Almost 37 million people are living with HIV globally and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the region most severely affected by the epidemic (UNAIDS). Despite a general decline in the number of people newly infected with HIV in most SSA countries, differences in rates between population subgroups remain. Understanding the changes over time and differences across population groups is important for health professionals, epidemiologists and policy makers to design and implement targeted preventive interventions.

Table 1 below presents data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and the AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS) in 11 SSA countries for 2001-2014. The data show HIV prevalence in females and males aged 25-49 years by urban and rural areas in each of 18 countries.
