Propose a diagnosis based on the patient’s symptoms and the criteria listed for the disorder(s) in the DSM-5 diagnostic manual. Analyze and explain how the patient meets criteria for the disorder(s) according to the patient’s symptoms and the criteria outlined in the DSM-5 diagnostic manual.

Psychiatric Diagnosis

For this assignment, students will investigate and propose a psychiatric diagnosis based on the case study from the Gorenstein and Comer (2015) textbook Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology, chosen in the Week One “Initial Call” discussion or the Week Two “Initial Assessment” discussion. This paper will include an in-depth overview of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, treatment options for the diagnosis, and a sound rationale that explains why this diagnosis was made. Note that the diagnosis may include more than one psychiatric disorder.

The paper must present a thorough overview of each disorder within the diagnosis. Assume the audience has no prior knowledge of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, and provide relevant and easy to understand explanations of each for the readers. When writing the paper, it is critical to convey all the necessary information in a straightforward manner using non-technical language. (Reference the Professional Voice and Writing Links to an external site.resource provided by the Writing Center for assistance.) Support the analysis with at least five peer-reviewed sources published within the last ten years in addition to the course text.

The Psychiatric Diagnosis topical paper must include the following:

Explain psychological concepts in the patient’s presentation using professional terminology. Identify symptoms and behaviors exhibited by the patient in the chosen case study.
Match the identified symptoms to potential disorders in the DSM-5 diagnostic manual.
Justify the use of the chosen DSM-5 diagnostic manual (i.e., What evidence supports the validity of this manual? What are limitations of this manual?).
Summarize general views of the diagnosis from at least three theoretical orientations (g., cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, biological, sociocultural, evolutionary, psychoanalytic, integrative, etc.).

NOTE: Be clear that you are writing about theoretical orientations and using the theoretical orientations to explain the diagnosis. Do not use the theoretical orientations to discuss any therapy or treatment approaches. Your application of the theoretical orientations should answer the question: What causes this diagnosis? For example, “Based on the cognitive perspective, what causes this diagnosis?” “Based on the humanisitic perspective, what causes this diagnosis?” Etc. In addition, you may include a historical perspective on the diagnosis, but this is not required. Also note that here you are summarizing views of the overall diagnosis, not specific individual symptoms.

Include a discussion on comorbidity if the diagnosis includes more than one disorder.
Evaluate symptoms within the context of an appropriate theoretical orientation for this diagnosis (e.g., cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, biological, sociocultural, evolutionary, psychoanalytic, integrative, etc.).

NOTE: Here you are evaluating specific symptoms, not the overall diagnosis.

Use at least two peer-reviewed articles to assess the validity of this diagnosis, and describe which demographics are at a higher risk of developing the disorder or receiving the diagnosis based on age, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. Provide a brief evaluation of the scientific merit of these peer-reviewed sources in the validity assessment.

Summarize the risk factors (i.e., biological, psychological, environmental, and/or social) for the diagnosis If one of the categories is not relevant, address this within the summary.
Compare evidence-based and non-evidence-based treatment options for the diagnosis
Evaluate well-established treatments for the diagnosis, and describe the likelihood of success or possible outcomes for each treatment.

Create an annotated bibliography of five peer-reviewed references published within the last ten years to inform the diagnosis and treatment recommendation In the annotated bibliography, write a two- to three- sentence evaluation of the scientific merit of each of these references. Rethinking Psychopathology
Prior to beginning work on this interactive assignment, review your instructor’s initial forum post, and watch The Nature of the Mind–Part One: The Roots of Psychological Disorder. Links to an external site. Please note that the video selected for this week is dense and may be difficult to understand upon first viewing. You are encouraged to watch the video more than once over the course of several days to better understand the conversation in more depth.

As a scholarly member of the psychological community, you will be expected to engage in philosophical conversations on the nature of psychopathology and changes in the mind. This interactive assignment is an opportunity to have a philosophical conversation with your instructor and classmates on positive psychology and the nature of psychological suffering.

