What is the purpose or role of the Holy Spirit?

1.Stefon writes, “Within the Christian perception and experience of God, characteristic features stand out (1) the personality of God, (2) God, as the creator, (3) God as the Lord of history, and (4) God as Judge” (83). Choose two of these characteristics to explain in more detail.
2. What do Christians claim about the nature of Satan?
3. The Christian creed claims that Jesus is of the same substance (homoousia) as God, the Father. What does this mean and what caused the development of this claim?
4. What is the purpose or role of the Holy Spirit?
5. Christians qualify their monotheistic claim about God noting the trinitarian character of God. What does that mean?
6. Christians claim that Jesus is both fully divine and fully human. Describe what Christians understand about human nature. (2 examples)
7. What does the concept of rebirth mean in Christian theology?
8. Eschatology is an attempt to understand what happens to each individual when they die, as well as what will happen at the end of human history. Describe two claims made at various points in Christian history.
9. Describe the claims made by Christians about the nature of the Kingdom of God.
10. Choose and explain one of the Christian atonement theories.

As you reflect on this message, how is it similar/different from how you’ve come to understand the nature and impact of the story of Jesus?

Christianity places the incarnation, God becoming human in the person of Christ, as the high point in salvation history. The impact of that particular moment in time and place (first-century Palestine) has had an impact and continues to impact the world. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan spiritual writer, offers a reflection on the continued impact of Christ on our modern world.

How do you understand what he is attempting to articulate? As you reflect on this message, how is it similar/different from how you’ve come to understand the nature and impact of the story of Jesus?

Discuss how their current circumstances affect their cultural practices. (

You should choose someone you know who is from a significantly different culture than your own (look for differences in things like country/region of origin, ethnicity, language, religion, time orientation, etc.). This person should be an unbeliever (or you will need to pretend that they are an unbeliever for the sake of this paper), and they should be from a macro-culture (think of a culture associated with a foreign country). You will write a formal academic paper about the cultural elements of this person. This paper will prepare you to share God’s story with them in an effective way for their culture and worldview. While there is no specific word count or page count for this project, significant effort should be made to thoroughly explore each of the topics below. Your paper should be neatly formatted and organized, and it should include a cover page, page numbers, footnote citations, proper headings and subheadings, and a bibliography. It should be double spaced and in Times New Roman, 12- pt. font.

Sec 1

In this section, you should introduce the person you have chosen to receive the Gospel message. Answer the following questions in a paragraph or two. (Questions in parenthesis are suggestions to help guide you as you describe the person.)

  • Give details about their identity (What is their age? Ethnicity? Where are they from? What religion do they follow? What language they speak? Where do they live now? What do they do for school/work, etc.?).
  • Provide information on your relationship with the person. (How do you know them? What are your interactions with them? Are they a coworker or neighbor? Do you see them on a regular basis or just periodically?)
  • Discuss how their current circumstances affect their cultural practices. (If their family is from a foreign country, but they have grown up most of their life in America, how does that affect their worldview? Do they adhere to all the traditional cultural practices on their parents?)
  • Discuss their interest in issues of faith? (Is this person open to hearing the story of God?)

**If you do not know someone from another culture, you may use a fictitious character and make up the cultural background information. The rest of your paper must follow the themes set by this section.

Section 2: Cultural Systems

In this section, you should choose at least 4 of the 6 cultural systems from Chapter 4 of Leading with Cultural Intelligence. Discuss each cultural system and identify which of the pair apply most directly to the culture of your friend (For example: Does your friend’s culture have a nuclear or kinship family system?). How does that cultural system affect your friend’s way of life, interactions, aspirations, and openness to issues of faith? Aside from interviewing your friend and referencing the course text book, you should include research from at least 1 outside source to support your arguments.

, Section 3: Cultural Value Orientations

In this section, discuss at least 7 of the 10 cultural value orientation pairs. Which cultural values are strong in your friend and their culture (For example: Does your friend’s culture have a short-term or long-term value orientation?)? How do each of these cultural values affect your friend’s worldview and actions? Use at least 1 outside resource other than interviewing your friend to support your assessment of the culture.

Page 2-3

Section 1: Elements of Communication

Discuss at least 3 elements of verbal and non-verbal communication which are prevalent in your friend’s culture. (Think about the verbal and non-verbal communication strategies presented in Chapter 7 of Leading with Cultural Intelligence.) You should include at least 1 verbal element and 1 non-verbal element. The 3rd element can be either verbal or non-verbal. How do you see these elements of communication in your friend’s culture? How do these elements of communication affect the way your friend sends and receives messages? Support your statements with at least 1 outside source other than an interview with your friend or the course textbook.

