormality:

Deviance: Are the behaviors/feelings deviant?

Dysfunction: Do the behaviors/feelings interfere with the individual’s ability to function in daily life?

Distress: Does the individual experience distress due to the behaviors/feelings?

Danger: Are the behaviors/feelings harmful to the individual or those around him/her?

(Some consider a fifth “D,” Duration.).

Choose a fitting diagnosis, referencing the DSM-5.

Predict possible treatment options for this particular disorder, based on your resources.

Explain how cultural and social diversity might influence perception and experience of this disorder.

To fully demonstrate content knowledge and critical thinking, the Motivation, Emotions, and Health, and Psychological Disorders and Therapies discussion must;

Appraise course concepts explicitly, applying them to your personal experiences/observations, and cite the required readings as appropriate.

Be thorough and specific, structuring your work intentionally (with an introductory and concluding sentence or two), providing clear context, and concisely and precisely explaining relevant course concepts.

Use personal examples to illustrate as appropriate, but do be sure to provide an objective analysis too, referencing required materials and using additional credible sources as needed to support your insight. For more, see Summary vs. Analysis (Links to an external site.).

Use your own Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) and apply in-text citations appropriately throughout your post. For more, see APA: Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.).

Analyze a case of job motivation and attitude. How might Lydia’s age or financial situation be a factor in her work motivation and attitudes?

Individual motivation and attitude play a key role in job satisfaction and in related job performance. In this week, you will analyze a case of job motivation and attitude.

Consider this case:

Lydia is a 58-year-old woman who has worked with Norman Electronics for over 12 years. Lydia’s children are grown and her husband died three years ago, leaving Lydia a tidy insurance settlement. Lydia began working for the company head, Fred Norman Sr., as a general secretary and as the company expanded, she became an assistant to the head of personnel, where she dealt with scheduling interviews and handling related hiring issues for the 250 employees of Norman Electronics. Lydia knew almost all of the employees on a personal basis, and often spent extra hours doing new employee orientation, handling questions, and negotiating with management to settle employee complaints. Lydia was a very valued employee.

When a new position with higher pay opened in the payroll department, Fred Norman Jr., now head of Norman Electronics immediately promoted Lydia. She now was in charge of a group of five accountants whose job was to process the payroll, including computing the bonuses and sales commissions of the employees. After a brief training to orient her to her new responsibilities, Lydia began her new position. Although she was working a similar number of hours as in her old position, Lydia’s performance dropped on the job. The department itself had problems with accuracy and timeliness in delivering paychecks. Lydia herself often came to work late, or called in sick, citing exhaustion and tension headaches as a reason for her tardiness and absenteeism. In just a matter of months, Lydia had gone from being a loyal, valued employee, to a withdrawn employee whose presence in the company was becoming a liability.

Instructions:
For this assignment, write a paper in which you analyze the case of Lydia. Include in your analysis the following points:

  • What work motivation theory might best explain Lydia’s motivation?
  • How might Lydia’s age or financial situation be a factor in her work motivation and attitudes?
  • What tests would you use to evaluate Lydia’s job satisfaction and attitudes in her new position?

Write about someone who has had an impact on your own understanding of what it means to be male, female, transgendered, androgynous, or however you define your own gender

For your GENDER HERO, select someone who has significantly impacted the way we think about gender in the U.S. today and who is especially important to you.  Stated differently, you are to write about someone who has had an impact on your own understanding of what it means to be male, female, transgendered, androgynous, or however you define your own gender.  Examples could include the author of your textbook, Michael Kimmel, as well as people like Gloria Steinem (writer, activist, publisher), Margaret Cho (comedian and astute commentator), Maya Angelou (writer, poet, performer), and many others, male, female, transgendered, or gender fluid.  Fictional characters are acceptable (you will have to come up with some type of portrait or depiction of that person); authors are acceptable; use your imagination.

You will need to write about somebody for whom outside source material is available.  Part of the point of this assignment is for you to gain experience at assessing the accuracy of material found on the internet.Because many of the gender heroes students write about will not be covered in academic sources, you will need to use popular sources, which make it important for you to think carefully about how accurate they may be.

  1. Using at least two reputable sources beyond your textbook, prepare a 2-3 page paper or a 5 minute YouTube video about this person which includes 1 or 2 visual images. Cite your sources within your paper and in a Works Cited page according to APA style.  You should also use and cite your textbook if it covers information about your gender hero
  2. At a point in the paper where you can logically comment, discuss the sources of information you used to learn about your gender hero and assess their accuracy and usefulness. Did you find that your sources agreed on the main points about your hero’s life?  Is the information they gave believable?  If not, what do you question, and why?
  3. Be sure to give a fairly detailed background on the person you chose. Who is this person?  Where did s/he come from?  How was s/he in a position to do the work you admire?
  4. Using your own words, explain how this individual has affected the way we look at gender and why you think this is important.
  5. Describe what you admire about the person you chose, and what puzzles or disappoints you about him/her/them.
  6. If you were able to sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk with your person, what is a question you would really like to ask her/him/them?
  7. Place your person in context – given what we’ve covered in the class so far, where does he, they or she fit in? (Use your imagination to answer this question – there is no obvious answer.)

What coping strategies are most effective in reducing postpartum stress? For this topic, focus on specific coping strategies for stress and test the effectiveness of these strategies for mothers who have recently given birth.

What coping strategies are most effective in reducing postpartum stress?

For this topic, focus on specific coping strategies for stress and test the effectiveness of these strategies for mothers who have recently given birth. Be sure to review the literature to find appropriate measures for stress. Note: A successful paper in this area would not be too complicated and would consider realistic coping strategies that can be compared for effectiveness. It may be helpful to include a control group, but a control group that does something benign rather simply a “no condition” control would likely be stronger comparison

answer the following:
1. What specific research question do you have based off of this topic?
2. What two peer-reviewed sources (within the last 10 years) support your investigation (create an evaluative annotation for these two sources)
3. What are your dependent and independent variables of interest?
4. Create a hypothesis?
5. A very preliminary plan of how you might test your hypothesis
6. What analytic procedure you will use to obtain your result.

Write a 4-6 page research paper on a childhood psychological disorder.Analyze the etiology (causes) of the disorder from a biopsychosocial perspective making sure to clearly address all three components of this perspective.

For your final paper you will be writing a 4-6 page (not including the title and reference pages) research paper on a childhood psychological disorder. See the list of disorders below as possible options. Please note that many of these disorders can also be experienced in adulthood. For this paper you will specifically be examining these in relation to childhood onset.

In your paper you will need to pull information from a minimum of 3 sources in addition to your textbook. When writing this paper remember that it is a research paper, which means that all of our information should be pulled from your sources and not based on personal experience or opinion. With this in mind there should be ample in-text citations throughout your paper as you give credit to the sources of your information.

Devise and share a plan to change people’s false stereotypes about aging in our community. What advice might you give to someone taking care of a person with Alzheimer’s disease?

Devise and share a plan to change people’s false stereotypes about aging in our community.

When we spend time with older people, we may find that elderly people do indeed struggle with memory and abnormal aging, but this is the truth some people are able to age well. As you spend time with the elderly people you might find unexpected wisdom and a loyal friendship. For one thing the elderly population often has time and might be lonely, therefore they might just be into having a younger friend. Hence you would have less bias about the elderly population and have more truth. Discuss

Cognitive research suggests that your perception of what you did or who you are is more important than what you actually have done or who you really are.  Given this, what advice might you give to someone taking care of a person with Alzheimer’s disease?