For your posts in this forum, note that the main topic is the nature of psychopathology and changes in the mind. In your initial post, include the following:

Reflect on the video, The Nature of the Mind–Part One: The Roots Links to an external site., and share your thoughts with the class.
What is your understanding of the nature of the mind?
Describe healthy mental functioning.
What leads to changes in one’s mental state to the point that psychopathology (unhealthy mental functioning) is demonstrated?
What is the relationship between the mind and other aspects of the human (e.g., body, personality, spirit, family, community, society, etc.)?
Include one graphic (e.g., image, picture, drawing, table, chart) to depict your understanding of the relationship between the mind and other aspects of the human.
How does culture impact one’s understanding of the mind and one’s understanding of mental health?
Comment on the use of diagnostic manuals and handbooks including how they may limit our understanding of psychopathology.
Guided Response: The goal of this discussion is to have an ongoing, dynamic, and respectful conversation about positive psychology and the nature of the mind, not a series of 20 to 30 separate conversations. This means that every post should be in response to another student’s post, creating one long thread. Only start a new discussion thread if you want to address an entirely different theme or question(s) within the discussion subject area. Additionally, only post after first carefully reviewing your colleagues’ posts within the thread.

Research one of the non-evidence-based treatments from the Chung (2012) e-book, summarize views of this treatment within its historical context, and relate these views to at least one modern theoretical perspective on psychopathology. Devise a strategy for transforming the non-evidence-based treatment into an evidence-based treatment by integrating a specific psychological theory with new or existing research.

Individual Differences in Educational Settings:

Studying Self-Efficacy [1,000 words]

An educational psychologist studied adolescents’ self-efficacy in school. The researcher was particularly interested in adolescents’ self-efficacy for learning physics, and in how self-efficacy is related to performance in physics and to intelligence. Data were collected in a secondary school in southeast London. One hundred and three children (51 boys, 52 girls) who were between thirteen and fifteen years old completed the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ, Pintrich & DeGroot, 1990). For the purpose of this study, only the subscale ‘self-efficacy’ was considered. The researcher also measured all participants’ IQs and collected their scores on a physics exam at the end of the school year (minimal physics exam score is 0, maximal score is 100). The key findings are presented overleaf.

Explain which therapeutic approach or combination of approaches you would take with the client and explain why. Identify and explain what you think the top goal(s) should be for the client. What steps should be taken to help your client achieve their goal(s)?

Week 6 Assignment: Case Study

Instructions

For this week’s assignment, you will have a chance to practice applying some of the concepts we’ve been learning over the past several weeks.  You will be “introduced” to four different clients, and after selecting two of the clients to focus on, you will address the following:

  • Explain which therapeutic approach or combination of approaches you would take with the client and explain why. (Crisis, CBT, decision, person-centered, logotherapy, etc.)
  • Identify and explain what you think the top goal(s) should be for the client.  What steps should be taken to help your client achieve their goal(s)?
  • Which micro skills do you think would be most effective in helping your client achieve these goals?  Be specific and clearly identify micro skills covered throughout the course.
  • Are there any cultural and/or ethical considerations you should be aware of?  Explain.

Client #3

Isabelle is 73 years old and recently fell and broke her arm. She lives alone with relatively little to no family or friends nearby. She was able to get care for her broken arm but has been extremely fearful since her fall. She is afraid to leave her house because she fears that if she gets hurt again her family will just lock her up in a facility and forget about her. No one has said anything to her about going to a nursing facility to live, but she “feels” like that is what they are thinking and finds herself avoiding contact with them.  She has trouble using the phone, so she has had minimal contact with anyone for the past week.  She recognizes that she is lonely, and she has noticed a decline in her mood and overall energy.

Client #4

Divya emigrated from India with her husband 25 years ago. They have three grown children. Divya was referred to therapy by her primary care physician, who was worried about her depression and stress, caused primarily because her mother in India had just been turned down for a second green card and visa. Divya’s mother had lived with them when the children were teenagers and had returned to India without renewing her green card. Divya was alternately angry with her mother over her negligence and worried about how she could take care of her now.  Divya  proceeded to talk rather rapidly and intently about her mother and the history of what she saw as the problem. She had brought her mother to live with her when her children were teenagers. Her mother stayed by herself all day and never helped around the house, then she would follow the children around after school. Divya  and her mother had fought over the mother’s not being helpful. She said she had asked her mother why she never said she loved her. Her mother had just shrugged her shoulders. Divya  said her own children had often complained that it wasn’t fair to them for their grandmother to be such a burden to the family.  Divya  said that her children were now grown and very successful in their lives and tried to tell her to let go of the grandmother. Then the mother returned to India for a visit and let her green card lapse. Divya  could not let go of the mother because, as her daughter, she felt that she had to take care of her. Her religion and culture expected it of her, as she did as well. She had spent a great deal of time and money trying to get another green card for her mother, even though the mother didn’t want it.