Section 2: Strategy for Communication

In this section, you will create a plan to communicate effectively to your friend. Answer the following questions in a couple of paragraphs. (Questions in parenthesis are suggestions to help guide your thoughts).

  • Discuss how you will use your knowledge of these cultural value orientations, cultural systems, and elements of communication to share the gospel effectively with your friend. (Which of their cultural value orientations should you keep in mind as you try to communicate with them? How will you adjust your communication, your approach to the conversation, and your language in order to best communicate the gospel message?)
  • Discuss how you will craft your story to meet your friend where they are. (Are there any themes you may use to focus your presentation which would most speak to your friend according to their culture and worldview? What part of the story do you think they will relate to most based on what you know about their cultural systems and cultural value orientations?)
  • Section 3: Outline of God’s Story
  • Prepare to share the Gospel by outlining the Story of God you would share. As we have discussed the Grand Narrative of scripture, we have covered many different topics and stories from the Bible, but there are some key elements which must be included in your story.
  • Essential Elements:
  • Creation
  • Fall-Sin
  • Promise-Covenant
  • Prophecies
  • Virgin Birth
  • Incarnation
  • Deity (fully man–fully God)
  • Jesus’ life (person and works)
  • Jesus’ Death
  • Ethnicity
  • Ascension
  • Return
  • Reconciliation
  • Kingship
  • This section should be a bulleted list of each of the elements above. For each element, you should write 2-4 sentences summarizing the element and describing how you would present that part of the story to your friend. You should also list scripture references for each element that you present. While you do not need to recite the scripture as you tell the story, we want to see that you know where in the Bible to point someone to if the opportunity were to arise. In your outline, you should list enough content to show that you know what each element is about, how it connects to the bigger picture of the grand narrative, and the best way to share the story.

What do you see as the values and detriments of such communication differences in the context of a romantic relationship

1) What do you see as the values and detriments of such communication differences in the context of a romantic relationship (utilizing specific examples of these differences from the text)? (Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity book ONLY CHAPTER 3)

2) How do you imagine this is enriched and/or complicated further by “computer-mediated communication” (pgs. 59-62) in modern romantic relationships? (Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity ONLY CHAPTER 3)

3) As highlighted in the video, here are some key phrases White uses to describe the “Christian” view of the environment: (Watch the video)

  • …spoke for the Christian tradition when he said, “when you’ve seen one redwood tree, you’ve seen them all.”
  • To a Christian a tree can be no more than a physical fact.
  • The whole concept of the sacred grove is alien to Christianity
  • Christian missionaries chop down sacred groves…because they assume spirit in nature.

Q1) Respond to White’s claims. Does he get Christianity right? Why or why not? Include specific biblical or theological material from this video, the video lectures, the Moo readings, or your own study.

What are the main ethical dilemmas discussed? What is Socrates trying to say?

2 p. min. double space. You are not obliged to use any outside literature. Simply write what the reading material is about. What’s going on there? Who is (if anyone) involved? What do you think the author is trying to say? Do you agree with him/her if yes/no why? What did/didn’t you like about it and why? You should make references to pages of the given book only. No need to mention the author or the title. Simply p. # in the text.

Plato’s “Euthyphro”.

What is the book about? Who are the main characters?

What are the main ethical dilemmas discussed? What is Socrates trying to say? What did you personally learn, if anything, from the book? Why do you think this book can be relevant today?

write a four-page paper that illustrates your understanding of diverse cultural perspectives.

After selecting and experiencing a cultural event, you will write a four-page paper that illustrates your understanding of diverse cultural perspectives. You are strongly encouraged to attend a cultural event in person, but if you are unable to do so, you may experience an event through available forms of media, such as a learning-based television program or Internet video. (It is required that you see and hear the event, so do not simply read an article about it!)Cultural events include traditions or celebrations. We find these in forms of festivals (culturally-specific games, dance, music, food), performance, religious ceremonies, or rites of passage – all rooted in cultural history. Therefore, the primary cultural event you choose must revolve around a cultural tradition or celebration that is currently practiced AND encompasses historical significance for that culture in the country of origin.Choose ONE primary tradition or celebration in its own setting (country of origin) representing a culture different from your own country of origin that you experience (either in person or online). After experiencing it and learning more about it, identify and compare TWO secondary cultural traditions serving a similar purpose in other cultures, only ONE of the secondary traditions may be from your own country of origin. To reiterate, you will have one primary cultural event and two comparison/contrast events, all three from different places around the world.Overall, remember to watch, listen, observe, learn, compare, contrast, and research! Use 1st person in your paper, describe what you experience. Expand on what you experience and what you learn. Here are some questions to keep in mind:

