Analyze and critique the week’s reading assignments. Discuss what your found interesting or uninteresting, flaws in the reasoning of the papers.

Week 9 Weekly Reflection

This paper (~1 page single spaced) should analyze and critique the week’s reading assignments. Being able to critically review research is an important aspect of scientific enterprise. In addition, article reflections ideally facilitate appreciation for how empirical research is conducted and encourage careful consideration of how theory informs methods of data collection and analysis. You should include at most a few sentences summarizing the readings, followed by your critique or analysis of the readings. You could discuss what your found interesting or uninteresting, flaws in the reasoning of the papers, your assessment of the conclusions drawn and whether the data support the theory, issues that the author did not consider, synthesis of opposing viewpoints presented across several papers, an idea for future research, etc. The ideas expressed in your article reflection should be clear and concise, but please do not write a simple summary of the readings.

Because some students may specialize in different disciplines, they may want to “spin” the week’s themes in a reasonable fashion toward their interests, which is fine. The goal is to make sure that students not only complete the readings, but also put some degree of thought into the implications of, and interconnections among the readings and after our discussion of the topic that week. The article reflection should span across all the readings of the week. A reflection of only one of the articles will not receive a passing grade.

How does Structuralism differ from Functionalism? Provide examples.

Structuralism/Functionalism

Prompt:
How does Structuralism differ from Functionalism? Provide examples.

Why don’t we use or rely on heuristics, even when we’ve been trained to do so? Provide any TWO reasons, biases, or concerns that humans have in relation to heuristic use. Provide an example from your own life where you blatantly ignore “pearls of wisdom”.

Reflection-Synthesis

Answer the following questions and prompts in a 3-4 page narrative that demonstrates a personal understanding of the material. Provide detailed examples from your own experiences that illustrate the concepts; if possible, discuss how this information might be relevant to your future career; whenever possible, define concepts with your own words.

Answer EACH of the six questions.
 What is the age-old assumption about human beings that we are working AGAINST in this modern science of Judgment and Decision Making (JDM)? (Hint: economists assume this). Give an example in your own life where this assumption would SEEM to be true or useful, but is clearly wrong.

 Identify and discuss TWO reasons why statistical models out-perform even experts in making accurate judgments. ALSO, we DID say, in our conclusion of the discussion on predictive models that there is STILL a role for human experts to play. Actually, we mentioned two. Identify just one of them.

 Consider the task of judging whether one city is more populous than another – name a factor (JUST ONE) that is high in both ecological validity AND discrimination rate. Explain in your own words what the difference between those two concepts are.

 Why don’t we use or rely on heuristics, even when we’ve been trained to do so? Provide any TWO reasons, biases, or concerns that humans have in relation to heuristic use. Provide an example from your own life where you blatantly ignore “pearls of wisdom”.

 Define the law of large numbers. Based on this, in what size groups should we expect to see MORE variability? Provide a real-life example where this phenomenon is relevant.

 Explain the “snapshot model” of a memory for an event? What are the important moments in an experience? Give an example from your own life.

What is the title of your article and who is (are) the author(s)? In what journal article did it appear and when? What question, problem, or hypotheses did the author(s) investigate? What was the purpose of the study?

Social anxiety

The paper will answer the questions found in the outline. The paper should have an introduction, main text (eg. authors, publication, hypothesis, methods, results, etc…) and conclusion.
A cover page, abstract & a reference page (work cited page)
Your evaluation is a summary and analysis in your own words. In instances when you paraphrase or quote the article, you must cite the source.

Write your article evaluation by answering ALL of the following questions (in this order):
1.What is the title of your article and who is (are) the author(s)? In what journal article did it appear and when?
2.What question, problem, or hypotheses did the author(s) investigate? What was the purpose of the study? If there is no hypothesis, indicate as such.
3.Summarize prior research on the topic. (The article will include a section that provides an overview of other relevant research). Summarize and cite the most relevant prior research. All those cited in your paper must be included in your work cited page.
4.Where was the study conducted and who were the participants? How were the participants (sample) selected? Describe the participants in detail.
5.Summarize the method/procedure. What instruments & techniques were used?
6.What were the findings/results of the study? (summarize in your own words)
7.Did the findings turn out as the author/researcher had anticipated? Why or why not? Relate the findings to the hypothesis, question or purpose.
8.What were the strengths and weaknesses of the study? (i.e., sample size, sample selection, design, procedure, amount of information, bias, etc.)
9.What was (were) the primary contribution(s) of the study? What did this study add to our understanding of the topic and what new information was provided that was not known previously?
10.If you were instructed to do a follow-up study, what would you do and why?
11.Discuss your personal thoughts and views on this topic (relate to your own experiences). Why did you choose this topic?

Write a reflection paper (2-3 pages) about the experience, including about any issues, needs, conflicts, theories that you have experienced through attending the session, as well as learned in the readings or class discussions to date. Start the paper with a brief introduction about the support group.

Death Dying & Grief in Pediatric Care

Contact your local Child Life, Hospice, or Compassionate Friends (agency supporting families after the loss of a child – the link will take you to their “find a local chapter” page) to find a local grief support group. Share with them that you’re a studying Death Dying & Grief in Pediatric Care and ask if they allow students to attend a single session as an observer. We suggest you contact early, as it may take some time to find an appropriate group and time to participate.

Attend a support session. Ask in advance if they prefer you to observe or participate.

If you haven’t yet completed your observations for the Support Group assignment, as observations likely aren’t an option this week UNLESS you’ve found an online group to observe, I’d absolutely allow you to complete an interview (by phone or email is fine) with someone who leads a support group….your interview should include (but not be limited to) these questions…..how do they structure their support group, the training they went through to prepare for this role, and any advise they’d give someone starting in the field….

Choose either a school system, a clinical mental health setting, or an addiction setting. Write up a plan for increasing awareness to help advocate for the particular group/population that could be implemented in their chosen setting.

Advocacy Plan

Students will review current literature related to multicultural competency, advocacy, and professional counseling. Each student will focus on an issue relevant to one population of their choosing within either a school system, a clinical mental health setting, or an addiction setting (to be approved by instructor). Students will then write up a plan for increasing awareness to help advocate for the particular group/population that could be implemented in their chosen setting. The goal is that the plan can be implemented in a counseling setting and is not just a theoretical plan. Again, this plan would have a goal to increase awareness and advocate for one particular culture, minority or minority issue relevant to their intended site/population. The plan should include a minimum of five current (published within the last five years) research studies from professional/refereed journals in the field of professional counseling to support the rationale for this plan. The written paper must be well organized, clearly presented, with salient points and a thoughtful summary of the rationale for this particular plan for advocacy.