Identify the risks of stress. What are the biopsychosocial effects of stress on the body, both short-term and long-term? What factors put students at risk for stress and disease? What networks, groups, or local resources are available for support ? How can personal experiences and knowledge help a client/patient?

DISCUSSION QUESTION

This assignment has two parts. In Part 1, students will complete two questionnaires. In Part 2, students will complete an activity using their individual results.

Part 1: Locate and complete two free stress questionnaires online . See instructor announcement for further details.

Part 2: After reading Chapters 3, 4, and 5 in the textbook, completing both questionnaires, and reviewing the Class Resources, complete one of the following assignments/activities:

  • Newsletter
  • Poster

In the chosen activity, comprehensively explain the following:

Provide the details and results of personal stress and self-care questionnaires .

What does a student’s personal stress look like ?

Students can accumulate a lot of stress from the financial burden universities and colleges can be. To being a full time student and full time worker then throw in other bills that need to be paid to stress from family relationships, friend relationships and even person relationships.

Using the results of the questionnaires, what are some ways to cope with stress? How does a student personally cope (i.e., diet, exercise, faith)?

Some ways to cope with stress can be physical activity such as sports, running, yoga, to changing your diet and even praying sometimes can help some people. Some ways a student can cope is by listening to music and playing soccer

Identify the risks of stress. What are the biopsychosocial effects of stress on the body, both short-term and long-term? What factors put students at risk for stress and disease?

What networks, groups, or local resources are available for support ?

How can personal experiences and knowledge help a client/patient?

Include two to three scholarly sources (the textbook may count for one of these).

If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Monica faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer? Explain how your experience or knowledge can resolve a similar workplace conflict.

Touchstone response

Monica and Jennifer are coworkers that have been assigned to work on a project together. Jennifer is very organized and wants her and Monica to do really well on this project. To get started, Jennifer took some initiative and prepared a list of to-do items along with the due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate who will do which item. Shortly after, Jennifer sends an email to Monica with the to-do list attached. Jennifer wants her partner to know that she is serious about their success.

Monica is happy her teammate has shown initiative but is surprised by Jennifer’s to-do list and feels a bit uncomfortable as she is feeling like Jennifer is micromanaging her. Monica wants to do her part on the project but is feeling anxious because she doesn’t know where she fits in. Monica is worried about working on the project. She wonders if she can succeed in this project since Jennifer is already the leader. Prior to this situation, Monica worked for a separate employer who asked her to work on a similar project. She felt anxious about her ability to successfully complete the project and attempted to communicate her feelings with a co-worker. However, her co-worker didn’t seem to understand Monica’s concerns and said that she should just ignore her feelings and get the work done.

As Monica ponders having a conversation with Jennifer, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks it might just be easier to be removed from the project.

ASSIGNMENT: Now, it is time to practice the skills and concepts that you have learned to help your friend Monica navigate through a difficult workplace situation. Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skill, as well as what you have learned about personality traits and emotions, answer the questions in this case study assignment. Remember, you are to help Monica calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem.

Download and use the touchstone response template to answer the questions.

In order to foster learning and growth, all work you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.

  1. Assignment

DIRECTIONS: To complete the assignment, you will answer the following four questions in 5-7 sentences each:

What are the “Big 5” personality traits? Name and describe each of them, using specific details and information from the case study and course lessons.

Consider the different approaches to the project taken by both Monica and Jennifer. On which of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ? Discuss these differences in their personality traits.

Using what you learned about emotions, what advice would you give to Monica? Describe a specific strategy that Monica can use to manage her emotions and successfully complete the project.

If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Monica faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer? Explain how your experience or knowledge can resolve a similar workplace conflict.
