Ask a question

1, Explain the role of providing different affordances to children (you might have to do some searching).

What physical thing (not parent) was in your childhood that was the biggest influence on you? Think back to the play years… or if you have kids now – what do you provide for them.

2, Learning to Talk – and so much more!

Do you like to read for fun?Steven Pinker: What our language habits reveal | TED Talk is very dry but it gets better the more your apply your knowledge of developmental psychology to it, and how does it relate to- Mark Pagel: How language transformed humanity | TED Talk

Given Mary Kay’s background and history, do you think the same outcomes would have resulted if these were male teachers instead of female teachers? Would males have had a similar reaction to their life experiences and turned to female students for attention and comfort? Elaborate upon your responses.

Discussion Forum #3

Complete the following questions related to chapters 6, 7, and 8 of Dangerous Women.

Number each response.

1. In chapter 6, The Taboo Breakers, five categories of female child molesters are presented. Which one of the categories do you feel offers the best explanation for the criminal conduct and behavior of Virginia Lion? How would you categorize her, and why? Support your stance.

2. This question applies to the case of Mary Kay Letourneau in chapter 7 of Dangerous Women.

Given Mary Kay’s background and history, do you think the same outcomes (having sexual relationships with students) would have resulted if these were male teachers instead of female teachers?

Would males have had a similar reaction to their life experiences and turned to female students for attention and comfort? Elaborate upon your responses.

3. Chapter 8 focuses on a topic rarely addressed, that of female sex offenders within the religious community. Discuss how the environment, practices, and roles of nuns can contribute to the ability to engage in long-term sexually abusive relationships without getting caught. Identify at least 3 elements of religious orders that protect female sex offenders from detection.

What is happening to Arlene? What senses were compromised? What areas of the brain were engaged? What will happen if she does not satisfy her hunger?

Hunger-Case Study

Arlene is going through her regular routine today. She wakes-up and gets ready to go to work. As she walks towards her office, she passes by her building’s cafeteria. Arlene realizes immediately that she forgot to eat breakfast before she left her house. She ignores this thought and continues on towards her office.

However, once she gets settled at her desk, she is unable to get to work as she cannot stop thinking about the smell of the freshly baked muffins coming from the cafeteria.

Explain, in your own words, the following:

What is happening to Arlene?
What senses were compromised?
What areas of the brain were engaged?
What will happen if she does not satisfy her hunger?

Some countries have much higher rates of alcohol-related violence than others. Why in some countries is the consumption of alcohol related to violent behavior, while the drinking that takes place in other countries is much less frequently accompanied by violence?

Risky Business-The Impact of Legal Drugs

Instructions: This week we learned about the two major legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and the issue of the discrepancy between their harm and their legal status. From a constructionist perspective, alcohol is not a drug, but from an “objectivist” or essentialist perspective, alcohol is a drug in the same sense that cocaine and the narcotics are because it can lead to a “high” or intoxication. We also learned about the connection between alcohol consumption and risky, deviant behavior such as violence, being a victim of violence, and accidents.

For this discussion address the following questions :

Do you think that such a strong relationship exists between the consumption of alcohol and being the victim of risky, deviant behavior? Explain.

Some countries have much higher rates of alcohol-related violence than others. Why in some countries is the consumption of alcohol related to violent behavior, while the drinking that takes place in other countries is much less frequently accompanied by violence?

What are the similarities and differences between the use of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco and the use of illicit drugs such as marijuana and cocaine?