Questions for primary cultural event:

What is the cultural event you experienced? Did you attend in person or watch it online?
What did you hear and see? What stood out to you while experiencing this event?
What was your initial impression of the culture when you experienced this event?
What did you learn about the event through research? Consider current practices and historical relevance.
Has there been outside influence on the cultural event?
Is the event being practiced the same now as it has been historically? Elaborate and exemplify.
Questions for secondary cultural events:

Be sure you have chosen two cultural events that serve a similar purpose to your primary cultural event in other parts of the world. (If your primary event is a festival of cultural history, your two secondary events should be festivals of cultural history as well. For example, you do not want to look for Viking Festivals in two additional places around the world. You want to look for festivals celebrating cultural identity in two other places in the world.)

What two other cultural events did you choose?
What is their country of origin? (Remember, one can be from your own country of origin, but the other must be from another part of the world.)
What purpose do two cultural events serve, and why is this similar to your primary cultural event?
How are they similar or different from your primary cultural event? (Consider food, music, dancing, singing, decorations, or dress.)
Wrap-up Questions:

Did you find any evidence of cultural influence, inspiration, or sharing across your chosen cultures?
What do your chosen cultures have in common? (Think about basic beliefs and behaviors of the people.)
Why do you think cultures around the world practice similar events and share common beliefs, and what does this say about human beings and culture, based on what you have learned this term?
Remember, this is a paper not a Q&A assignment, so do not list the questions in your paper. Write well-developed paragraphs and use appropriate transitions. Follow APA format and include APA documented research.APA format and documentation required. (Note: An abstract is not required for this paper.)
Paper should be at least 4 pages in length (not including the title and reference page).
At least 3 resources are required.

Give a BRIEF (1 paragraph) description of the main points outlined in the piece.

Essay 1, Media analysis. Students should select one article about religion that derives from popular media (newspaper, magazine, online newspaper, reliable TV news source). The information must be topical to *the past 12 months* from the date of the assignment. Once the story has been read/reviewed, please do the following:

1) Give a BRIEF (1 paragraph) description of the main points outlined in the piece.

2) Analyze the work: Is there a bias presented? If so, what is it? Is it pro- or anti- religion? Why did you select that choice? (Support your choice with examples).

3) Research the information presented. Does your research match what was described by the news article? [Hint: Your textbook is one source of research for this project!]

4) Analysis: What did you learn from this project about media portrayal of religions? What insights did you gain?

5) Be sure to include a works cited. There should be a minimum of three sources including the article and your text. This should be 2 – 3 pages in length (a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 700, not including the works cited page).

Pick an unreached people group described on JoshuaProject.net, and tell about the culture and the needs there for Christian missions

Part 1 of final paper: An Unreached People group

Prompt: Pick an unreached people group described on JoshuaProject.net, and tell about the culture and the needs there for Christian missions
Requirements: 500 words. Describe the location, culture, and % reached in that culture. Tell what Christian work (if any) is being done there.

How does this Old Testament narrative reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ?

Instructions:

For this assignment, you will be studying the Old Testament story of The Bronze Serpent found in Numbers 21:4-9. You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study.

  1. Observation
  2. I have read Numbers 21:4-9 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or

CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. You will find a copy of the NASB, ESV, CSB, and NLT in your myWSB Library.

X Yes

  • No
  1. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount.

Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying

  1. Main characters: (List them)
  2. Plot: (50-100 words)
  3. Narrative structure: (50-100 words)

Hint: Be sure to consult the section on narrative/story structure given in the tutorial for this assignment.

  1. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation.
  2. Who:
  3. What
  4. Where:
  5. When:
  6. Why:
  7. How:
  8. Interpretation
  9. Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you

think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember, the Old Testament narratives frequently communicate truth by showing it to us in story form instead of telling it to us by way of teaching or sermon. Please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us, and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is application or how we will respond to God’s Word.

  1. Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. You should be able

to express this principle in 1-3 sentences.

III. Correlation

  1. How does this Old Testament narrative fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what

type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.

  1. How does your principle fit with the rest of the Scripture? This principle is the one you have

written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If your principle is a true Biblical principle it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this Old Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.

  1. How does this Old Testament narrative reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State

and explain at least one way that the principle of this narrative can be identified in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.

  1. Application

That points of application can be made using the Four Questions for Application? State and explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of these points should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.

  1. The question of duty
  2. The question of character
