How have social movements harnessed the power of political activism to effect change in racial bias, such as Islamophobia? What impact does this have on racial and ethnic minorities serving in the military?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 8 and 10 of the course text as well as the following resources:

Islamophobia Is Driving More US Muslims to Become Politically Engaged, Suggests Report (Links to an external site.)
Muslims in the Military: The Few, the Proud, the Welcome (Links to an external site.)
Assaults Against Muslims in U.S. Surpass 2001 Level (Links to an external site.)
The video Faith on the Frontline (Links to an external site.) might also be useful for additional insight into the issues addressed in this discussion.

Islamophobia refers to the dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, prejudice and discrimination against Muslims (and those people perceived to be Muslims) spiked, including violent attacks. Recently, assaults against Muslims have been spiking, surpassing post-2001 levels. At the same time, many people serving in the US Armed Forces identify as Muslim, and this has created some opportunities as well as some tensions as troops are deployed overseas in several Muslim-majority countries. After reviewing the required resources, please address the following:

How have attacks against Muslims changed since 2001? What factors have led to these changes? Describe an example of Islamophobia in US society.
What challenges do Muslim soldiers face serving in the US military? How has the US military accommodated and supported Muslim soldiers and their religious traditions?
Describe some of the benefits of having Muslim Americans willing to serve in the US military.
How has the increasing prevalence of Islamophobia in society influenced the political engagement of Muslim Americans? What are the potential implications of this on the political system?
How have social movements harnessed the power of political activism to effect change in racial bias, such as Islamophobia? What impact does this have on racial and ethnic minorities serving in the military?

List three specific ways in which Jesus as portrayed in Luke is similar to other people who were thought to be divine.

Your first task for this position paper is to read: David Cartlidge and David Dungan, Documents for the Study of the Gospels, 2nd ed. (Minneapolis: Fortress, 1994).

These passages are all drawn from ancient sources that relate the words, deeds, and experiences attributed to persons who were thought to be divine by some people living in the Greco-Roman world.

Now read the Gospel according to Luke, chaps. 1-2; 4-5; 7-8; 21-24. (available anywhere online or can be uploaded, if necessary)

For your paper, you are to:

Are there ways in which Jesus appears to be different from other divine men? How do you explain these similarities and differences?

How is either Buddhism or Jainism negatively and/or positively implicated in this ecological problem?

Write a 5-6 page essay in which you write about ALL the following questions. First, what do you consider the most important ecological problem which the world faces? Think, for instance, of climate change, pollution, lack of fresh water or other important resources, species extinction. Briefly discuss how both the human and the more-than-human world will be impacted by this problem. Also consider the following questions: who or what will be impacted most; who or what is most directly causing the problem; are the negative and/or positive impacts distributed fairly; how do you think this problems will affect you personally, i.e., what world will you and your relations live in and how will you be affected by this problem practically, but also emotionally or spiritually?

Second, consider Christianity. In what ways is Christianity positively and/or negatively implicated in this ecological problem? You are asked to consider in what ways Christianity impacts human relations with the more-than-human world? Consider the critiques of Lynn White regarding Christianity as described by David Kinsley? You do not have to agree with White, but have to assess his arguments carefully. Moreover, in what ways can Christianity help inspire people to live sustainably within the more-than-human world? With regard to this question you are asked to carefully consider Pope Francis’ Laudato Si.

Third, consider either Buddhism or Jainism. How is either Buddhism or Jainism negatively and/or positively implicated in this ecological problem? Does either of these religions offer some form of inspiration to you as you consider how you are personally involved in this ecological problem.

You need to reflect on these questions using the material presented in the course, and are encouraged to include two additional sources. Please cite all the sources that you use in Chicago style.

Compare the Christian concept of salvation in contrast to any other worldview perspective.

In this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of the Christian worldview, including the main topics you have covered up to this point.
